PLATE-ATTACHING MEANS.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD H. LAWS, a citizen of the United States, residing in Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plate-Attaching Means of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates more particularly to means for attaching name plates to shells of automobile radiators, but may be used for fastening, plates to other objects and for other purposes.
Heretofore, trademark name plates have been applied to radiator shells by means of bolts, nuts and washers, whereby the plates were held upon the radiator shell by friction and it was necessary in such construction to apply the plate to the shell before the shell and other parts of the radiator were assembled. These plates are usually highly finished with enamel, varnish or nickel which is liable to be marred if secured to the ra diator shell before it is assembled with the other parts of the radiator.
The objects of my invention are to provide simple, convenient and efiicient means for securely and permanently fastening the name plate to the shell after the radiator shell and other parts of the radiator have been assembled so as to avoid damage to the plate and to permit the plate to be thus at tached after the automobile is otherwise com pletely finished, ready for shipment, and to conceal the attaching means from view, as-
well as from access to thereby prevent the removal of the name plate.
My invention consists in the parts and in the combination and arrangement of parts as herein set forth and claimed.

In. the embodiment of my invention as illustrated in Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive, tongue 1 has slot 2 provided with an enlarged couplingpin receiving opening 3 at its top. Said slot is curved rearwardly to form shouL der 4 to support coupling pin 5 in elevated position while the parts are being assembled, said slot inclining downwardly and forwardly toward the bottom of tongue 1 to receive coupling pin 5 which is reduced to form a circumferential channel 6 between its ends thereby forming cylindrical heads 7 and 8. Tongue 1 is soldered or otherwise secured in groove 9 in the rear wall of name plate 10 and when thus secured, the lower end of slot 2 extends into close proximity to said plate. The radiator shell or other base 11, is provided with a Greek crossshaped slot 12 adapted to receive tongue 1 and coupling pin 5 resting upon shoulder 4 and when said tongue is so inserted, the coupling pin will drop down in slot 2 and form a wedge, its central reduced part 6 bearing against wall a of slot 2 and its heads 7 and 8 bearing against the rear wall 13 of radiator shell or other base 11, thereby securely fastoning said name plate 10 against accidental or intentional removal or displacement.
It will be apparent that my invention is capable of some modification without departure from the spirit or scope thereof, as for instance, the construction may be modified as illustrated in Figs. 5 to 7 inclusive, in which the shell or base 11 is provided with a slot 12 having vertically disposed rearwardly extending flanges 14 curved at the'top and of gradually increasing width from top to bottom and also spaced apart from each other in gradually increased distance from top to bottom, and in which the plate 10 is provided with bifurcated tongue 1 secured thereto and having slot 2 slanting downwardlyaway from said plate through each wing 16 otsaid tongue, and having an enlarged opening 3' at ltStOP to receive coupling pin 5 which is adapted to rest on shoulder 4 when the parts, are
being assembled. In this construction, pin
5 having heads 7 and 8 and reduced portion 6, is first inserted through opening 3 where it rests upon shoulder 4 and said coupling pin together with the bifurcated tongue 1 is inserted into slot 12 whereupon the coupling pin will drop by gravity to the position shown'in Fig. 7 and thereby securely lock the name plate in position upon the base. 7
Fig. 8 shows aslightly modified form of tongue 1-" from that shown in Figs. and 6 and it may be employed either with a single tongue or a bifurcated tongue. Fig.
7 14 is an edgeview of the tongue shown in Fig. 8, and shows the part 6 thereof sprung slight'lyto one side of the lfiat face of the tongue to insure a close fit between the tongue and the'wall of slot 12 in order to prevent rattling of the parts. This form of tongue is illustrated in Fig. 11 where it is shown mounted in groove 9 of plate 10 and isadapted to receive coupling pin 5 (Fig. 12) and to be inserted in slot 12 7 shown in Fig. 10, the parts illustrated in Figs. 10, 11 andl2 being assembled as shown in Fig. 13. This construction of coupling pin is provided with heads 7 and 8 and with reduced parts 6". 2 is provided with enlarged receiving opening 3v and shoulder 4,v The parts in this construction are assembled in the same manner as shown and described with reference to the, several parts illustrated'in' Figs. 1 to a inclusive.
In all of these constructions the coupling pin is inserted in an enlarged opening at the top and rests upon a shoulder while the tongue of the plate is being inserted through the slot of the shell or base and after the tongue is inserted the pin will drop by The slot 7 gravity and securely wedge the parts together and hold the name plate in permanent position upon the shell, thereby preventing either accidental or intentional removal of the plate. 7
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is; 1. In plate attaching means, a plate, a tongue secured thereon at right angles thereto "and having a vertically inclined slot therein extending downwardly toward said plate at an acute angle, a coupling member adapted to be inserted in said slot and projectingto each side-of said tongue, and a base having a slot to receive said tongue and coupling memberwhereby said coupling member is adapted to wedge itself between said tongue and base to bind said plate to said base.

a'tongue mounted thereon and having a slot therein, a coupling pm adapted to be inserted in said slot, a base havinga slot therein and adapted to. receive said tongue and coupling pin, whereby said pin is adapted to be moved downwardly in saidslotted tongue to form a wedge between the 'wallof said tongue-and the wallof said base whereby said plate is securely "fastened to said base.
3. In plate attachingmeans, aplate having a vertical. groove in its rear wall, a tongue secured in said groove and having an inclined slot extending transversely through said tongue, a coupling pin having a cylindrical head upon eachvend, a base having avertical slot to receive saidfton'gu e and a transverse slotto receive said coupling pin whereby when saidf-tongue and said couplingpin'are inserted insaidslots said pin will beadapted to be moved rlownwardly in the tongue whereby the heads of said coupling pin will bear against the wall of said base and its reduced central part will bear against'the rear wall of the tongue slot, thereby forming fa wedge whereby said plate is permanently held in position :upon said base.

In'pl'ate attaching means, aname plate, a tongue secured thereon, and having a slot formed with ali enlarged part at its top and curved outwardly away from said name plate adjacent said enlarged part to form a shoulder and extending downwardly at an acute angle toward said name plate, a coupling pin adapted to be inserted transversely in said enlarged part of said slot and to rest upon said shoulder, and a slotted base adapted to receive said tongue and couplin pin whereby said pin is adapted to be move downwardly in said slot and act as a Wedge to bind said plate and base together.
6. In plate attaching means, a base having a slot, 21 name late having a slotted tongue thereon and aving a part of said tongue extending out of the plane of the side of said tongue to closely fit the wall of said slot and separate means for coupling said base and plate together.
