In the form shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3, 9 and 10 preferably a divided burner is used, the
heat from which enters the central lower compartment 35, passing upwardly at the compartments its full effect is obtained and Aao that the loss by radiation of heat is reduced to a minimum. It will also be seen that the greatest degree of heat is delivered into the lower ory heating compartment 35 directly over the `smoothing portion of the iron,` while theside and top compartments which almost entirely surround the heating compartmentV act as heat retaining compartments. I
The openings 32 allow for the proper disposition of the gases in such manner as to least aii'ect the operator, while the iron gets the full benet of the gas consumed.
In the modifications shownV in Figs. 5, 11,
' 12, 13 and 14, theburner is not divided, and
has only one outlet which is adapted to engage the burner inlet 31, and one waste gas outlet 32, both openings being covered when the burner is removed by means of a-'swinging plate 28, connected with the rear plate of the iron by screws 41 in. Fig. 5.V In this modification a shutter plate 28 is shown closed and having no opening for the 'waste gas outlet shown in Figs. 3, 11, 12, and 14, although this may also be provided if desired. The position of the plate when the burner is in position is indicated by a broken line, while the broken line indicating the plate in Fig. 3 shows the same in its position when the burnerv is removed,tlie inspectionopening 33 being shown asA covered with a swinging cover 34. v Avsimilar adaptation Jfor the heater with only one burner outlet is shown in Figs. 11, 12, 13 and'14,

F ig. 4 shows a modilication in which instead ot using a heater with natural or artilicial gas, a known arrangement for gasiiying 'luids is used, which is connected with the fiat iron rear plate by the same means and with the shutter and holder hereinbefore described. It will be obvious that the same hat iron canV be used with a burner for gas,
or with a burner for gasifying fluids, which latter is inclosed in a bulb or container 43 as indicated in Fig. 4, and which contains all necessary means for regulating the control ot the liquid, its gasiifying and the admission oi air to miX with and burn the liquid gas.
From the foregoing it will be seen that a scientically arranged iron has been presented', which may be used with either gas orV gasiiying fluids with equal facility, and in which the heat is fully conserved before the waste gas is 'released into the atmosphere. l
Having thus described my invention and set forth its application and use, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. fln a device oi the class described, the combination with a hollow body constituting a {iat-iron and having'a number of compartments therein connected with each other to form a continuous passagethe lowermost oi said compartments having an exit for the waste gases, of a burner detachably connected with said iron, means for positively engaging said burner with said iron, said means also operating to cover, upon the removal of said burner, automatically the openings in said iron connecting its compartments with the atmosphere, and means for regulating the supply of gas and combustion and heat into the iron.
2. in a device of the class described, the combination with a hollow body of metal or the like suitable for the purpose of ironing or smoothing, having gas and air inlet with Y controlling means therefor on the rear side of the iron only, of a plurality of compartmentsv connected with each other to form a continuous passage for the heating gas, a burnerand air entrance in the lowermost of said compartments, anexit for waste gas arranged in the uppermost of said'compartments, and means for automatically covering said exit and the burner and air entrance upon the removal of said burner, said meansbeing also operative to engage said burner with said iron.

5; In a device of the class described, the combination with a hollow compartment iron, of a handle, an automatic shutter and holder, a detachable heater for gas or gasifying liquids having the highest operative temperature on the bottom of the iron, and means for lessen'ing loss of heat by radia tion comprising surrounding compartments connected as continuous flues beginning with the gas and air inlet and ending with the waste gas outlet, said shutter being adapted inlet and the waste gas outlet when the heater is removed.`
6. ln a device of the class described, the
`combination with a hollow compartment iron, of a handle, an automatic shutter and' holder, a detachable heater for gas or asi-` partments to carry off thecombustion gases and having all operation entrances and outlets closed when the heater is detached, substantially as specified and shown.

In a device of the class described, the combination with a hollow iron having a. series of compartments formedtherein and connected as continuously operating flues starting with the gas and air inlet and endingwith the waste gas outlet if the burner is attached, operating handle for the iron, a detachable heater adapted `to be connected with the iron and its burner linlet with the bottom compartment of the iron, means for holding` said heater in operative position upon said'iron, and a shutter adapted to open lthe gas and air inlet and the waste gas outlet and to secure the heater connection when the heater is attached and to close automatically the gas and airfinlet and the waste gas outlet of the iron against the atmosphere when the heater is detached.

In a devceof the class described, the combination with a hollow iron, upper and lower` compartments formed in the interior of saidironjand opening one into another to permit the passage of heat therethrough from the combustion chamber above `the soothing surface asa continuous connected flue to the closable waste gas outlet, an operating handle, a detachable heater arranged andadapted to connect through the gas and air inlet intb the lower compartments of the iron` means for holding said heater in operative position upon its iron, and means for automatically closing the inlets forgasY and air and the waste gas outlet of the iron when the heaterI is detached therefrom.
9. In a device of the class described, a

In a device of the class described, a hollow iron having a heating compartment at the bottom part thereof, heat retaining compartments inelosing said heating compartments on all sides except the bottom side thereof, forming a combustion chamber at the bottom of said iron and from these continuously connected iues to the waste gas outlet, a detachable burner arranged to connect with its outlet with the combustion chamber, means for holding said burner in operative position, and means for closing the inlet to said combustion chamber and the waste gas outlet of its surrounding flues automatically when the burner is detached.

In a device of the class described, a hollow iron having a heating compartment formed in the lower part thereof, heat retaining compartments formed at the sides and top of said heating compartment, said compartments having intereommunicating' burner is attached and interlocking means formed with said burner and shutter adapted to hold said burner in operative position with relation to the iron.

In a device of the class described, a hollow iron having a heating compartment formed in the lower part thereof, heat retaining compartments formed at the sides and top of said heating compartment, said compartments having intercommunicating means for the passage of heat therethrough forming a combustion chamber at the bottom of said iron and from these continuouslyv connected flues for allowing the leading of of the waste heat as described and shown, a deatchable burner adapted to connect its outlet with the combustion chamber as the first heating compartment, a shutter adapted to close the inlet into said heating compartment and the waste gas outlet of the last and uppermost compartment automatically when the burner 'is removed, interlocking mea-ns formed with said burner and shut- 'ter adapted to hold said burner in operative position with relation to the iron, said iron having an inspection opening formed in the lower compartment thereof and a cover adapted to close the same automatically when not in use.
