IMPROVEMENT IN PRINTING-TYPES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 139,365, dated Ma-y 27, 1873; application filed March l?, 1873.
.in Making Printing-Types; and I do hereby declare that the following :is a full, clear, and
` exact description of the construction of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings making a part of this specification.
Figures in printing-types are now cast onehalf of the width of the body of the type, and fractions are cast either onehalf the width or the same width as the body of the type. These I show in Figure 1 of the ldrawing annexed.
Gompositors justify the blanks in columns of figures and fractions by means of en and other quads.
These figures and fractions, when cast in small type, such as nonpareil, agate, and smaller, are very indistinct, and especially so when printed in common newspaper work. To obviate this indistinctness I construct the figures broader, by casting them two-thirds of the width of the body, whereby they are easily justified by two of the ordinary three-in-em spaces; and I propose to enlarge the face of the fractions by omitting the line between the cast upon a block equal to two-thirds the width of the body of the ein7 or standard type.
