To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL J. Hunwrrz, a citizen of Lithuania, residing at Youngstown, in the county of Mahoning and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Rim-Tools, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in tools for demountable rims of automobile wheels and has for an objectthe provision of a simple and efficient tool for contracting and expanding a rim during the removal and replacing of a tire.
Another object of the invention is the provision of means for preventing buckling of the tool when the latter is used for expanding' the rim.
Another object is the provision of means for regulating the tool for use with rims of different diameter, the tool being capable of quick and accurate adjustment for this purose.
A further object is the provision of a tool of novel construction, which may be quickly adjusted to a rim or compactly folded, so as to occupy a small space to enableit to be conveniently carried in a car.
Other objects and advantages of the in vention will appear as the following description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings.

Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the reference character 15 indicates generally the tool, while 16 indicates a split'demountable rim.
The tool which is capable of use for contracting the rim to facilitate the removal of a tire and for expanding the rim during the replacing of a tire, comprises an upper head 17, and a lower head 18, the said heads being connected by a screw 19 which is preferably provided with right and left hand threads although the provision of the right and left hand threads is not essential to the operation of the tool. The heads 17 and 18 are thus relatively movable toward and away from each other when the screw 19 is operated and for this purpose one end of the screw is provided with a rectangular (preferably hexagonal) shaped head 20 which is secured to the screw by a pin 21, the said head being separately made to provide for the insertion of the screw through the head 17 The head 17 is provided with radial extensions which terminate in spaced ears 22, while pivoted to these ears are outer links 23 and inner links 24, which are also pivotally connected to the inner ends of plates 25.
The head 18 is also provided with spaced ears 26 which have pivotally secured thereto as shown at 27 one end of a coupling link 28. Pivotally secured to the. plate 25 as shown at 29 are the inner ends of spaced links 30, the outer ends of these links being connected by a pin 31. This pin 31 is adapted for removable engagement within a substantially arcuate slot 32 provided in the coupling link 28, the free end of this last mentioned link being provided with an opening 33 which is adapted to be brought into register with openings formed in the links 30 for the reception of a removable and 6X-:
pansible spring pin 34. By this means the plates 25 in the lower head 18 are detachably connected together. The pin 34 is rovided with a knurled head 35 and a split s ank 36, the latter being formed with a depression 37 so that when the pin is inserted through the openings in the links 30 and 33, it will be contracted when passing through these openings and expanded after its split end is passed through and will be yieldingly held in position. 7
Secured to opposite sides of the plates 25 as shown at 88, are the inner ends of spaced arms 89,'the latter receiving between them the shanks 40 of rim engaging heads 41. Each of these rim engaging heads comprises spaced cross arms 42 which are connected to the shanks 40 as indicated at 43, while pivotally secured between the outer ends of the cross arms are the inner ends of rim engaging hooks 44. The inner ends of these hooks are angular as shown and are secured upon pins 45 carried by the arms 42 and positioned between said arms and the adjacent end of the shank 40 are springs 46. One end of these springs bears against the shank 40, while their opposite ends yieldingly engage the angular surfaces provided upon the inner ends of the hooks 44, the purpose being to urge the outer ends of the said hooks inwardly toward one another so as to hold them in engagement over the edges of the rim 16 in the position shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings.
The parts of the tool are connected by rivets, except the connection between the arms 39 and the shank 40 and the connection between the links 28 and 30 the latter,
.as stated being connected by the removable pin 34. The arms 39. and shanks 40 are connected by means of removable bolts 47, which pass through spaced openings 48 provided in the shanks 40 and also through openings provided in the arms 39. By means of this connection the arms 39 are expansible, that is, the shanks of the rim engaging heads 41 may be readily expanded by positioning the bolts .47 in the proper openings 48, the said head 41 being moved downward a distance of one opening for each increased diameter of the rim. The differences in the width of the rim is compensated for by the pivotal connection be tween the hooks '44 and the cross arms 42. The rim engaging heads 41 are also provided with abutments 48ewhich engage the inner peripheries of the rim when the tool is used for expanding.
One of the novel features of the invention resides in the provision of means for preventing the tool from buckling when the latter is used for expanding a rim and for this purpose, the inner links 24 which connect the upper head 17 with the plate 25 and the links 30 which are detachably connected with the links 28 are each provided with intermeshing teeth 49 and 50 respectively, the said teeth being positioned upon opposite sides of the plate 25. Thus, when the screw 19 is rotated and the heads 17 and 18 moved toward or away from one another the same degree of pivotal movement will be imparted to the outer ends of the links so that the plate 25 will be maintained in a position centrallybetween the upper and lower heads and the abutment 48 will engage the rim 16 at a central point with respect to its cross section. Buckling of the tool will thus be prevented.
By disconnecting the links 28 and 30 the tool may be folded to the position shown in Fig. 2 and in order to permit of the arms of the tool being folded closely inward and to prevent relative rotation of the heads 17 and 18 when the tool is folded, the last mentioned head is provided with notches 51 which receive the said arms. The tool may thus be compactly folded and stored within a convenient place in the car so as to have it at all times handy for use.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claims. y 1
Having described the invention what is claimed is v 1. A rim expanding and contracting tool embodying a pair of relatively movable heads, arms extending radially from said heads and rim engaging elements carried by the outer ends of the arms and means for preventing buckling of the tool and means for connecting the inner ends of theradial arms with the relative movable heads, whereby said arms may be folded in substantially parallel position.
2. A rim expanding and contracting tool embodying a pair of relatively movable heads, arms extending radially from said heads, rim engaging elements carried by the outer ends of the arms, means for preventing buckling of the tool and means including detachable coupling links connecting the inner ends of the arms and heads, whereby said arms may be folded in substantially parallel position.
3. A rim expanding and contracting tool embodying a pair of relatively movable heads, arms extendingradially from said heads, rim engaging elements carried by the outer ends of the arms, means including intermeshing gears for preventing buckling of the tool and means for connecting the inner ends of the radial arms with the relatively movable heads, whereby said arms may be folded in substantially parallel posltion.
4. A rim expanding and contracting .tool embodying a pair of relatively movable heads, arms extending radially from said heads, rim engaging elements carried by the outer ends of the arms, links connecting the arms and heads, intermeshing teeth carried by the links and pivotally secured to the inner ends of the arms for preventing buckling of the tool and means for connecting the inner ends of the radial arms with the relatively movable heads, whereby said arms may be folded in substantially parallel position.
5. A rim expanding and contracting tool embodying a pair of relatively movable heads, arms extending radially from said heads, rim engaging elements carried by the outer ends of the arms, means for preventing buckling of the tool spaced links having one of their ends pivotally secured to the inner ends of the radial arms, a pin connecting the opposite ends of the links, links having one of their ends pivotally connected to the relatively movable heads and provided with an arcuate slot for engagement with the openings or spaces of the links and a removable pin passing through apertures in the said spaced links and the head carried links.
