aDJbsrABLE CHAIR.
Application filed April 26,
To all whom it may aonceim:
Be it known that 1, Oscar: Hi Sc mitar, a States, and resident of Oshkosh, in the county of Winnebiigo and State ofVVisconsin, have invented certain Adjustable declare that the and exact descrip- Chairsyand I do hereby hers thereof may be may be inclined downwardly toward its rear 'end to suit the comfort requlrernents of the :justment of this user. i u It is further my object to provlde an adcharacter which may be effected in a most convenient and ready man 1 her, and to this end it is more particularly Iny object to providean arrangement for counter-balancing the normal weight of the upper portion of the chair with respect to theadjustable leg members whereby theseat member may be thus adjusted with a mini? mum amount of effort.
A stillfurther object is to embody the aforerecited features of construction in a i rocker chair of the heavy upholstered type I wherein the operative parts of the lng mechanism adjustare housed within th'e'structure of the chair in such manner :as not to detract from the desired attractive appearance of the chair structure.
"With the above and other objects and advantages in view, which will be apparent asth'e description proceeds, my invention.

In the accompanying drawings Figure .1 is a vertical sectional View through a rocker chair constructed in accordance with my invention, the plane of this section'being indicated by the line 1-1 of Fig. r V i Fig. 2 is a side elevational view lower portion of the frame structure chair. y Fig. 3lS a. sectional view defined the of the chairin a plane at right anglesto the plane of Fig; 1, as indicated bythe line 3- 3 of Fig. l 13 horizontal sectional iew fLlI' Oll a plane indicated by the line 4% of Fig; 1. respectively. Back with and 'extendupwardly irom the rear cross pieces 9, while arm rest posts 10 exthrough the.-
the plane of this the :frame work of the chair structure constituting the present embodi comprises the usual *froiit, rear and sideseat box sills 5, 6 and 7;
of the tend upwardly from the forward corners oi the chairbox and are connected with these parts, and in completing the chair,
all of these parts would be suitably cush-' ioned and upholstered.
The sills of the seat box are connected by the usual triangular brace blocks 13 set in the corners of the box and suitably fixed tothe sills.
By reason of the depth of the cushion seatlstructure in the present type of chair, the legs of the chair are relatively short, and the front legs 1d of the chairare rigidly secured toarcu'ate rocker bars 15, the upper endportions of the legs being reduced and passed through apertures in the forward brace blocks 13, this. reduction of the upper portions of the legs forming consequent shoulders le which substantially abut the bottonrcorner portions of the seat box. The reduced leg portionsare slightly loose in the blocks 13 whereby they aretpermitbox sill 6"being cut away ted slight movement in a direction longitudinally of the rocker bars, and this movement is rendered pivotal in nature by pins 16 passing through the upper portions of the legs and through the side sills 7 and blocks 13. 7
The rear legs 17 of the chair are rigidly secured to the rear portions of the rocker bars 15 and have their upper end portions reduced similarly to the front legs, the reduced portions belng slidable in apertures m the rear brace blocks 13 and this reduction of the rear legs forms consequent shoulders "18 at the intermediate portions of the legs,
. a certain pivotal movement of the front movement of the 3D legs and secured to the 'tractile coil springs legs 14, although in practice this pivotal front legs is inconsequential. The weight of the seat and back structure of the chair is counter-balanced by coir 19 secured to the bracket arms 20 at'the upper extremities of the rear rear corner braces 13,
wliicl1 are disposed therebelow.
I adj ustably [The rear porton of the seat structure is held at any desired elevation by a pair of levers 21, intermediately pivoted to the seat structure, preferably at the inner face of the rear box sill 6, the outer end portions of theselevers passing into the upper portions of the rearlegs legs.
17 ,,through wear plates 22 secured to the inner sides of said The inner ends of the levers 21'have common pivotal connection with an'operatmg link.21 which "extends upwardly in the substantial plane of theback of the chair and which is pivotally connected with a crank arm 23 on one end of a stub shaft 24 which is j'ournaled in a bearing bracket 25 secured to and depending from the upper cross piece 9 of the back structure. The outer end of the shaft carries an'upstanding lever 26 and this handle lever is ad ustably held in any desired position by a plunger bar 27 slidable through a longitudinal bore in'the handle andprojecting from the outer end of the handle, the inner en l of the bar 27 being I bentlaterally 'and'passed through a long 'tudinal slot in the handle lever and constituting a pawl member28 selectively engageable in recesses of a rack segment 29 secured to the rear face of the cross piece 9, the pawl member being resiliently urged to engaging by a coil spring 30 disposed in the crank arm 23 member. It is noted that the and extending into the recesses ment of the seat structure is shielded in the present structure by angle plates 31 extending about the intermediate portions of the rear legs and having their ends secured respectively to the side sills 7 and the rear sill (5, said angle plates also forming a stationary corner structure for the seat box and serving to brace the general structure, arms 32 extending upwardly from the plates for securement to the lower ends of the rear posts 8 to provide additional bracing means.
I have thus provided a fairly simple structure which may be readily incorporated in the construction of a chair of the type herein shown, and of other types of chairs, and which provides for a ready adjustment of the inclination of the-seat member of the chair to meet the requirements of the user. by simply rocking the handle lever 26, the pawl of said lever being released by simply depressing the plunger 27 with the linger of the hand which grasps the lever. It is noted that the spring 27 counterbalanccs the weight of the seat member from the lever mechanism when procuring the desired adjustment. It will further be appreciated that while I have shown lever connections for adjusting the legs 1?, the same results might be accomplished by permitting the legs to slide freely within the frame and using a bolt and wing lock to lock them in desiredor adjusted position.
While I have shown and described a preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be appreciated that various changes and modifications of structure and arrangement may be employed to meet differing conditions of use and manufacture without departing in any manner from the spirit of my invention.
What is claimed is:
1. A chair comprising a seat member, support legs for said seat member movable relative thereto, a pair of levers pivotally connected with the seat member and engaging said support legs, a common control lever, link means connecting said common control lever and said pair of lovers and means for holding said common control lever against movement. 7
2. A chair comprising a seat member including a frame, triangular corner braces in said frame provided with recesses, front legs having their upper end portions reduced and having slight lateral movement therein. the reduction of said front legs forming intermediate lUi shoulders engageable with the seat frame, rear legs having slidable engagement with the seat member and means for adjustably holding said ment.
3. A chair including a seat frame having its rear corner portions cut away, front legs connected With the forward corner portions of the seat frame, rear legs having their intermecliate portions slidable in the cut away rear corner portions of the frame, angular the frame and means for rear legs against sliding move shield plates disposed about the cut away portions of the frame and rigidly secured to adjustably hold- 111g said frame and rear legs against relative movement.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set. my hand at Oshkosh, in the county of Winnebago and State of Wisoonsin.
