Be it known that 1 Louis JoURDAiN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lowell, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Thread-Cutters for Looms; and I do declare the following to be aIfull,'-elea'r; and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which. it appeitains to make and use the same. v This invention relates to an improved thread cutter for use in connection with a .loom and one object of the invention is to 15 provide the thread cutter'with an improved construction of knife carryingarmand improved means for mounting the arm, the mounting for the arm' including a rocker shaft and an actuating lever adapted for engaging an abutment normally held out of position for engagement by the lever.
Another object of the invention is to so construct and mount the knife carrying bracket armlthat itinay be adjusted to the proper position and releasably held in the set position. I

Another object of the invention is to so mount this'abutment arm that it may be freely moved by the spring but movement of this springlimited through the medium of an adjustably mounted stop.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved type of block carrying plunger, the plunger being slidably mounted and yieldably held in a normal position with the block carried thereby extending for engagement by the thread cutting blade.

This improved thread cutting device is used in connection with a conventional construction of loom which includes abreast beam 1 lay beam 2, hand rail 3 and reed 4. A rocker shaft 5 is rotatably mounted in bearings 6 and extends longitudinally beneath the lay beam 2. This rocker shaft carries a U-shaped bracket arm which is mounted upon the rocker shaft as shown clearly in Fig. 4 and releasably held in" a set position thereon by the set screw 8. The arm 9' of this bracket 7 extends transversely beneath the lay beam and carries a screw 10 which forms an abutment or stop for engaging the under face of the lay beam, a locking nut 11 being mounted upon this'screw so that the screw may be securely held in a set position. The shorter arm 12 of this bracket extends above the lay beam and has its free end portion bifurcated to receive the cutting blade 13. This cutting blade is held in place'by thefasteners 14 which may be removable so that the blade may be removed and sharpened when necessary. A block '15, is mounted upon the rocker shaft 5 and provided with a tongue extension 16 with which a lever 17 is connected by fasteners 18 and this lever 17 is provided witha depending free end portion which carries an abutment'pin 19 by means of which the lever may be swung to rotate the shaft 5 and thus swing the bracket 7 to move the cutting blade 13 though-the reed. In order to permit the lever 17 to be moved to rotatethe rocker shaft,- there has- 7 beenprovided an abutment strip 33 which is pivotally connected with the supporting bar 34 by a securing bolt '35 and nut 36. This bolt 35 extends through a slot 37 Iformed longitudinally in the bar 34and has its .head seated in the longitudinally extending seat 38'cut from the inner face of the bar as shown in Figs. 6 and 7. A spring 39 has its upper end connected with one of the fastener bolts or screws 40 which pass through the openings'41 in the end portions of the bar 34 and this. spring has its lower end secured in the opening 42 at the side of the strip 33. It will thus be seen that the spring will tend to return the strip 33 to the position shown in Figs. 31 and 6 when the chain or line 43 is released. This chain 43 extends for engagement with the usual mechanism provided upon looms for holding abutments of this type out of the operative position. A bolt 44 which is similar to the bolt 35 is passed through the slot37 and carries a securing nut 45 which engages a washer 46. This washer 46 is provided with a pin extension 47 which extends as shown and has its free end portion bent outwardly for engaging the side edge of the strip 33 .and thus limiting movement of the strip under action of the spring 39. Therefore, the abutment strip can be prevented from moving beyond the vertical position when drawn by this spring, or it may be stopped in an inclined position if desired.
When'this device is in'use, it is assembled as shown and the chain 43 will be drawn upon to move the abutment strip 33 to the dotted line position of Fig. 3. The lay beam can'then have movement toward the abutment strip 33. When the thread is to be cut, the chain is automatically released in the usual manner, and the spring 39 will move the abutment strip to the position shown in Fig. 3 thus placing this strip in tate the rocker shaft and swing the bracket and will cut the thread against the block 20, the plunger 21 moving against the action of the spring 30 so-that none of the parts will be broken. If it is found that the bracket is not, in the proper position, the set screw 8' can be "loosened and the bracket placed at the proper angle and the set screw then tightened. The abutment bolt 1Q may also be adjusted .so that it will properly engage thev underfaceof the lay beam 2 when the device is in the operative position and thus insureproper-positioning of arm 17 when the device is in'the operative position.
There has thus been prov-idedi'a thread cuttingmechanism which is so constructed and assembledithat it maybe properly adjusted incase' it does not properly cut the thread. r ,What is'claimed is;
1. The combination with a loom structure including abreast beam,- a lay beami and ,a reed, of a rocker shaft rotatably mounted beneath the lay beam, a U-shaped bracket 4. abutment connected with the breast beam and movable into vand out'of an operative position, a lever arm mounted upon the rocker shaft, and an abutment carried by the lever arm for engaging the abutment of'the breast beam and swinging the lever to rotate the rockershaft and move the blade carried by said bracket through the reed into engagement with the block when the abutment of the" breast beam .is in an operative position.
2. The combination with a loom structure including a breast beam, a lay'beam, and
a reed, of a cutting element movably asso elated with the lay beam and including an actuating leverhaving a side pin, a supporting strip connected with the breastbeam and having a longitudinally extending slot, an
abutment strip, asecuring screw extending through the slot of the supporting strip. and through an opening formed in the upper end portion of the abutment strip to adjustably and pivotally connect the abutment strip with the supporting strip, a spring yieldably retaining the abutment strip in an operative position for engagement with the abutment pin of said lever, and means for swinging the abutment strip out of the operative position.
3. The combination with a loom structure including a breast beam, a lay beam and a reed, of a cutting element movably connected with a lay beam for movement through the reed, and including an actuating lever, a pressure block carrying element connected with the breast beam in operative relation to the cutting element, and an abutment element connected With the breast beam and including a supporting strip, an
abutment strip slidably and pivotally connected with the supporting strip, a stop con nected with the supporting strip for engaging the abutment strip and limiting swinging movement in one direction, resilient means yieldably retaining the abutment strip in an operative position for engagement with the lever of the cutting element, and means for moving the abutment strip out of the operative position.
