L393fl$$ Specification of hettert Patent.
application aiea November in, rare. serial To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, EDWARD J. Dinner, Jr, citizen of the United States, and resldent of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamps, of which the following is a specification.
The; object-of my invention is the productron ofa lamp face of the person looking therem is illuminated by the rays. from the lamp without causing loss of accurate vision t due to glare from the light rays. Resultant glare has been the usual combinations of and lamps and in the reat drawback ,in the dressing table mirrors long run, has rendered thtem unmarketable. In my" invention Ill overcome this feature by placing'the mirror below the light source yet keep the light source tilted and high enough over the head of the observer to prevent the light rays from the lamp from reachin the eye irectly. The majority of the ight rays are directed to the face however in sufiicient quantities and at proper angles to illumimate it and cause a brilliant image to be There are-niephanical features in connection wfith co- Incident adjustment of lamp and mlrror is further explained.
igure 1 is an elevation of the apparatus adjustment of lamp and mirror when in use, and broken the device. 1
Fig. 2is a detail view showing the upper mechanical lamp connection.
Fig. 3 is an elevation of Fig. 2-1ooking in direction of arrow 3 in Fig. 2, partly in section.
Fig. 4 is a detail of the nection. p In the figures, 1 's the .base of a lamp here shown of the so-called boudoir type. The base forms a box 2 (which an purpose) and is provided with a lower mirror conhis cover revolves on a pivot 5 towhich is attachedapulleyt and a strap 7 fastened for dressing tables; and the T like which is supplied with a mlrror, so I 6 laced and operated in connection with' the of th amp that the lamp and mirror placed at a server at the may be used for cover. aving on 1ts lnner surface a mirror 4.
to the pulley passes through the tubular carrying arm 8 of the lamp and the strap ends are mounted at-the bifurcated bracket member 9 by pins 10. This bracket member 1s to the socket 11 socket carries a bulb 14 and a shade 15. he operation of the device is as follows: e openlng of the cover causes the pulley pull on one side e strap to turn the bracket 9 which card lamp to the position shown 1n the dotted lines. The closing of e ,cover causes a counter-revolution fof the pulley, 'WlllOll' exerts a corres 'onding pull on the strap causing the bihurcated racket to return to the normal position corres ending to the closed cover.
he purpose of this lamp tilting in connection 'w1th the mirror cover is to enable a erson to see his reflection in the full glow o the light because of the tilted lamp; the
means of connected below and in front of the light rays and therefore the eye will not be dazzled by the beam fromthe I It is useless to brllliantly illuminated reflected image in a mirror, if the eye of the observer'has been partially blinded by the glare. mirror is not in use the lamp has the conventlonal appearance. (The materials of which the lamp is composed can be of any known type. The strap for use in connection with the pulls s can be of wire metal or leather. he am is shown wired at 16 but ilt can beusecF in connection with gas or 01 I have also found that the arm 8 can be greater angle to the base than 1s shown in drawing so that althou h the lamp is tilted, it is positioned somewl at behind but above the mirror, therays of light still being directed on the pro er angle. 7 Having descri ed my invention what I claim is: a I
1. A lamp consisting of a base, an arm and a light source, the base being provided with a hinged cover containing a mirror, such cover being connected to means extending through the arm and connected to the'light' source for rotation thereof when the mirror is positioned for'use. I
by means of pin 13. The strapupper extremity of the arm on a by means of nipple 12. The i head of the observer is, however, generally a face of the obi mo est 2. A lamp consisting of a base, an arm and a light source, the base being provided with a. hinged cover containing a mirror, and the light source with a bifurcated bracket member, the rotating member of the cover being connected to a strap extending through the arm and fastened to the bracket to rotate the light source when the mirror is positioned for use.
Signed at New York city, in the county 10 of ew York and State of New York this 13th. day of November, A. D. 1919.
