Beit known that I, ARTHUR F. NELSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rogers Park, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Applying faste to Labels, of which the follow-' in isa specification.

Generally speaking labels are of two kinds, to-wit; those to which the paste is applied at the time the labels are used or applied to the goods, and those to which the paste isapplied, left to dry and is moistened again at the time the labels are used, the latter being commonly My invention primarily is intended for applying paste to labels as they are used although I do not intend to limit it to that use as it will be obvious that 'it is equally useful in applying paste to the other class of labels.
The method commonly employed is to apply the-paste a the labels by means of a brush. This method is wasteful of the paste as considerable more paste is applied to the label than need be to make it adhere to the goods. It is not applied uniformly to the label. For these reasons in applying labels to bolts of cloth, for-example, it often hap pens that so much paste will be daubed on the label as to cause the paste to draw the color and spoil that portion of the cloth and because the label is placed back a Ways from the end of the strip of cloth, it is necessary to cut off a considerable portion'of the strip. Furthermore the operation of applying the paste to the label with a brush is tedious, only one label being covered at a time; messy, the paste being daubed over the edges of the label; and insanitary, the paste container being usually uncovered and the excess amount of paste being worked out of the brush each time against the edge of the container. i
The primary object of my invention is to provide a sanltary device of improved and which the labels may be fed and which will apply the paste to the labels uniformly and in ust suflicient quantity to caues the labels to adhere to the goods. p
In its preferred form my invention contemplates a rotatable shaft mounted in the cover member of the receptacle containing the paste on which a plurality of spaced disks are mounted and arranged so that the peripheries of the disks will pass through the body of the paste when the shaft is rotated. The labels are passed through the device over these disks, and a further obiect of my nvention is to provide in association with said shaft and disks and also preferably mounted in the cover member means for pressingthe labels into engagement with the peripheries of these disks as they are fed through the device. This arrangement makes it possible to remove the operating mechanism with the cover as a unit. Since the shaft carrying the paste applying disks is mounted in the cover member, the disks maybe easily and very quickly cleaned by holding'the cover member over a basin of hot water, for example, so that the periphcries of the disks project thereinto,the shaft at the same time may be rotated.
A further object of the invention-is to mount the shaft carrying the paste applymay be removed independent of the other shaft and its disks. I
The invention consists of the novel constructions, arrangements and devices to be hereinafter described and claimed for carrying out the above stated objects and such other incidental objects as will ap ear from the following description of a pre erred embodiment of the invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein igure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a deyice embodying the principles of my invention.

