Be it known that we, 'THoMAs Asnr and AUoUsrUs J. FRAME citizens of the Unlted States, residing at dolumbus, inthe -county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Film-Reels, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in film reels, and has specific reference to a new and improved structure for effecting a substantial connection between the lnner end of the film ribbon and the hub structure of the reel, whereby upon the rotation of the reel, the said film will be wound or unwound with respect to the reel.
Another object of the invention resldes in the provision of an attaching or clamping-structure of the character stated whlch will be, first convenient and simple to operate, second, effective and positlve 1n rte function of clamping the endof the film to the reel, and finally to enable the structure to be readily employed in conjunction with reels of conventional design and to be produced at a relatively low cost.
A further object of the invention resldes in forming the attaching or clamping struc-' ture so that the latter may be readily removed from its operating position in the event of injury,'wear, replacement or dama e thereto.
ith these and other objects in View, as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention accordingly consists in the novel features of construction, combinations of ele-' ments and arrangements of parts, hereinafter to be fully described and to have the scope thereof pointed out in the appended clalms. i

of the invention, the numeral 1 designates a standard conventional form of film reel in its entirety. It is customary in reels of this character, the same is formed to include upon a usual spindle or arbor for the pur-v pose of efiecting the rotatable support of the reel in conjunction with a suitable projecting or motion picture machine.
The present invention concerns itself more particularly with the provision of animproved film clamping structure 6, which operates to removably secure and to friction ally hold the end of a ribbon of film 7 in connection with the hub structure and to permit such film to be wound about the hub structure between the heads 2 of the reel or conversely, to be unwound from the reel. In order to permit this object to be readily accomplished with maximum ease and facility and yet to provide a structure, which will securely hold the end of the film, the structure 6 consists of a pair of leaf springs 8. These springs are formed to include relatively flat horizontally extending ton es 9, which extend in parallelism with the on gitudinal axis of the hub structure, and are formed to include, at certain of the ends thereof, laterally directed vertical portions 10, which extend through slits 11 provided in the heads 2 and lie adjacent to and in arallelism with the outer walls of the heads;
hese vertically extending portions of the sprin s are secured by forming the heads with integral lugs 12, which are ada ted to receive the portions 10, as shown in ig. 1, and prevent displacement of the springs. The opposite ends of the springs project through substantially rectangular openings 13 also formed in the heads 2 contiguous to the outer periphery of the hub structure 3, and the free ends of the springs 8 project through the openings 13 in order that they spaced vertically disposed heads 2, which may be manually engaged by the thumb of the operator. -Therefore, by engagin the free ends of the springs exteriorly 0 the heads 2, the tongues 9 thereof may be elevated against the normal pressures exercised y the springs, thus enabling the end of a reel to be inserted between any one of the tongues 9 and the hub structure. Upon the release of the free end of the particular spring operated, the tongue portion 9 thereof will be pressed downwardly, by the inherent resiliency of the spring, into frictional engagement with the film assoclated therebeneath, and causing the latter to be pressed securely against the outer wall of the hub structure 3 and thus frictionally connected with the reel as a whole. To elfect the release of the film, the free end of the clamping spring is forced outwardly away from the hub structure, this relieves pressure on v, the end of the film and enables the latter through the openings 13 and to be readily withdrawn from connection with the reel.
From the foregoing description, taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, it will be apparent that the present invention provides a clamping appliance of an unusually simple yet effective nature for the particular purpose specified. The construction is such that in the event of injury to any of the springs 8, the injured member may be readily removed by spreading the lugs 12, which permits the injured member to be withdrawn and a new spring substituted therefor. Another important feature in the invention resides in the fact that the spring is normally exteriorly operated. That is, the free ends of the springs project are therefore susceptible to exterior operation. This avoids the necessity of reaching between the restricted space existing between the heads 2, and enables the free end of a film to be attached or released within the short space of time and in a positive and convenient manner.
What is claimed is:
1. In a film supporting reel, a hub including a smooth cylindrical surface having the ends thereof connected with spaced vertically disposed heads, a spring tonguesituated to resiliently engage with the outer periphery of said hub and extending in parallellsm with the longitudinal axis thereof, said spring bein disposed to extend substantially througiiout the length of the hub, an integral outwardly and radially extending finger formed with one en of said tongue, said finger being disposed to enga c with the outer face of one of said hea 5, means provided upon said head for securing said finger in connection therewith, and the other of said heads, contiguous to said hub structure, being provided withan opening through which the free end of said tongue is situated to project, whereby the tongue may be exteriorly manipulated to govern the clamping relationship existing between said tongue and the periphery of the hub.
2. In a film reel, a clamping appliance comprising a hub structure and spaced vertically disposed heads, a spring tongue situated to resiliently engage the outer periphery of said hub structure extending in parallelism with the longitudinal axis thereof and lying between said heads, the free end of said tongue being arranged to project through an opening provided in one of said heads, whereby said tongue may be exteriorly manipulated, and means for connecting the opposite end of said tongue securely to the rim. 3. A film reel clamping appliance comprising a hub structure having spaced verti- 'cally disposed heads secured to the ends thereof, a leaf spring disposed to extend between said heads and normally dis osed in engagement with the outer perip 1ery of the hub structure, a laterally ofi'set end formed upon said spring, lugs carried by one of said heads and arranged to receive the offset portion of said spring, and the free end of said spring being disposed to lie in contiguity with an opening provided in the other of said heads and capable of being exteriorly manipulated to withdraw the spring substantially from engagement with the hub structure.
