Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 1, 1921.
Application filed October 14, 1918. Serial No. 258,070.
(GRANTED UNDER THE PROVISIONS OF THE ACT OF MARCH 3, 1921, 41 STAT. L, 1313.)
T 0 all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, ROBERT CHARLES GREEN, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, a resident of /Vinchester, England, and whose post-olfice address is Vulcan Iron Works, Winchester, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hydraulic Rams for Raising l/Vater, (for which I havefiled an application in Great Britain Oct. 11, 1917, Patent 119,701, sealed J an. 22, 1919,) of which the following is a specification.
This invention for improvements in hydraulic rams for raising water has for its obj ect to enable any desired number of pulse or waste valves to be readily fitted to the injection drive or feed pipe so that the capacity of the ram may be increased and the bed of the ram or valve box be constructed in such a manner that shall prevent it from breathing or expanding when subjected to the force of the pulsations of the water and con sists in forming the bed of the ram or valve box with collocated tubular valve-carrying sections or valve bodies adapted to be readily assembled in any required number according to the desired capacity of the ram. Each tubular section has a through way and is capable of being joined at the ends of the through Way to the injection pipe and to another similar tubular section or to a cover plate.
The pulse or waste valves are fitted on the tubular sections and the air chambers or outlet pipes are also fitted on tubular sections similar to the valve carrying sections.
The water enters the air chamber or vessel through a suitable delivery valve lined inside the same.
This form of ram is specially suited for irrigation work or for any situation where it is desired to elevate a large body of water.
In the accompanying sheet of illustrative drawings- Figures 1 and 2 are side elevation and plan respectively of a hydraulic ram constructed according to this invention.
Fig. 3 is a transverse section showing the connection between the air chamber and valve bed and Fig. 1 is a vertical detail section through one of the waste or pulse valves.
In the form of construction illustrated the bed of the ram or valve box is built up of two series of tubular sections a terminated by curved end sections a and joined to the injection or drive pipe by a bifurcated end section Z) thereon formed with joining flanges c.
As shown the tubular sections a are of cylindrical form being circular in cross section and the cross sectional area of the through ways of the sections a is equal to that of the branches 5 of the bifurcated end section b of the drive pipe. Flanges '0 are provided on the ends of the sections a through which bolts not shown are passed to secure them together, the terminal sections a ram bed or valve box sections a and drive pipe section 6 being also provided with integral base flanges or feet a 6 In assembling the sections a two of them are secured to the branches 6 of the bifurcated end section b of the injection pipe and then as many sections as desired are connected on in sequence, the ends of the two last straight sections a being either connected to terminal curved sections a or closed off by cover plates.
The pulse or waste valves d are fitted to flanged openings 6 on the tops of the sections at, a
These valves are preferably of the duplex type with superposed inclined annular seatings (Z and for each seating al have an annular rubber ring 6 that is adapted to close orifices 61 in the inclined annular seating, through which the waste water passes when the valves are open.
In the form of ram shown a bifurcated pipe 7 flanged at its ends connects two sideby-side sections a with the air chamber or vessel 9 to which the water is admitted by a delivery valve consisting of a fiat perforated metal plate or grid it covered with a rubber disk k and opening against a curved metal guard 72 Any other suitable form of valve may be employed, or for extra large rams air vessels 9 and delivery valves may be fitted to each row of tubular sections and connected together with a common delivery main.
1. In a hydraulic ram, a bed comprising a series of separable tubular sections detachably connected together and arranged end to end, each of said sections, excepting one, being provided with Waste valves, the other section being connected to the air chamber vessel.
2. In a hydraulic ram, a bed comprising two parallel series of tubular sections, said sections bein detachably connected together and arranged end to end, and a drivepipe having branches each connected to one end section of one of the series.
3. A hydraulic ram comprising a series of tubular bed sections arranged and connected 10 together end to end, a drive pipe connected to one end of said series, a closure for the opposite end of said series, and an air cham ber vessel connected to an intermediate section of said series.
In testimony whereof I have aflixed my signature.
ROBERT CHARLES GREEN.
