Description

F. s. ANABLE.
STRIP SERVING DEVICE.
APPLICATION FILED AUG-23, 1918- RENEWED MAR. 2, 192!- 1,393,002. Patented Oct. 11, 1921;
I n/venior: I Redemwfi 5. dimbie Z UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK S. ANABLE, OF BROOKLINE, MASSACHUSETTS,
ASSIGNOR TO NATIONAL BINDING MACHINE COMPANY, BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, A CORPORA OF MAINE. I
STRIP-SERVIN G DEVICE.
Original application filed January 6, 19 16, Serial No. 70,554. Divided Renewed March 2, 1921.
23, 1918, Serial No. 251,066.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK S. ANABLn, a citizen of the United States, and a res1- dent of Brookline, in the county of Norfolk This invention relates to devices orapparatus for supplying strips of paper or other suitable material of any desired length to be applied to packages, bottles,
bundles or the like as a wrapping means or as a label or for any other desired purpose, the illustrated embodiment of the invention showing an apparatus provided with means for holding a strip supply previously gummed on one side, such strip being adapted to be withdrawn in selected lengths and further provided with means for moistening the gummed side 01" the strip as the latter is withdrawn. It is apparent that an ungummed strip of paper or the like might be employed, and the moistening device be utilized for applying adhesive to the side of the withdrawn strip.
My invention will be best understood by reference to the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying illustration of one s ecific embodiment thereof, the scope of t e invention being more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawing,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a strip serving apparatus embodying my invention' Fig. 2 is a plan View of a portion of the apparatus shown in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a side elevation, partially 1n vertical section, of a modified form of the apparatus shown in Figs. 1 and 2; and
Fig. 4 is a plan view of a portion of the apparatus shown in Fig. 3.
In the form of my invention herein d1s- Specification of Letters Patent.
series and in alternation,
Patented Oct. 11, 1921.
and this application filed August Serial No. 449,238.
closed, means are provided to prevent contact of the free end of the strip with the moistener when the apparatus is not in use.
The strip support indicated at 1 may be of any suitable character. strip is supported in the form of a roll in a suitable casing upon a base 2, there being suitable tensioning means for the roll, as, for example, a thumb nut 3. Prefer- Preferably the Y ably mounted upon the base 2 is a tank or reservoir 4 having operatively connected thereto any suitable moistening device here- 111 represented as a wick 5 arranged in inverted U shape with the ends thereof depending into the tank, the intermediate portion being suitably disposed to maintain the strip as the latter is drawn across the same. Any suitable strip severing means may be provided, as, for example, the blade 6, herem represented as in advance of, the moistener.
In the figures of the drawing, I have represented means mounted directly upon the moistener to elevate the strip therefrom when the strip is not drawn upon for use. In Figs. 1 and 2, I have represented the moigstener 5 as provided with preferably light and readily yielding spring members 7 which, when the strip is not drawn upon, elevate the latter as represented in Fig. 1, but which when the strip is drawn upon readily yields to permit contact of the strip and moistener. If desired, the spring members 7 may be arranged in several rows or so that all pormoistened. The mounted in any tions of the strip may be spring members 7 may be suitable manner, as in the backing or foun dation of the moistener, as indicated at 8 in Fig. 1. The molstener 5 is represented as provided with out out portions 9 to receive the said spring members when depressed.
In Figs. 3 and 4, I have represented pins 10 normally elevated as by coil springs 11, thereby to separate the strip from the moistener, the springs 11 being of suitable strength to permit the ready depression of the pins 10 when the strip is drawn upon, thereby to permit contact of the strip with the moistener.
The pins 10 and the springs 11 may be mounted in suitable sockets formed in the moistener or its support. Any suitable number of such pins may be provided. Herein a transverse row thereof is represented.
When it is desired to utilize the strip, the free end thereof is grasped by the operator and is drawn into contact with the moistener, the springs 7 or 11 yielding to permit such contact of the strip with the moistener. The strip is then drawn across the moistener until the desired length is drawn from the support 1. After severance of the strip, the springs 7 or 11 become at once effective to separate the strip from the moistener.
Having thus described one illustrative embodiment of my invention, I desire it to be understood that although specific terms are employed, they are used in a generic and descriptive sense and not for purposes of limitation, the scope of the invention being set forth in the following claims.
Claims.
1. A strip serving device comprising a strip support, and a moistener in operative relation thereto, said moistener having spring means to effect separation of the strip and the moistener.
2. A strip serving device comprising a strip support, a moistener in operative relation thereto and stri a severin means in ad-.
vance of the moistener, said moistener having spring means adapted to yield when the strip is drawn across the moistener, but adapted to separate the strip from the moistener after strip severance.
'3. A strip serving device comprising a strip support, a moistener in operative relation thereto, and spring means extending through the moistener to and above the upper surface thereof and adapted to susper surface thereof and adapted to sustain the free end of the strip out of contact with the moistener, but adapted 'to:y1eld When the strip 15 drawn across the moistener, and a severing blade 6 in advance of the moistener.
5. A strip serving device comprising a strip support, a moistener and spring means located at the point of strip moistening to efiect separation of the strip and the moistener.
6. A strip serving device comprising a strip support, a moistener in operative relation thereto and a severing device in operative relation to the moistener, said moistener having spring means to effect separation of the strip and moistener upon strip severance by said severing device. I
7. A strip serving. devicec comprising a strip support, a moistener, a severing device in operative relation to the moistener, and spring means located at the point of strip moistening to effect separation of the strip and moistener upon strip severance.
8. A strip serving device comprising a strip support, a moistener, asevering device in advance ofbut operatively related to the moistener, and spring-means located at the point of strip moistening to effect separa tion of the strip and moistener upon strip severance. V
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name'to this s ecification.
