JoHANrcnN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and use-- ful Improvements in Clear-Signal-Printing Mechanism for Listing-Machines and the like, of which the following isaspecification, and which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
The invention relates to listing machines, and has as an object the provision of means for printing a clear signal with the first item, Without such clear signal being printed with a total or a. sub-total although the accumulator will be clear in each of the three cases mentioned.
This application is a division of my application for patent on improvements in listing machines, Serial No. 210,301.
An illustrative embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an elevation of one side of a filed January l, 1918,
listing machine with many parts omitted as unnecessary to the present disclosure;
Fig. 2 is a detail longitudinal sectional View of the machine showing the printing elements in elevation;
Fig. 3 is a detail side view of the control ling link for the signal printing mechanism, the control shaft and a detail of the frame being shown in section;

The machine is preferably assembled within and upon a sheet metal frammtwo side elements ofwhich are indicated at it? and 48, having an inclined cover plate, as dd, upon which the keyboard is mounted, and transverse frame members one of which is indicated at 41. The keys, as 60. are arranged in rows numbered 1 to 9 in each row. there being as .many rows as desired. In the machine illustrated seven rows are indicated.
The keys may be depressed against the resistance of springs to cooperate with and determine the range of the movements of a series'of rack bars, one for each row of keys and one of which rack 52. These rack bars are adapted to turn a set of accumulator wheels located at the forward end of the frame, the depression of keys in each row thus determining the amount of rotative movement imparted to the accumulator wheels.
There is also provided an operating handle, as 80, for actuating therack bars and other movable parts of the machine, and printing mechanism at the rearward end of the frame arranged to beset by the movements of the rack bars and operated by the handle. The operating handle 80 is secured to the shaft 82 at the opposite side of the machine from that shown in Fig. l, and a motion of oscillation in forward direction is given the shaft 85 by a link connection, not shown, and in the return direction by a master spring.
The recording or so-called printing mechanism may be assembled between and upon a pair of side plates of which the plate 48 is one, secured to the rear end of the corresponding frame plates 40. As shown, the recording mechanism comprises a platen 28, ribbon guide 30, a series of number type bars 31 and a signal printing type bar 32. The number type bars 31, one for each row of keys. are pivotally supported at their lower ends upon separate bell crank levers, as 59, shown as provided with an arcuate rack segment 198 and pivoted upon a shaft extending between the side plates -28. To the other arm of the bell crank is attached a link 54, which is connected to the corresponding rack bar 52, so that the motion of the rack bar gives a corresponding upward movement to the associated type bar 31. The type bar 32 for the clear signal, having but one type face thereon, is mounted on a fixed pivot 208, which may be applied to the adjacent side plate To rectify the type bars 31 in their alinemerit, av rectifying bar 195 is shown, w..ich forms the transverse member of a bailshaped frame having side members, as 193, pivoted on a shaft 194 passing through the frame. This rectifying bar is moved toward the racks 198 just prior to each printing operation, and engages between the teeth of the racks.
To cause the type to coact with the platen bars is indicated at with a hammer blow, the type bars 31 are pressed thereageinst by levers 187, overcomleg the resistance of light springs 210 reacting between the lower ends of the type hers and the corresponding bell crank levers Bar 32 may be normally held away from the platen by a spring 209 coiled about the pivot 288 and hearing on the frame. The action or levers 187 is caused by hammers 180, pivoted on a shaft 1.81, and each having a 11in, 18$ projecting from its side for com engagement with the corresponding lever. The hammers 180 are in turn actusted by springs 185, each secured to a projest-mg portion of one of the hammers and to s frame member 188.
The hammers 180 are normally held in position substantially parallel with type bars 31, 32, with levers 187 and the type oars retracted and with springs185 extended. For this pnrpose trip fingers 190, 191, are provided for engagement with notches in the lower ends or the hammers. The trip fingers 190, 121 are arranged in a row and are pivoeally mounted on a shaft 192 carried by the rectifying frame member 193. Normally the trip fingers 190, 191, are held against the front cross bar 195 of the rectifying frame 193, as by springs 196 anchored to a cross bar 197, forming part of the rectifying frame. When the rectifying frame swings forwardly the trip lingers will move with it, each keeping its upper end in the notch of the corresponding hammer unless prevented from doing so as will he explained. After movement, the hammers 180 are restored by means of a restoring rod 18-1. carried by crank arms 183.
