CHARLES R. SHORT, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO GENERAL MOTORS COM-- PANY, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, A'CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
HYDROGARBON-MOTOR.
Application filed April 6,
To all whom it may concern:
- Be it known that 1, CHARLES R. SHORT, a subject of the King of Great Britian, and resident of Detroit, Wayne county, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hydrocarbon-Motors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hydrocarbon motors, and the principal object thereof is to provide an improved mounting of rotatable parts, such as are used for operating valve mechanisms therefor, and for efficiently lubricating such parts.
Another object of this invention is to simplify and improve the lubrication of puppet valve operating devices.
The invention in general may comprise in combination, a shaft having a channel portion and ports connecting the channel portion with the exterior of the shaft at a point whereon are mounted sleeve members, the shaft being supported in position in bosses provided with a hollow set screw or pin which also serves to conduct lubricants from the support to the shaft and the sleeve members.
The various objects will more clearly appear from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification and in which:
Figure 1 is a transverse vertical sectlon of the upper part of a hydrocarbon motor power plant, embodying. a preferred form of my invention;
Fig. 2'is a side elevation, with portions broken away of an assembly of the rocker arms, their mountings and the upper ends of the valve operating rods in a hydrocarbon motor; and
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section tlfirgpgh the hollow rocker arm supporting s a Referring to the drawings, 10 and 11 represent respectively, the upper half of the crank case and a cylinder, which form portions of a single casting. A 'shaft 12, provided with cams '13 and a crank shaft 14 are suitably mounted in the crank case 10 A piston and a connectinirod are respectively shown as 15 and 16. detachable head 17 may be mounted on the cylinder '11. as by bolts 18, and is provided with a valve Specification of Letters Patent.

mechanism, comprising a puppet member 19, spring 20, collar 21 and two part Iretaining plate 22.
Ashaft 23, having a longitudinally extending drilled out portion or channel 24, and a plurality of laterally arranged ports 25 connecting the channel portion with the exterlor, may be mounted in the bosses 26 of arms or standards 27, which may be secured as by bolts 28 on the cylinder head 17 Plugs in the form of disks 28 may be pressed or otherwise suitably secured over the ends 29 of the shaft 23 for closing them.
It is to be noted that the shaft 23 is provided with another laterally arranged inlet port 30, which is adapted when the shaft is mounted in its support, to register with a port 31 formed in the boss 26. The shaft is then held in position by threading a hollow pin or set screw 32 screwing into the port 31 until the lower end of the pin abuts against the counter sunk portion 33 of the shaft port 30. Lubricant may be introduced into the interior of the shaft when in this position, through the interior of the set screw 32, which may be closed by a cap 34 as by threading it thereon.
Strips of absorbent material such as felt,
may be introduced into the shaft 23 thr u h the ports 25, as shown at 35, and rocker arms 36 slipped on the shaft with their interiors adjacent these strips. The rocker arms may then be held in position by plates 37 and split rings 38 of the usual form. One end of each of the rocker arms is formed with a curved shoe 39 which is adapted to abut against the upper end 40 of the valve member 19. Arranged in the opposite end of the rocker arm in a socket portion 41, is a ball member 42, the lower end of which is suitably connected in adjfustabl'e relation with the upper end of an operating rod 43. The lower end of this rod is connected with a tappet 44, mounted in a guide 45 in the crank case 10 and adapted to be operated by a cam shaft 13,011 the shaft 12.
While I have described and will s ecifi- I claim and desire to secure by Letters Pat cut is:
