IMPROVENIENT IN CAR-AXLE BOXES.
Specifica-tion forming part of Letters Patent No. 139, 322, datedMay 27, 1873; application filed April 25, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY E. MARCHAND, of Pittsburg, in the.county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in J ournal-Box for Railroad Cars, `of which the following is a specification This invention has for its object to furnish a y ljournal-box for railroad cars, which is adapted especially for permitting the ready insertion of the lubricant and interior fittings; and to this end the invention consists in the provision of t a a curved lid or cover, having one or more re- `messes, and combining therewith a supporting :i perspective view of the front portion of a g ournal-boxA with my invention applied thereto. .Fig 2 is a central sectional view of the letame.
The journal-box A vfor receiving the ,axle of l v a car is provided with the usual appendages for supplying the journal with oil, and is in other respects the same as ordinary boxes, except that the shape of the box is varied to conform to the peculiar form of cover employed by me. The cover or lid- B, for closing the opening'or orifice through which the lubricant and interior fittings of the box are inserted, is of a curved or arc shape, as clearly represented in the drawing. Curved grooves or guide-ways C, conforming vto the shape of the cover, are formed at the sides of the box for the reception of the cover, which travels in said grooves. Both ends of Vsaid grooves C l are left open, so as to permit all foreign matters accumulating in the same to be expelled by the movement of the cover, thus never offering any resistance to the proper operation of the same.
The vertical movement of the cover is arrested, whether in an elevated or lowered position, by means oi" a stop-plate, D, which is inserted into a slot formed in the cover from its under side, so as to tightly wedge it in said slot, while not preventing its ready removal for the purpose of enabling the cover to be readily removed. Said iron plate serves also as a thumb or linger piece for operating the cover, as will be obvious. In order to firmly maintain the cover in position, I arrange in proper relation thereto a pin or bolt, E, which is inserted previous to the application of the cover into a seat, F, formed on the face-plate of the journal-box, said pin being provided with a head `or enlarged lower end, G, which will prevent the same from being withdrawn. In the face of the cover are formed two or more recesses or depressions, H, located respectively at the upper and lower ends of the same, and adapted for `the reception of the headed pin or bolt, in order to secure the cover, whether in an elevated or closed posil tion. l
A cover constructed and applied as described a'ords every facility for readily opening and closing the journal-box for the purpose of replenishin g the same with lubricating materials; and also, being simple inconstruction, can be easily manufactured and applied in position. A sliding cover of the description shown possesses also manifold advantages over the hinged or other covers for journal-boxes heretofore constructed, the salient features being the automatic return by its inherent weight to a closed position when the fastening-pin which has held it in an elevated position is retracted from the recess in the cover.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim ist l. The curved lid B of the journal-box, having one or more recesses or cavities, H, in combination with a supporting and locking pin, E, substantially as described, for the purpose specified. t
