NAIL-CONTAINER AND NAIL-DELIVERING DEVICE.
, Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 10, 1920. Serial No. 387,947.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR REGINALD vVnnewoon TANNER, subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Little Sutton, in the county of Chester and Kingdom of England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nail-Containers and Nail- Delivering Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved nail container and nail delivering device which is also applicable for screws and small headed shanks.
It is the object of the invention to provide a device which will enable nails to be removed manually in groups of any desired number and to provide means for a fresh supply of these to take the place of those which have been removed. It is a further object of the invention to provide an upper holder for nails in mass and a lower holder which delivers nails in ordered sequence and to combine these holders in such manner that two phases of operation will take place, viz. one phase in which the upper holder delivers a limited number of nails to the lower holder, and a second phase in which this limited number of nails is arranged in ordered sequence within said lower holder. It has been found necessary to joggle or agitate the holders for this purpose and if too many nails are delivered into the lower box at once, choking takes place. It is a further object of theinvention to provide such mechanical connections for the two boxes that an even feed takes place from the upper box to the lower box and nails can be evenly removed from said lower box.
The invention is more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a side View of one form of the device.
Fig. 2 is an end View.
In these drawings, 1 is an upper nail box having a handle 2 and one or more side slots 3 which allow a plurality of nails to fall through. This box is hinged at 4: to a lower box 5 which is rectangular at the top. The bottom is formed of two inclined sides 6 between which is formed a slot which in Fig. 2 is shown as filled with a nail 7 The slot just contains the stem of the nail, but the head of the nail cannot pass through. 8 is a spring device which is attached by the screw 9 and can be adjusted by the screw 10,

since it is necessary that this spring should be just strong enough to prevent nails fall- 1ng out and yet not too strong to prevent them from being removed readily by hand. The box 5 is provided with side grooves 11 engaging in rollers 12 on the standards 13 carried on a base 14;. The box 1 is pivotally mounted at 15 on the standard 13.
By reason of this pivotal'mounting of the box 1 filled with nails, any movement ofv this box, either direct or indirectly about the pivot 15, due to the manual operation of withdrawing a nail, screw or the like past the spring 8 or other restraining device, will cause a moving or joggling of the box 1, so that a number of nails fall through the wide slot or slots 8 into the box 5.
It will be noted that as the box 1 moves, so also doesthe box 5 slide on a roller 12 and therefore while nails are being transferred from box 1 to box 5, nails are also being allowed to fall Within the slot at the bottom of box 5 to dispose themselves in correct disposition, that is to say head up ward and in ordered sequence as shown in Fig. 1. The boxes move eccentrically so that when the upper box is out of the position of delivery, the lower box is'being joggled to assemble'the nails in ordered sequence. One or a series of these nails can then be grasped by hand and pulled past the spring 8 when they are ready for use. It will be seen that the box 1 can be operated to deliver suiiicient nails to the box 5 to enable them to fall within the slot, as if the box 5 is filled full of nails, it is found that the nails do not readily fall within the narrow slot in the bottom thereof.
I declare that what I claim is A nail holder comprising a standard, an upper container pivoted thereon, a lower slotted box connected with the upper box, a spring at the end of said slot, means to allow the lower box to slide freely with re spect to said standard during the nail-sorting operation, and a connection between sai upper and lower boxes.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto signed my name this 20 day of May, 1920, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ARTHUR REGINALD WEDGWOOD TANNER.
