1,394,909, Specification of Letters Patent. Pat t d O 2 1921 Application filed January 26, 1920. Serial No. 354 049.
T zl i itmaywmem; Fig. 1 showing the device in ts I 5 e it known that I, ERNEST NORBERT KEN- tion; and Fig. 4 is a plan View 5; T122 3 5 NEDY, a'subject of the King of Great Britain w d r m below.
and Ireland res ding at Birchwood Sunslmlla-l Of reference relate to I ningdale, in the county of Berks, England, lee-14351n an the figures hf the I I ave invented a new and useful Razor-Blade I daring to the mWi l a is th h d1 6 older, of which the following is a specifihmged t0 the holder p i 5 ate c-anAg cation. shown, I prefer to form the handle a of two M i ti l t t a d i f flat strips of metal d and e riveted together a. 1 s f t razor blades to be used f at the r ends in such a manner as to leave a rious other purposes besides shaving, and has Space 111 between accommodate e blade f or t b t to -jd a holder fors'uch when the holder is in the closed position.
the manner of an ordinary penknife, which 76 formed in the j n 11 m d t any di f t razor The holder is also preferably formed of 7 l d t present on h market and will two thin strips of sheet metal which are so ployed either as an ordinary knife or for shaped Slot 5 in which 311 ordinary Safety special purposes where a comparatively keen razor blade 7 y be clamped y means of edge is required, as for example cuttin he set screw, 7', or as an alternative other corns, trimming nails, peeling potatoes, and known suitable means y be employedven asa cigar tt The bottom edge of the holder 6, is pro- Qth bj t comprise th provision f a vlded with a semi-circular recess or slot is devlc whi h n b d as a h ld f and the handle a with a circular hole m for 80 stropping either single or double edge safety t 16 pu p se her inaf er described. Along razor blades and which in an emergency may h t p edge of the holder 6 the wedge even be used as an di f t razor, it shaped slot z' is closed at one end thereof, as
, wlthout removing it from the holder. a shoulder against which the blade bear? g5 aholder in accordance with the invention in t e set screw j. Owing to this arrangement two parts connected together by a hinged any ype of blade may be used in the holder joint so that the said parts can be opened thou alte ation of the fittings. fully and closed in the same manner as the he various methods of using the device other is provided with a Wedge-shaped slot In the open position it may be used as an adapted to receive an ordinary safety razor ordinary penknife the blade being clamped blade, means being provided for keeping the n the slot and the top edge bearing against lade rigidly in position in the holder. The e h ld rl ig. 3). As shown more parandle isv serrated or provided with teeth ticularly in Fig. 4 the outer surfaces of the along one of its edges in order to provide the holder 6 are flat and free from any pro'ecusual guard when the device is used for tions which might cause inconvenience w on shaving purposes. t e devlce is thus used. The invention further comprises other desed as a safety corn-p-arer or cutter, for tails of construction which will be hereinexample, the screw j is adjusted so as to reafter described with reference to the accomlease the pressure on the blade f and the view in elevation showing the device in its the edge of the holder 6. The corn should 106 closed position; Fig. 2 is a detail view to a be cut by the portion of the blade f left exlarger scale showing the wedge-shaped slot posed by the semi-circular slot is on the edge in the holder; F ig. 3 is a similar view to of the holder. This effectively acts as a end is placed in the circular besides shaving,
safety device as a deep cut is thereby avoided and it is hardly possible to do otherwise than to shave or pare the corn.
When used as a cigar cutter and the cigar hole m in the handle a and the device held in the open position in the right hand with the thumb under the handle a and-the first finger at the top of the holder 6, the finger and thumb are then pressed together thus cutting 0 the end of the cigar.
For cutting out patterns, cutting furs, paper and the like the device is preferably used in the closed position an additional set screw 9 being employed to more firmly hold the blade f which may be adjusted either to protrude through the handle at along its whole length or so that one corner only is used as a cutting point the cheeks 8 forming a bearing surface facilitating the production of a straight out.
For stropping the ordinary double edge safety razor blades, the blades must be inserted so that the edges protrude equally each side of the holder.
Various other means of using the device for employing safety razor blades may be readily devised besides those described. The device is flat and may be carried in the waistcoat pocket. It is always in good condition as a fresh blade may be inserted easily and quickly. Moreover, it can be' opened with one hand without using'the finger nails for this purpose as is the case with an ordinary penknife, and it provides means .of utilizing safety razor blades which may possibly be otherwise thrown away or discarded as waste.
I claim 1. A device for enabling safety razor blades to be used for various other purposes besides shaving, comprising in combination, a handle portion formed of two fiat strips of material connected together at their ends so as to leave a space between them, a blade holder connected to one end of said handle portion and formed of two fiat strips of metal arranged side by side and connected together at their ends so as to form a Wedge shaped slot between them, a safety razor blade in said slot, and means for clamping the sides of the blade holder to grip said blade in any adjusted position;
therein.
2. A device for enabling safety razor iblades to be used for various other purposes comprising in combination, a handle portion formed of two flat strips of material connected together at their ends so as to leave a space between them, comblike teeth formed along one edge of one of said strips, a cut away portion along the edge of the other strip registered with said comb-like teeth, a blade holder connected to one end of said handle portion and formed of two fiat metal strips arranged side by side and connected together at their ends so as to leave a wedge shaped slot between them, a safety razor blade freely mounted within said wedge shaped slot, and means for clampfi ing the two sides of said blade holder together to grip said blade in any adjusted position therein.
3. A device for enabling safety razor blades to be used for various other purposes besides shaving, comprising. in combination, a handle portion formed of two flat strips of material connected together at their ends so as to leave a space between them, a blade holder connected to one end of said handle portion by means of a pivot, said blade holder being formed of two strips of metal arranged side by side so as to form a wedge shaped slot between them, said wedge shaped slot being closed at one end, a slot or recess in one edge of each strip constituting the blade holder and located intermediate their ends, a safety razor blade mounted freely in said wedge shaped slot, and means for clamping the strips forming the sides of the blade holder together so as to grip the blade in any adjusted position.
4:. A device for enabling safety razor blades to be used for various other purposes besides shaving, comprising in combination, a handle portion formed of two flat strips of metal connected together at their ends so as to leave a narrow space open on each side, between them, a blade holder formed of two fiat strips of metal connected together at their ends so'as to form a wedge shaped slot said blade holder being connected to one end of said handle portion by a pivot so as to enable the blade holder to be moved with relation to the handle portion in the manner of an ordinary pen knife, a safety razor blade adapted to be inserted in either the wedge shaped slot in the blade holder or in the space between the strips constituting the handle portion. Screw clamping means on said blade holder for drawing the strips constituting the sides thereof together to grip the blade when inserted therein, and screw clamping means on said handle portion adapted to clamp the strips thereof together to grip the blade when inserted in the space therebetween.