The accumulator is preferably assembled on a bracket 26, which may have the form of an inverted bail and may extend across the main rams of the machine atone enddicing secured thereto by screws, as 46. A hell crank shaped member 116 may he pivoted at each side of the member 26, as at 117, and these members 116 may carry a shaft 115 upon which a frame comprising ond members 111 is carried. *l'lnd members 114 are shown as having a slot, as 113, within which the shaft 112, hearing the accumulator wheels 51, is guided for vertical movement.
Movement of link 122 to the right will depress the accumulator wheels against the resistance of spring 118.
As is well understood in devices of the present type, the normal adding, operation is accomplished by depression of the accumulator wheels: into mesh with the advanced rack bars at the end of their forward stroke, and keeping them in mesh durin; the return of the rack bars. two links 128, 129, are provided 01 communicating motion from these studs to the plate 120. The link 1225 is reflective for turning the plate 120 in both directions during the normal oeeration of the machine. 011 the other hand, the link 1229 is efiective for turning the plate 120 in both directions during the taking of a total. in taking a sub-total, the link 129 is effective to turn the plate 120 in one direction, and the link 128 is effective to turn the plate 120 in the opposite direction. The links 128 and 129 are pivotally con-- nected with the plate 120 at opposite sides of its center, as at 131 and 132. As shown, the link 1128 is formed with a hooked end machine, the hooked end 133 of the link 128 is engaged upon one side by the stud126 as the control shaft approaches the limit of its return movement. formed with oppositely facing shoulders 13% and 135. When this link is effective the shoulder 131 is engaged-by the stud 127 at the beginning of the forward movement of the control shaft 85. This method of supporting the link 129 permits of the lifting of the link for the engagement of the stud 125 with the shoulder by the cam engagement of the stud with the rear end of the link. As slur-"n, the bracket 13'? is formed with a vertical slot 141, and is slidingly held against the side plate 40 by a stud 142. which runs in this slot. A spring 140 serves for elevating the bracket 137 and total key 139. To prevent movement of the-total key 139, except when the machine is at rest or the control shaft 85 has reached the limit of its forward movement, the flange of the disk 124 extends into the path of an outstanding aim 1,43 carried by the bracket 137, but the said flange has notches 14A and which respectively register with the arm 143 when the machine is at rest and when the control shaft 85 has'completed its forward movement.
The printing of a-signal With the first item is desired, as usual, the invention contemplating that this shall be accomplished by permitting the actuation of the type bar 31 with the corresponding printing hammer only when the accumulator 25 is clear. For this purpose each of the indicator wheels 51 of the accumulator is formed with a notch 214 (Fig. 2). comb 215 extends under the indicator wheels 551 and the notches 214 of all of the indicator wheels register with the teeth of the comb 215 only when. the accumulator 25 is clear. lVhen this condition exists the comb 215 may be raised to enter its teeth in the notches 21 1. At other times the raising of the comb 215 is limited by the engagement of one or more of its teeth with the rims oi the corresponding indicator wheels. Furthermore. as the accumulator 25 is clear when a total or sub total is being printed, provision is desirably also made to prevent the raising of the comb 215 at this time, viz :when the accumulator frame 114 has been lowercd during the out ward movement of the rack bars As shown. the comb 215 is carried between a pair of c ank arms. as 216 (Fig. 2), one at each end of the comb. These crank arms arc fixed upon a rock shalt 2-17. and this rock shaft extends betwecn and is journaled at its opposite ends in the two ends of the accumulator frame 114. The rocl; shaft 217 accordingly rises and ialls with the accumulator frame ill. Movement of the comb 215 is contiucd to a vertical plane by providing it at each end with a slotted arm 218, which cngagcs the spindle 112 upon which the indicator wheels 51 are mounted.
