Description

r as shown extends CHARLES A. BEGKWITH, OF SHULLS BURG, WISCONSIN.
FENCE-STAPLE.
Application filed October 29, 1920.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. BECK- WITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Shullsburg, in the county of Lafayette and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful F ence-Staple, of which the following is a specificatio This invention has reference to fence construction, and more particularly to fence constructions in which metallic posts are employed for supporting the wire material employed as the body of the fence.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of means for locking the wire to the fence post to insure against the wire becoming displaced therefrom.
A further object ofthe invention is to provide removable links forming the securing means for securing the wire to the post, the securing links being held to the post by their frictional contact therewith- With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawing Figure 1 illustrates a rear elevational View of a metallic fence post constructed in ac cordance with the present invention and showing the securing means as applied thereto.
Fig. 2 illustrates a side elevational view of the same; and
Fig. 3 illustrates a sectional view taken on line 38 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the reference character 5 designates the body portion of a post, the same being formed of suitable metal and provided with a rear-- wardly extending flange 6 which is. of a length equal to the length of the post, and at right angles to the body portion 5.
Formed in the body portion 5 and in spaced relation with each other, are a plurality of openings 7, the openings 7 being arranged to aline with the horizontal wires 8 forming the body of the fence, for purposes to be hereinafter more fully described. The securing links 9 which form an important feature of the present invention, in
Specification of Letters Patent.
.tively large openings Patented Nov. 1, 1921. Serial No. 420,516.
elude lengths of wire, each of which has one end turned inwardly to provide a hook member 10, the opposite endthereof being turned inwardly at right angles to the hook 10, as at 11, the length of the respective hook members being such as will permit the hook member 10 to be positioned over the flange 6, the opposite hook member 11 passing through an opening 7 of the body portion 5.
When the links have been positioned on the post associated therewith, the hook members 11 thereof fall opposite the wires 8, so that when pressure is brought to bear on the link members, a depression 12 is made therein, with the result that the link members are shortened and bring the hook members 11 thereof into gripping relation with the wires 8 to insure against displacement of the wires.
If it is desired to remove the wires 8, it is only necessary to bend the offset portion 12 from the position as shown in full lines in Fig. 3 of the drawings to the position as indicated in dotted lines in this figure,
whereupon the hook member 11 is moved out of contact with the wlre 8.
It is to be understood that the offset portions 12 of the link members 9 may be formed by a blow directed thereto, as by means of a hammer or other fence tool.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is In a fence construction, a post including longitudinal flanges, said post having relaformed in one of the flanges, securing links, each of said securing 1 links havmg hooks formed at the ends thereof, being spaced from the post associated therewith, one of said hooks adapted to embrace a portion of one of the flanges, the opposite hook adapted to pass through the opening associated therewith and grip a wire, said link adapted to be bent intermediate its ends to cause the hook members to grip the articles connected therewith, and one of said hook members adapted to be moved within the confines of the opening in which the same is disposed.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
CHAS. A. BEoKwrTH.
