IMPROVEMENT IN TYPE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l39,640, dated J une 3, 1873; application filed April 3, 1873.
To all whom 'at may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN R. WHITNEY, of Magog, in the province of Quebec, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
The nature of my invention consists in the manufacture of type from glass, to be used principally in lieu of the type now generally made of Wood, for posters, &c.
'Io enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the l B, of wood or other material, and there rigidly secured by a cement. The best flint glass should be used in constructing the` type, and the outer or inner Walls thereof should be of such width apart that it cannot be easily broken in printingl or handlingto and from rthe case. The Walls of the type may be either perpendicular or slanting, and the operator should use care in taking the same out of and putting them back into the case, to prevent breaking of the same.
The glass type may be either cut'or molded, or otherwise formed, as may be desired; and will be more durable than those now used. As they will not wear it will be cheaper to use them than the wood or composition type now used. Though the glass type are principally intended to be used in place of the wood type used for posters, they may equally as Well be made of any size desired, and used in the same manner and for the same purpose as any of the type now commonly employed.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A type for printing, made of glass, as herein set forth.
