GRANVILLE S. P. HOLLAND, JR., OF NORFOLK, VIRGINIA.
TESTING DEVIC FOR SPARK-PLUGS.
T 0 all 10 Item. it may concern:
Be it knownthat I. GRANVILLE S. P. HoL- LAND, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Norfolk, in the county of Norfolk and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Testing Devices for Spark-Plugs, of which the following is a specification. 4
y invention relates to devices for short circuiting the spark. plugs of internal combustion engines, for the purpose of testing the action of the plug or'plugs which remain in operation.
The particular object of the invention is to provide a short circuiting device which is of simple, cheap and durable construction, and which may be very easily and quickly placed on the spark plugs and removed, in the testing operation.
The accompanying drawing shows one modification of the invention. After considering this in connection with the accompanying description, persons skilled in the art will understand that variations may be made without departing from the principles of the invention, and I do not limit myself to details, except as claimed.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device applied to a spark plug in position on an engine cylinder.
Fig. 2 is a top plan of the device removed from the plug, and
Fig. 3 is a vertical section.
The invention in the preferred form comprises a metallic conductor or contact member 1, and a clip 2, a handle 3, and means such as a screw 4, for securing the handle to the conductor and clio.
Usually, as shown, the conductor and clip are formed of a single piece of sheet metal of moderate thickness. This may be any suitable metal oralloy, but may preferably be of spring sheet steel. The conductor or connector 1, usually has its upper part 5 relatively short and curved-away from the handle at a point near its end 6, and provided with a recess or cavity 7. The lower part 8 of the conductor is usually relatively longer and this part is usually slightly curved in a direction away from the handle as shown.
The clip 2 comprises two arms, 9 and 10, extending from the conductor 1. Each of these arms has a curved portion 11, forming, together, a space 12 adapted to receive the insulator or porcelain of the spark plug, and

against the metal terminal T and holds the lower connector against the nut N, wh' stitutes the metallic terminal members at the top of the plug.
t is obvious, without further description, how the testing device may be quickly placed on a plug to short circuit it, and quickl removed and placed on another plug. vidently by providing a plurality of the short circuiting devices, say three for a four cylinder engine, any one or more of the plugs may be short test the action plugs and by shifting the devices from one plug to another, ing improperly may be quickly detected.
aving thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. A short circuiting device -for spark plugs, metallic conductor adapted 7 upper terminal and the body of a spark plug, a spring clip located intermediate the ends of the conductor and adapted to embrace the insulating portion of the plug, between the terminal and the body, and a handle of insulating material.
2. A short circuiting device for spark plugs, comprising a relatively long conductor having its upper end adapted to eng the terminal of a spark plug and its lower end adapted to engage the body of the plug,
regardless distance between said terminal and body, a spring clip consisting of two arms extending from the conductor and adapted to embrace the porcelain of the spark plug, regardless of considerable variationin the diameter of the porcelain, and a handle of insulating material joined to the conductor.
3. A short circuiting device for spark plugs, comprising a metallic body of spring sheet metal including a relatively long conductor having a curved and recessed upper end, adapted to engage the terminal of a spark plug, and a lower end adapted to engage the body of the plug, regardless of considerable variation in the distance be of considerable variation in the tween the terminal and the body, and also including a spring clip consisting of two arms extending from the sides of the con ductor and bent inwardly and then outwardly providing flaring ends, and adapted to embrace the porcelain of a spark plug, a handle of insulating material and a screw connecting the handle to the metallic body of the device at a point near the intersection of the conductor and the clip.
In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
