NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ATTACHMENT FOR MOTOR vEl-IlCLEs.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 18, 1921.
Application filed. January 15, 1920. Serial No. 351,667.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IGNATIUS PoULToN PERRYMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Memphis, in the county of Shelby and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in an Attachment for Motor-Vehicles, of which the following isa specification.
This invention has for its object to provide an attachment for motor vehicles possessing such characteristic features of construction and simplicity as will provide an effective guard or shield assuring against admission of water to the explosive engines of motor vehicles and consequent decrease in eificiency thereof.
Another object is the provision of a shield of this type capable of swift and convenient application to the body structures of motor vehicles and provided with means for direct ing water away from such parts of the motor and ignition system thereof as will be injuriously aflected thereby.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, reference now being had to the accompanying drawing wherein,
Figure 1 represents a fragmentary sectional view through the hood and dashboard of a motor vehicle illustrating the invention applied thereto.
Fig. 2 represents a perspective view of theF shield removed. f 1
i 3 re resents a ragmentary on itudir l sectibn through the shield in t e plane of one of the water pipes.
Referring to the drawings in detailwherein similar reference numerals designate cor responding parts thro hout the several views, the numeral 5 in mates the body of the improved shield which is preferably constructed of sheet metal of such thickness as to lend requisite strength and rigidity thereto and is turned downwardly on forwardly converging lines indicated by the numeral 6 to provide for proper lateral and forward deflection of such rain or other liquid as deposited thereon.
A retaining clip 7 is riveted or otherwise rigidly secured to the medial portion of the front edge of the body and its extremities are preferably brought into relatively close relation, as suggested in Fig. 2, to increase the gripping effect of the clip and consequently prevent accidental displacement of the shield when applied for use.
The rear portion of the body is directed downwardly to provide the depending portion 8 having the extreme ed e turned upwardly and rearwardly, providing a trough 9 extending throughout the entire width of the body 5 and closed at its terminals by the end walls 10. Parallel water conducting pipes 11 are connected adjacent the opposite extremities of the trough 9, depend therefrom and communicate at their upper extremities therewith. A gasket or packing strip 12 is secured along the upper extremity of the depending portlon 8 and is designed to abut a part of the body structure of. a motor vehicle as will hereinafter appear to establish a. water-tight joint therewith.
The improved shield is especially designed for use in connection with motor vehicles having a body structure of a ty suggested in Fig. 1 and consisting essentially of the usual dash-board 13 having connection with the depending supporting flange 14 of the cowl 15 and constituting a support for the rear extremity of the hood 16. In applying the invention thereto, the body member 5 is set upon the top edge of the dash-board 13 in such position that the depending portion 8 thereof overlies the rear surface of the dash-board 13, the trough 9 underlying the flange of the cowl 15. Subsequent to the application of the attachment to the dashboard 13, the cowl 15 is replaced and adequately secured in position, the packing strip 12 being securely clamped thereby to establish a tight joint. However, such liquid and moisture asfinds its way past the gasket is conducted directly into the trough 9 from which it is conducted by the pipes 11 and discharged at a predetermined point below the vehicle chassis. The upper portion of the hood 16 overlies the body plate 5 whereas the forward extremity of the latter inclines forwardly and downwardly and is supported upon the usual rod 17 connecting the dashboard 13 with the radiator (not shown),
the clip 17 bein utilized to grip the rod and maintain the s ield against accidental displacement or independent vibration incident to the operation of the engine or vehicle.
What is claimed is: The combination with the cowl, dash and hood portions of an automobile, of a moisture shield underlying the hood portion and in; clining forwardly and downwardly from thedash portion, the rear end of said shield extending over the top edge of the dash por- 5 tion and having its free edge portion bent to provide a depending flan e portion, and a gutter co-extensive. with t e lower edge of esajid-flange and underlying the line of connection of the cowl portion with the hood portion.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature hereto.
