To all whomv it may concern.
Be it known that I, SAMUEL J. 'NILsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Roberts, in the county of Jefferson and State of Idaho, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Beet-Topping Apparatus, the same bein a division of my co-pending application, Serial. No. 270,91, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in beet harvesters and has relation more particularly to a rotary lifting memher, and it is an object of the invention to provide a lifting member with improved penetrating members coacting with the severed crowns of the beets to convey the same upwardly to a desired point of delivery.

The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary view partly in side elevation and partly in section illustrating a rotary lifting member constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention;
Fig. 2 is a view in front elevation of one of the penetrating members carried by the rotary lifting member, said rotary lifting member being fragmentarily shown in section;
Fig. 3 is a view in side elevation of the penetrating member as disclosed in Fig. 2, the coasting portion of the rotary lifting member being also indicated in section; and
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view illustrating in top plan the penetrating member as disclosed in Figs. 2 and 3.

In practice, the member R- is in close proximity to the digging element 32 in advance thereof and rearwardly of the cutting means 58 and also in close proximity to but free of contact with the ground level. The member R is cylindrical in form and includes an annular rim 11 of desired width and radiating from said arm 11 are the penetrating teeth M.
Theteeth M comprise a plurality of series disposed transversely of the rim, said series of teeth being preferably equidistantly spaced with the teeth M of one series staggered with relation to the teeth of adjacent series. As is illustrated in Figs. 2, 3 and .4, each of the teeth M comprises a blade 12 having its outer end portion 14 pointed and with its opposite faces convex so that the edges of the blade 12 are substantially sharp. The inner or base portion of the blade 12, at substantially its center, is provided with a shank 15, preferably square in cross section, and which snugly fits within the cor-- respondingly formed opening 16 produced in the rim 11 of the member R. The outer portion 15 of the shank 15 is circular in cross section and has threaded thereon a clamping nut 17 which coacts with the inner or under face of the rim 11 to maintain effectually the tooth M in applied position.
As is particularl i illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3, the edges of the blade 12 are disposed in a direction substantially at right angles to the axis of the member R or more particularly the shaft 10 upon which the same is mounted. The outer or pointed eX- tremity 1 1 of the blade 12 is provided with the outwardly and oppositely directed ribs 18, each preferably substantially in the form of an inverted triangle with the free edges thereof sharpenec. The ribs 18 are also disposed in a direction longitudinally of the member R or in a direction transversely of the frame F. The member R is adapted to be rotated in any desired manner but more particularly by the mechanism or means disclosed in my prior application hereinbefore referred to and of which the present application is a division.
In practice, as the machine proper advances, the means 58 cut into the crowns of the beets and about the time the crown is January 11,
carried upwardly by the member completely severed, the same is penetrated by one' or more teeth Mof the member R at a point slightly in advance of the vertical center of the member. The severed crown is R to a suitable point of delivery as is particularly described and illustrated in my prior appli of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing spirit thereof, and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim V 1. A machine of the character described including a movable member, spaced teeth carried by said member,
from the principles and each tooth having convex sides merging with each other at their edges, ribs projecting from the intermediate portion of said sides longitudinally thereof, said ribs and convex sides tapering toward and merging at a point centrally of one end of the tooth, and opposed lips projecting from said tapered end in alinement with each other and in right angular relation to said convex sides.
2. A machine of the character described including a movable member, spaced teeth carried by said member, each tooth having convex sides merging with each other at their edges, ribs projecting from the intermediate portion of said sides longitudinally thereof, said ribs and convex sides tapering toward and merging at a point centrally of one end of the tooth, and opposed lips projecting from said tapered end of the tooth, the endsof said lips terminating at said end of the tooth, the sides of said lips projecting beyond the longitudinal ribs of the tooth.
