ROAD-MACHINE.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OSCAR M. LAoKIn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Duluth, in the county of St. Louis and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in BoadMachines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to road machines used for the purpose of clearing the road or path of snow or vegetation, or for transfer-- ring earth from the ditch to the center of a road.
Primarily, the object of my invention is to provide a more efficient snow plow, which may be adjustable at any angle, than any now in use.
This principle may also be applied to machines used to remove dirt from the center of a road to the ditch, etc.
Other objects will appear as the description proceeds and with reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which like numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views of which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of one embodi ment of my invention, showing various positions of the plow member in dotted lines.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of one form of plow, having an adjustable angle.
Fig. 3 is a rear end view of the sleds showing the anti-side slipping devlce at tached.
My improved snow plow consists of a forward guiding sled 1 mounted on runners in any approved fashion and adapted to be pulled by either horses or tractor. The sleds are provided with depending iron plates attached as at 12, Fig. 3, which prevent side slipping. These plates extend about three inches below the bottom of the runners. A beam 2, pivoted to pilot sled 1, as at 3, is rigidly connected to a rear sled similar to forward one, as by bolts 45 to cross ties 5. The plow proper is composed of sides 6 attached at an angle which may be adjustable.
One form of adjustable plow is shown in Fig. 2. Sides 6 are connected by a hlnge 7 and the cross ties are composed of members Specification of Letters Patent.

8 and 9, one sliding within the other and aving alining holes at suitable intervals to receive a bolt which looks the two members. The beam 2 may be of the same adjustable nature as parts 8 and 9, Fig. 2 and pilot sled 1 and plow 6 are provided at suitable places with ring bolts 10. Chains 11, adjustable in length in any suitable manner are provided with grab hooks at each end to connect the plow to the beam. By attaching short chains to proper ring bolts the plow can be made to throw the snow from any part of the road to any other, as shown in dotted lines, Fig. 1. The two sleds and the rigid beam provide a firm base against which the plow member may pull and yet not be displaced from the road. The plow member is designed to be of such a size and weight that it will not ride over the drifts.
Obviously, other modifications of this principle may be utilized other than for the purpose of a snow plow without departing from the spirit of my invention, but it will be readily apparent that I have devised a machine which may be adjusted to any width and adapted to clear any part of the road without the sleds and motive power leaving the center thereof.
What I claim and desire to secure by Let ters Patent is:
1. In a device of the character described, pilot means, a rear supporting means, a beam connecting the two, and a plow flexibly connected to the beam and bodily movable in relation to the beam laterally and axially whereby the snow or other material may be shifted to one side or the other of the roadway or divided centrally and a part directed to each side.
2. The device of claim 1, said plow being connected to the beam by means of 3 adjustable flexible members limiting the lateral, longitudinal, and axial movement of the plow.
3. The device of claim 1, said plow being of inverted V-shape, the apex of the V being a pivot point, and means to regulate the angularity of inclination of the sides of the plow.