provided with a plurality of depending lugs 14 which engage the base member and prevent-it from shifting laterally on the base member. The base and cover members are preferably cast from any suitable metal.
,A longitudinal shaft 15 is journaled in the cover member, this shaft preferably being formed of a piece of heavy Wire bent to the shape shown in Fig. 1 to provide a crank and handle portion 16. A collar 17 is rigidly secured to the right hand end of the shaft. A gear 18 is secured to the inner or opposite end of the shaft preferably having threaded engagement therewith. A plurality of paste carrying disks 19 are mounted on the shaft, being spaced by suitable bushings 20, the disks and bushings being clamped between the collar 17 and the hub of the gear 18. A spring 21 is interposed between the collar 17 and the adjacent end wall of the cover member. The inner end of the shaft beyond the gear 18 is slightly reduced in diameter and projects into an opening or bearing 22 formed in the cover member. Theopposite end of the shaft projects through an opening or bearing 23 formed in the opposite end of the cover member. The bearing 23 is somewhat larger than the shaft 15 so as to permit the shaft to be tilted when positioning it in, or removing it from, the cover member. The spring 21 prevents the inner end of the shaft from working out of the bearing 22. It will be noted that the-disks 19, bushings 20 and gear 18 may be-mounted on the shaft before it is positioned in the cover member. The spring 21 'isslipped over the handle portion of the shaft and in positioning the shaft. in the cover member, the handle portion is slipped through the bearing 23 by tilting the shaft first to one side and then the other, the operation being completed by compressing the spring 21 sufiiciently to perit the inner end of the shaft to he slipped into the bearing 22.
Inorder to press the labels into engagement with the peripheries of the paste ap plying disks, as they are fed through the device, I preferably provide a counter-shaft 24 which has secured to it at one end a collar 25 and at the opposite end a gear 26 which meshes with the gear 18. A plurality of pressure applying disks 27 are mounted on the shaft 24 being spaced apart by suitable bushings 28, these disks and bushings being clamped iJZlZTi'BEH the collar 25 and the hub of theg 26. The inner end of this shaft beyond hub of the gear slightly reduced in diameter and projects into an opening or bearing 29 formed in the cover member. The opposite end of the shaft projects into an opening or hearing 30 formed in the opposite end of the cover member. A spring 31 is interposed between the collar25 and the adjacent end of the cover member. The bearing 30 is somewhat larger than the shaft 24 to permit the shaft to be tilted sidewise in positioning it in, or removing it from its bearings. The disks 27 and bushings 28 are mounted on the shaft 24 in the same manner as those on the shaft 15. Y a
The disks 19 and 27 are of such diameters as to cause their peripheries to pass substantially through a common plane when these disks aie mounted in the manner described. The disks 19 and 27 are mounted on their respective shafts so as to be staggered with respect to each other. These disks may be stamped out of any suitable metal. The bushings 20 and 28 are made by sawing off lengths of tubing of any suitable metal.
The cover member on one side is provided with a longitudinal slot 32 through which the labels are inserted or fed 'into the device and on the other side with a longitudinal slot 33 through which the labels pass as they leave the device. As the labels are fed through the device between the disks 19 and 27, the disks 27 press the labels into engagement with theperipheries of the disks 19, the, labels being slightly corrugated as they pass through between the twosets of disks. When the shaft 15 is rotated the disks 19 turn with it, the peripheries of these d-isks passing through the body of paste. A certain amount of the paste will adhere to the peripheries of the disks 19 and be carried thereon and transferred to the labels as they are fed through the device.
I preferably provide means to prevent the labels from adhering to the disks 19 and to insure their passing through the slot 33. For this purpose the fingers 34 may be provided. These fingers may be loosely mounted on the bushings 20, the free ends projecting into the slot 33 as shown in Fig. 2. Anypaste which adheres to the fingers 34 and flows downthe outside'of the cover member may pass back into the paste receptacle through a longitudinal slot 35 formed in the cover member;
The device is very simple and effects a large saving of paste as only enough paste is applied to each label to cause it to adhere to the goods or package to Which it is applied. The operating mechanism being mounted in the cover member is removed with the cover as a unit. The base is then easily cleaned and refilled. into and the crank given a few turns. This operation usually results in freeing the disks of all paste. However, if paste still adheres .to these disks, they may be removed with their associated shaft as a unit and without dismantling any other mechanism. After being removed they may be placed in water and the accummulated paste soaked oil". This construction is inexpensive and facilitates assembling the parts. The slots '32, 33 and 35 admit very little light so that it is relativelydark Within the device. Flies and other insects therefore, are not attracted within the device.
The term paste as used in the specification and the appended claims is used in its broad sense and intended to include any glue or adhesive material which might be used in applying labels to packages or the like.
I do not intend to limit the invention to the details of construction shown and described, except only in so far as certain of the appended claims are specifically so limited, as it willbe obvious that various modifications may be made without departingfrom the principles of the invention.
I claim:
1. A device for applying paste to labels comprising a receptacle for the paste, a cover member for said receptacle, a revoluble paste carrying member mounted in said cover member, and means mounted in said cover member and adapted to press the labels into engagement with said paste carrying member as they are passed through the device. 1
2. A device for applying paste to labels comprising a paste receptacle, a cover member for said receptacle, a shaft rotatably mounted in said cover member, a plurality of paste carrying disks mounted on said shaft, and means mounted in said cover member and adapted to press the labels into engagement with the peripheries of said disks as they are run through the device.
' 3. A device for applyin paste to labels 7 comprising a receptacle for the paste, a
cover member for the receptacle, a shaft journaled in said cover member, a plurality of paste carrying members mounted on said shaft, a counter-shaft journaled in said cover member and operatively connected to said first mentioned shaft, and means mounted on said counter shaft adapted to press the labels into engagement with said paste carrying members.
4. A device for applying paste to labels comprising a receptacle for the paste, a cover member for the receptacle, a shaft journaled in said cover member, a plurality of paste carrying members mounted on said shaft, a counter-shaft journaled in said cover member and operatively connected to thatthe paste carrying disks project there comprising a receptacle for the paste, a
cover member for the receptacle, a shaft journaled to said cover member, a plurality of paste carrying disks mounted on said shaft, a counter-shaft journaled in said cover member and operatively connected .to said first mentioned shaft, means'mounted on said counter-shaft adapted to press the labels into engagement with said paste carrying disks, said cover member having inlet and outlet slots through which the labels pass, a finger mounted on said first mentioned shaft and projecting through said outlet slot, whereby the labels are pre- .vented from adhering to the paste carrying disks and slot.
6. A device for applying pastecto labels comprising a receptacle for the paste, a cover member for the receptacle, a, shaft journaled in said cover member, a collar fixed to one end of said shaft, a gear fixed to the other end of said shaft, a set of paste carrying disks mounted on said shaft, bushings on said shaft adapted to space the disks, a counter-shaft journaled in said cover memher, a collar on one end of said counter-shaft, a gear on the other end of said countershaft and meshing with said first mentioned gear, a set of pressure applying disks mounted on said counter-shaft, and bushings on said counter-shaft adapted to space the pressure applying disks, said disks and bushings being clamped on the respective shafts between the respective collars and gears. 7. 9. In a device for applying paste to labels comprising a receptacle for the paste, a
shaft, revoluble paste applying means mounted on said shaft to dlp into said receptacle, pressure means adapted to press the labels intoengagement with said paste applying means, and means for mounting said shaft which permits the removal of the shaft and paste applying means as aunit without disturbing the paste applying means.

In a device for applying paste to lables, including a supporting member, a main shaft, a plurality of spaced paste applying disks mounted on said shaft, a counter shaft, a plurality of spaced pressure applying disks mounted on said counter shaft and staggered with respect to the paste applying disks, hearings in said member for said countershaft, bearings in said member for said main shaft, means whereby said bearings permit said main shaft to be shifted longitudinally to free said main shaft from one bearing and then to be tilted and withdrawn from the other bearing whereby said main shaft and the paste applying disksmay be removed as a unit and independent of said countershaft and pressure applying disks, and means for rotating said shafts.
12.111 a device for applying paste to labels, including a supporting member, the combination of 'a shaft, paste applying means mounted on said shaft, bearings formed in said supporting member and adapted to receive the respective ends of said shaft, pressure means adapted to press the labels into engagement with said paste applying means, one of the bearings for said shaft being large enough to permit said shaft to be positioned obliquely therein,'a stop adapted to limit longitudinal movement of said shaft outwardly with respect to the smaller bearing, and a spring tending to retain the shaft in the smaller bearing whereby said shaft and said paste applying means may be removed as a unit by shifting the shaft longitudinally to disengage it from the smaller bearing, then tilting it. obliquely and withdrawing it from the other bearing.
