SAMUEL BERGER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
MOTOR MECHANISM FOR MECHANICAL TOYS.
Application filed June 1,
To all w 7mm it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL BERGER, a resident of New York city, county and State of'New York, and a citizen of the United States of America, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Motor Mechanism for Mechanical Toys, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in motor mechanism, more particularly for mechanical toys. My improvement is directed mainly to improvements in motor mechanism for toys involving a dancing figure, or a figure which has imparted thereto movements to simulate dancing. A further object of my invention is to improve the general construction of this type of mechanism, such for instance as the assembling of the working parts as an entirety and also the assembling of the individual parts. The above mentioned features are directed toward the production of an inexpensive, efficient motor mechanism.
I will now proceed to describe my invention in detail, the novel features of which I will finally point out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, Whereihzr Figure 1 is a top plan view of my improved motor mechanism;
Fig. 2 is a sectionalend view of the device as illustrated in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a side View, looking from the right in Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional detail view, the section being taken on a line 4-4 in 1; Fig. 5 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view looking'from the left in Fig. 2, the section being taken on a line 5-5 in Fig. 2;
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary detail view enlarged, illustrating the propelling device for the spindle which carries the figure;
Fig. 7 is an enlarged sectional detail view, the section being taken on a line 7-7 in Fig.6;and
Fig. 8 is a fragmentary plan view illustrating the star-wheel which is actuated bythe propeller.
The device, as herein illustrated, consists of a'box or casing member 9, a portion of which is shown, said box supporting the motor mechanism, indicated generally by 10.
The motor mechanism is made up of a frame Specification of Letters Patent.

member 11, in this instance of channel formation, which supports a train of intermeshing gears 12, 13, 14, 15 and 16 (Fig. 2), the gear 16 being the driving gear which is carried by a rotatable drum 1? surrounded by a spring 18. At one end spring 18 is connected to gear 16 and at the other end to a ratchet wheel 19. The ratchet 19 is carried by a shaft 20 terminating at one end in a handle 21 for winding the spring. The ratchet wheel 19 turns with shaft 20, or in other words is connected to shaft 20 and not to drum l7. Vhen shaft 20 is rotated in the proper direction, spring 18 will be wound up. To hold the spring, after it has been wound up, I provide a double pawl 22 pivotally connected to casing 9 at 23. The pivot 23 is located adjacent one end of the pawl 22, so that end 24 has the long travel. The distance between the teeth of the pawl will be such as to cause the advancing tooth nearest tooth 25 to force end 24 downwardly after said end 24 has been forced upwardly by an adjacent advancing tooth. In other words, the distance 26, between the teeth of the pawl, will be greater than distance 27 between the teeth of the ratchet 19. Consequently the inclined wall 28 of a tooth will force the end 24 of the pawl downwardly. To facilitate this action, the tooth 25 is made longer than the tooth. at the end 24 of the pawl. By means of the above construction a spring, to return the pawl, is not necessary.
To hold spring 18 under tension. after it has been wound up, or to any time prevent operation of the motor, I provide a brake mechanism consisting of a lever 29 pivoted at 30 to casing 9 and on the inside thereof. The lever at one end carries a nib 31 to engage the teeth of the adjacent gear 12 (in this instance) The upper end of lever 29 projects through an arcuate slot 32 in casing 9 and is provided with a button 33 to enable same to be moved to cause nib 31 to engage the teeth of gear 12 or to clear same. The channeled frame member 11, as can be gears 12 to 14, inclusive, and also one end of shaft 20 for ratchet 19, which shaft also loosely supports gear 16, the drum 17, at the end opposite to gear 16, being rotatably supported by the hub 34 on ratchet 19 (see Fig. 4). The frame 11 also sup ports a vertically movable rotatable spindle 35, which in turn carries the figure to be danced, a portion of such a figure being in- 'dle Without rotating same until the disk dicated by 36 (Fig. 2). To impart a rotary and also a vertical movement to spindle 35, I provide a propelling member 37 in the form of arms 38, in this instance formed integral with a plate 39 secured to a cylindrical drum 40 by clips 41 integral with the drum. As can be seen, the clips engage the plate portion 39 of the propeller and are passed over the edges of the plate. The head 42 of the drum is provided with a square opening 43 to fit the square shaft 44 upon which gears 14 and 15 are mounted, said gears being also provided with square openings to engage the shaft 44. After drum 40 and its attached propeller have been applied to the shaft 44, said shaft will be struck up between the end thereof and propeller 37 to form stops 45 and 46. The propelling device will be located between stops 45, 46 and the adjacent wall 51 of the frame 11 (see Fig. 7).
1 To cooperate with propeller 37, I provide spindle 35 with a disk 47 having depressions 49 to receive the end 50 of the wall 51 of frame 11 which does not extend the full length of the frame 11. The disk .47 will be secured to spindle 35. WVhen wheel 47 is in its lowermost position (see dotted lines Fig. 6), the end 50, of wall 51, will engage a depression 49 in the said wheel 4-7 and will continue to engage a depression until the wheel 47 is raised into alinement with the recess 52 in wall 51 (see Fig. 6). During the rotation of propeller 37, the arms, one at a time, will raise the disk 47 and hence spin- 47 is raised sufficiently to become alined with recess 52, after which it will be rotated duran arm from substantially a horizontal posimg the further movement of the arm 38 in contact therewith. During the movement of tion to an approximately vertical position, the shaft 35 will be raised, without being rotated, and then finally rotated. After an arm hascleared the disk 47, the figure and spindle will drop, after which the next arm 38 will repeat the motion above described.
It will be apparent that the figure 36 will have imparted thereto firstly a vertical movement and then a rotary movement, which during the operation of the device will be alternated, producing a very desirable movement on the part of the figure 35. V, r
The motor frame 11 is secured to the casing 9 by, means of clips 53 which are passed through openings in the side walls of the casing. The frame 11 acts to-brace' the eas- 'lIlfI 9, as well as to support the motor mech When frame 11 is removed, the motor an-ism. mechanism, exceptlng gear 16 and its operatmg spring, will be removedwith it. In
. other words, the frame 11 with its gears, propeller and spindle 35 are a assembled and placed in the casing. Therefore., the gears and propelling device 396d 1 plane parallel spindle carried by the unit that can be not be built into the casing. This is an advantage from a manufacturing point of v ew.
