To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, VIRGIL BALLoU, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Oskaloosa, in the county of Mahaska and State of Iowa, have invented a certain new and useful Furnace, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to furnaces of the hot water or steam heating type.
The object of my invention is to provide a furnace of the general type mentioned, having an arrangement of water boiler and fire box, with means for conducting air to the fire box and through the boiler for giving a maximum of heat to the boiler and for securing a complete combustion of fuel.
Other objects will appear throughout the following specification.
With the above and other objects in view,
my invention consists in the construction, arrangement and 'OOIIlblllfitlOIl of the various parts of the device, whereby the objects contemplated are attained, as hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in my claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

In the accompanying drawings I have used the reference numeral 10 to indicate generally the outer casing of my improved furnace, which may bemade of brick or any other suitable material.

Located on the interior of the furnace above the fire box 12; is a drum-shaped boiler 16, the central portion of which is open, as illustrated in Figs. II and III, at 17. Above the boiler 16 is a water reservoir 18, which communicates with the boiler 16, as illustrated in Fig. V.
Extending from the lower end of the boiler 16 to the upper end thereof are spaced boiler flues or tubes 19, which are preferably inclined from their lower ends upwardly and outwardly, as illustrated in Fig. V. Water pipes 20 and .21 extend through the front wall of the furnace and communicate with the boiler 16. 'Leading from the reservoir 18 maybe a steam discharge pipe 22.
In the upper front portion of the wall 10 is an inwardly leading passage 23 which registers with a passage 24 leading through the wall of the boiler 16, as illustrated in Fig. IV, to the open central portion 17 of theboil'er.
In the upper front portion of the furnace is a passage 25 leading laterally, thence downwardly to the passage 23. For closing the outer end of the passage 25 there is provided an upper draft door 26, shown in Fig. I.
Surrounding the upper portion of the boiler 16 is a. baffle plate 27, having in its rear part an opening 28. Spaced below the baffle plate 27 is a second baiile plate 29, which has atits forward end an opening 30. The rear wall of the furnace is provided with an opening 31 leading from the space below the lower bafile plate 29 to the chimney or flue 11.
Suitably located just above the baffle plate 27 are clean-out passages 32 which are closed by doors 33. Just above the baflie plate 29 are similar cleanout passages, at the outer ends of which are similar doors 34. The wall of the furnace is provided with additional passages, similar to the passages 32, leading to the space or compartment below the baffle plate 29 and closed at their outer ends by doors 35 similar to the doors 33 and 34:.
Suitably mounted on the furnace is a pressure motor device 36 for operating a the upper draft door 26. On the lever 37 is slidably mounted the weight as. Connected with the lever arm 37 at a point nearer the pressure motor is another chain 39 connected with the lower draft door 15. It Will be noted that the lever arm 37 is pivoted to a bracket 40 adjacent to the pressure motor device 36, which is connected with the boiler and is responsive to the steam pressure therein, so that when the steam pressure goes down the draft doors are opened, and when the steam pressure is high the draft doors are moved toward closed position for automatically regulating the draft.
In the practical use of my improved furnace it will be understood that the boiler is connected with a suitable source of water supply, and that fuel is supplied to the fire box 12 through the passage 23, the outer end of which is closed by the door 41.
lVhen the draft door 26 is opened, air will pass in the direction indicated by the arrows in Fig. I, through the passage 25 to the passage 23, shown in Fig. lV, leading to the interior compartment 17 of the boiler, and thence downwardly to the upper part of the fuel in the combustion chamber. Under many circumstances the draft door 26 furnishes substantially all the fresh air needed, but where more fresh air is needed it can be furnished through the lower draft door 15 and the passage 42 leading to the fire box.
The smoke and products of combustion and heated air pass upwardly through the tubes 19 to a space i3, and thence around the reservoir 18 to the rear of the furnace, and thence downwardly through the opening 28 to the compartment between the bafile plates, thence around the boiler 16 to the forward portion of the furnace, and thence downwardly through the opening 30 in the lower baffle plate 29, and thence once more around the boiler and through the passage 31 to the chimney 11. The arrangement of the air passages and the passages for smoke and products of combustion is such as to furnish a thorough and complete combustion of fuel in the fire box 12, and to furnish maximum heat to the boiler 15.
It will be noted that the pressure motor device is arranged with the chain 38 secured near the outer end of the lever 37. The said outer end has a greater range of movement than that portion of the lever 37 to which the chain as is secured. The parts are so arranged that the pressure motor normally holds the lever 87 raised, which would hold the upper draft door fully open and the lower draft door partly open. When the pressure motor is operated to lower the lever Copies oi this patent may be obtained for five anemone 37, the lower draft door will close first, so that ordinarily during the operation of the furnace all, or the greater portion, of the fresh air is supplied through the upper draft door. hen the fire is first started, however, and a greater draft is needed, such draft is supplied through both the draft doors.
It will be noticed that the passage 25 is in the wall of the furnace and is spaced from the boiler until it communicates with the passage 2st which leads directly through the boiler.
Some changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of the various parts of my improved furnace without departing from the essential features and purposes of my invention, and it is my intention to cover by the patent to be issued on my present application, any modified forms of structure or use of mechanical equivalents which may be reasonably included within the scope of my claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. .ln a furnace, a fire box, a double walled boiler having a central portion forming a discharge chamber for the fire box, said furnace having a comparatively thick wall, a passage in said wall leading downward from the upper portion thereof, provided with an air inlet and spaced from the boiler, a passage communicating with said aassage and leading directly through the boiler wall substantially on a horizontal line and adapted to supply air to the upper portion of the fuel, and a third passage leading through the wall. of the furnace to the fire box for supplying air to the fire box just above the lower part thereof.
In a furnace, a fire box, a double walled boiler having a central portion forming a discharge chamber for the fire box, said furnace having a comparatively thick wall, a passage in said wall leading downward from the upper portion thereof, provided with an air inlet and spaced from the boiler, a passage communicating with said passage and. leading directly through the boiler wall substantially on a horizontal line and adapted to supply air to the upper portion of the fuel, a third passage leading through the wall. of the furnace to the fire box forsupplying air to the fire box just above the lower part thereof, doors for controlling the admission of air to said first and last described passages, a pressure motor device adapted to simultaneously control said doors, and adapted to open the lower door last and to close it first.
