UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FELIX KOBIS, 0F WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
COMBINATION MONKEY AND PIPE WRENCH.
Application filed April 29,
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FELIX Koers, citizen of Poland, residing at Worcester, in the county of ort-ester and State of Massachusetts,'have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Monkey and Pipe renches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to wrenches of the type provided with an adjustable jaw, and which are commonly referred to as monkey wrenches.
The invention has for an object to provide a novel means whereby the adjustable jaw may be quickly moved to different positions.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the Various novel features of the invention are more. particularly set forth.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a side view, with parts in section, of a wrench constructed according to the invention.
Fig. 2 is an edge View thereof.
Fig. 3 is a detail plan view of the two part nut which detachably engages the threaded shank of the wrench, showing the same in closed position.
Fig. 4. is a similar view but showing the nut in open position.
Fig. 5 is a horizontal section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 6 is a detail side view of the adjustable jaw. 7
Referring now to the drawings my improved wrench comprises a circular shank 10 on one end of which is fixed a handle 11 and on the opposite end a double jaw element 12 comprising a serrated member 12 for use in pipe fitting and a smooth faced member 12 for ordinary use. This shank is slotted as at 13, the slot 13 extending completely through the same from side to side and extending from the handle end to the face of the jaw element 12.
In this slot is slidably engaged an adjustable jaw element 15 having jaw members 15 and 15", complementary to the jaw members 12 and 12, formed thereon, the intermediate portion of this element, which fits in the slot 13, being of less width than the jaw members. It will be understood that Specification of Letters latent.
Patented 0ot.-11, 1921. 1921. Serial No. 465,461.
in assembling the wrench the jaw element 15 is inserted in position in the shank 10 before the handle 11 is secured thereto. As shown at 17 a filler block may be inserted in the end of slot 13.
The slid-able jaw element 15 is adapted for adjustment by a two part nut comprising the semi-circular sections 20 and 21 which meet in the axial line of the shank 10 and are formed on one side with hinge ears 20' and 21 whereby they are hinged together, as at 22. Upon their opposite sides these nut sections have integral extensions 20 and 21 respectively, one of which has a curved finger 23 overlapping the outer face of the other extension and curved concentric to the nut axis.
This finger 23 is formed with a slot 24 which extends from the end thereof inward toward the base and is enlarged at its inner end and adjacent its outer end as at 25 and 26 respectively to form sockets to receive a collar 27 on a pin 28 slidably carried by the extension 21 and extending radially of the nut.
This pin 28 is normally pressed inwardly by a coiled expansion spring 30 located in a recess 31 in the extension 21 and bearing against a flange 32 on the inner end of the pin. Upon the outer end of the pin 28 is a head 33 whereby it may be pulled outwardly.
Carried slidably by the nut section 21, tangential to the nut, and at right angles to the line of split thereof, is a pin 35 which is pressed against the section 20 by a coiled expansion spring 36, this pin serving to open the nut when the locking collar 27 is withdrawn. The spring 36 is located in a recess 37 in the section 21 which is closed by a plug 38,
This two part nut has a swivel engagement with the jaw element 15. This swivel engagement is effected by means of a pair of opposed flanges 410 on the said jaw element which engage. in an annular recess 41 formed partly in each of the nut sections 20, 21 adjacent on end thereof.
It is believed that the manner of use of my improved wrench will be readily understood from the above description. lVhen the nut is closed on the shank it is held against opening by the engagement of collar 27 on pin 28 in the socket 26. As will be apparent, when the nut is rotated, the jaw element 15 will be caused to move along the shank 10.
Tomake a quick adjustment of the jaw element 15 over a considerable distance, the
2. In a wrench, a threaded shank, having a longitudinal slot formed therein and eX- tending completely therethrough from side to side thereof, a movable jaw element slid able in said slot, a nut consisting of a pair of sections hinged to one another, said sections jointly presenting an annular recess, and flange members on said jaw elements engaging freely in said recess. 3. In a wrench, a threaded shank, having a longitudinal slot formed therein and. extending completely therethrough from side to side thereof, a movable jaw velement slidable in said slot, a nut consisting of a pair of sections hinged to one another, said sections jointly presenting an annular recess, and flange members onsaid jaw elements engaging i'reely in said recess, a spring pressed locking pin holding said nut sections closed, and a spring pressed pin urging said sections to open position.
In' testimony whereof I have aflixed my signature. I V
FELIX KOBIS.
