Be it known that I, ARTHUR J. BAznLnY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, Cuyahoga county, Ohio, have in vented a new and useful Coupling-Operating Mechanism, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is an end elevation of a car showing my coupler operating mechanism applied thereto; and Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof.
My invention relates to coupler operating mechanism and provides a mechanism which permits longitudinal movement of the coupler during buffing and draft, and also lateral movement of the coupler on curves, without interfering with the operation of the mechanism. My invention also consists in the construction and arrangement of parts which I shall hereinafter describe and claim.
Referring to the drawings, the uncoupling lever is made of a single rod having a downwardly extending arm or handle 2 at its outer end, an intermediate portion 3 extending transversely of the car, a downwardly and forwardly extending portion 4 terminating in a horizontal part 5 seated in the eye of the lock lift 6 of the coupler. The extreme inner end 7 of the rod is bent at right angles to the part 5 so as to prevent its removal from the eye of the lock lift 6 with out dismounting the rod.
The rod near its outer end is supported in a bracket 8, which may be bolted to the car end sill as shown. Near the inner end of the rod is a support 9 which comprises a base portion by which it is secured to the end sill, an intermediate lateral and upward extension 10, and a forward projection 11 terminating in an enlargement 12. Slidably mounted on the forward projection 11 is a link 13 of such dimensions that it may be threaded over the enlargement 12. The link 13 terminates in a pair, of oppositely facing, partly closed hooks 14: which support the inner end of the intermediate portion 3 of the rod.
In applying the rod, the link 13 is placed on the support 9, the rod is threaded through the bracket 8, the link 13, and the eye of the lock lift 6, and the brackets 8 and 9 are then secured to the car. It is then impossible to remove the rod or to detach the link 13 from its support 9, or even to drop this link Specification 03 Letters Patent.

back on the portion 10 of the support 9, unless the brackets 8 and 9 are removed.
T he coupler is operated by lifting the handle 2 of the rod, thus causing by the rotation of the rod the lifting of its horizontal portion 5 and with it the lifter 6. As the lock lift 6 rises the link 13 is free to swing on its support 9 and to allow the portion 5 of the rod to follow the lock lift without restraint.
As the coupler moves forwardly or to the rear in draft or buff the link 13 is free to slide on the projection 11, and may also swing laterally to some extent, and when the coupler moves laterally on curves the lock lift slides along the horizontal portion 5 of the rod.
The terms and expressions which I have employed are used as terms of description and not of limitation, and I have no intention, in the use of such terms and expressions, of excluding any mechanical equivalents for the features shown and described, but recognize that various modifications may be made within the scope of the invention claimed.
What I claim is:
1. In coupler operating mechanism, a rod extending transversely of the car and engaging a lock lifter, supports on the car for the rod, one of said supports being mounted to swing during the lifting of the lock and to move bodily during buff and draft.
2. In coupler operating mechanism, a rod extending transversely of the car and engaging a lock lifter, a link within which the rod is suspended, and a bracket mounted on the car end sill from which the link is suspended, the link being free to move with said rod and bodily upon said bracket.
3. In coupler mechanism, a one piece rod mounted on an end sill of a car and directly engaging a lock lifter, a bracket removably and a lateral extension from said forward car and a link suspended upon the bracket ortion engaging a lock lifter, and means and havinga sliding movement thereon, said or'preventing the disengagement of the rod link terminating in oppositely facing hooks 10 from said lock lifter. by Which the 'rod is loosely and flexibly sup- 5 5.
