UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CLIMBING-IRON.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 25, 1921.
Application filed December 3, 1920. Serial No. 428,174.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Josnrri SELINGER- BALZER, a citizen of Switzerland, residing at Obersteinma-ur, Switzerland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Climbing-Irons, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a climbing-iron for climbers. laborers mowing grass in the mountain-ridges, and other persons. The new climbing-iron consists essentially of a bow for putting on a foot, and a lever pivotally mounted on a horizontal axle fastened to said bow, the lever having pivotally connected a spur with each of its ends.
The new climbing iron is represented in the accompanying drawings, in which Fig ure 1 shows the climbing-iron partly in front-view and partly in section, Fig. 2 is an upper view of the same, partly in section, and Fig. 3 is a side-view.
a is the central part of a bow serving as foot-rest and being provided with walls a. In the latter is fastened an axle f forming a pivot for the lever 9. Each of the ends of the latter possesses a trunnion v} with which a double-pointed spur h is connected. Each spur has a stud 70 by means of which the said spurs are guided in grooves m of the arms /L. To each arm 6 is fastened a Hat spring n pressing against the spur for secur ing the latter in its position. Fig. 1 shows that the part a serving as a footrest has always a horizontal position or nearly so, even if the soil is strongly inclined. Hereby the user of the climbing iron is allowed to stand securely.
I claim as my invention:
A climbing-iron comprising a bowed member having grooves at each end and adapted to serve as a foot-rest, a lever having a horizontal axis centrally of its ends mounted on said bowed member, and a pivotally mounted spur at each end of the lever and arranged to be guided in the grooves of said bowed member.
In testimony whereof I have afiixed my signature in )resence of two witnesses.
