VALVE-LIFTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed November 26, 1920. Serial No. 426,469.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that CHARLES T. SrUBBs, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Milwaukee in the county of Milwaukee and State of Visconsin, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Valve-Lifters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to means for removing the valves of a gas engine.
The object of my invention is to provide a device for compressing the springs around the stems of the valves in order that the spring abutments on the stems may be removed, thus permitting the removal of the valve.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the character described that will assist in the ready removal of the valves so that the same can be properly cleaned and ground, and its seat be also cleaned and ground as may be desired, with the least possible effort and expense.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a side view of a valve casing with my device attached thereto, the same being shown in the act of compressing the valve spring.

Fig. 3 is a detail view of the end of the lower arm of the device.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the numeral 1 designates the main frame of the device, which is substantially U-shaped, and having the two arms 2 and 3 and their connecting members 4. The arm 3 is somewhat shorter than the arm 2, the purpose of which will be apparent as the description proceeds, while the arm 2 is braced to the member 1 by the bar 5, which is secured thereto in any convenient manner. The arm 3 has secured at its extremity by the bolts 6, the forked casting 7 adapted to surround the stem of a gas engine valve, such as indicated at 8.
The end of the long arm 2 is given a quarter twist, and the same has pivotally secured thereto, by the bolt 9, a link 10 provided with a plurality of openings 11, in any one of which is pivotally mounted the handoperating lever 12, the connecting end of which is twisted similar to that of the arm 2.
The lever 12 has secured to its under portion, adjacent its pivotal end, by the bolts or rivets 13, a block or strip 14: having in lts face, abutting the lever, a cut-out portion which cooperates with a corresponding cut-out portion on the lever to form the slot 15.. The lever and block 14:, has extending through each and at right angles to the slot 15, an elongated opening 16, through which passes the valve head-engaging stem 17 same being adjustably secured to the lever 12 by means of a bolt 18, which passes through any one of the openings 19 in the valve stem. The valve head-engaging stem 17 passes through a guide opening in the arm 2, which is in alinement with the fork end 7 of the lower arm 3.
The operation of the device is as follows:
When it is desired to remove the valve from its operative position in the engine, the valve cap is first removed, after which the device is placed in position as shown in Fig. 1, with the stem 17 engaging the valve head and the fork 7 surrounding the valve stem 8. The lever 12 is then swung down, during which operation the valve head-engaging stem is pressed upon the valve and lifts the frame 1, whereupon the forked end of the arm 3 compresses the spring, thus permitting the easy removal of the spring abutments. As the frame 1 is lifted, it will be noted that the distances between the pivot of the stem 17 and the lever 12 will increase, and by reason of the slot 15, this is freely permitted.
From the foregoing, it is thought that the construction, operation and many advantages of the herein described invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art, without further description, and it will be understood that various changes in the size, shape, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advan-.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A valve lifter comprising a Ushaped frame, having a valve spring-engaging member carried by one arm of the frame and a lever pivotally connected to the other, a valve head-engaging stem pivotally connected to the lever and adapted to slide longitudinally thereof during the operation of the lever.
2. A valve lifter comprising a U-shaped,
frame, onearm of which is longer than the other, a valve stem-engaging member car.- ried by the shorterarm, and a lever pivotally connected to the long arm, a valve engaging stem pivotally connected to the lever and passing through a hearing in the long arm, said stem adapted to slide longitudinally of the lever vduring the movement thereof. 7
