Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed March 5, 1921. Serial No. 450,045.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CECIL H. BOYULS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment-Formers, of which thefollowing is a specification.

This invention relates to garment formers and has special reference to a garment former for shirt bodies.

One important object of the invention is to improve the general construction of devices of this character.

A second object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved machine of this class having expansion sides for stretching the shirt to be ironed.

A third important object of the invention is toprovide an improved machine of this class having novel operating means for controlling the expansion elements.

A fourth important object of the invention is to provide an improved tail straightening and clamping mechanism in such de- 'vices.

With the above and other objects in View, as will be hereinafter apparent, the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically claimed.

In the accompanying drawings like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and

In the embodiment of the invention herein disclosed there is provided a base 10 from which rises a standard 11, T-shaped in cross section and having its upper end curved forwardly. On this forwardly'inclined portion the head of the T is expanded laterally to provide a main supporting plate 12. Mounted on this plate 12 is a hollow body member 13 having inlet and outlet pipes 14 and 15 respectively, said pipes being for the purpose of conveying steam to and exhausting it from the body in the manner usual in devices of this character. The base 16 of this body fits against the plate 12 and is provided with an opening 17 leading to a channel 18 formed longitudinally of said body in its upper surface and continuing in a somewhat shallower channel 19 likewise formed in the upper surface of the body. On the front of the plate 12 is fdrmed a boss 20 which is alined with the opening 17 and is provided with an opening 21 which extends also through the plate 12 to form a continuation of said opening 17. Through this opening and into the channel 18 extends a screw bar 22 carrying on its outer end a nut 23 providedwith a hand wheel 24. This nut is held from longitudinal movement by a finger plate 25 secured to the top of the standard and projecting into a groove 26 formed on said nut.

To the rear end of the screw bar 22 is connected the forward end of a rack bar 27 meshing with the gears 28 held in pockets 29 in the face of the body 13. These gears are fi-xed on shafts'30 which extend throuv h the body into transverse slots 31, the en sprotation of said hand wheel in the oppositedirection moves the bars inwardly. At each side of the body is a wing member 34 which iscarried on the outer ends of the bars 33 projecting on that side so that the action of the hand wheel as above described collapses these wings on the body or expands them away from said body. or rather storage, of heat the body and wings are made of metal of considerable thickness so that, once these parts are heated, they will retaln the heat for a suflicient time to permit effective working of the device. Attached to the edges of these wing members are thin telescopically arranged cover plates 35 which extend over the body and working mechanism so as to prevent the garments coming in contact therewith.

Projecting from each of the wing members 34 adjacent the front end thereof is a bracket 36 carrying a pair of rods 37 and 38. On these rods is slidably mounted a car- On that part of the carriage sliding on the rod 38 is a rotatable sleeve 40 having a handle 41 on one side and a curved arm 42 on the other side, a presser plate 43 being attached to the free end of said arm to engage against the under side of'the machine and hold the tails of the garment. A spring 44 connects said arm and that part of the carriage which slides on the rod 37 thus urging the presser plate against the under side of the main part of the device.

In operation the clamps are moved up on their rods and the handles moved inward to A shirt, which has been previously dampened and which has its collar band buttoned, is then placed on the form, coverin the same. The clamps, which have been held open by suitable catches (not shown) are now released and the rear tails of the garment gripped by the presser plates against the plates 35, the front tails being held by spring clamps 45 of any desired construction. The operator now manipulates the hand wheel to expand the wings and stretch the garment tightly over the machine. The handles 41 are then pulled for ward to smooth down the tails. "After the garment has been left in this position the necessary time the clamps are released and the form collapsed. The garment is then removed leaving the machine ready for a second garment. It is obvious that this form may be used in place of theform shown in nyoPatent Number 1,357,218, November 2, 1 2

It is obvious that minor changes may be made in the form and construction of the invention without departin from the material principles thereof. t is not, therefore, desired to confine the invention to the exact form herein shown and described but it is wished to include all such as properly come within the scope claimed.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is:

1. In a garment former, a body portion, wings at the sides of the body portion,

means to move said Wings toward and from the body sides, and tail clamps carried by and movable with the wings.

2. In a garment former, a body portion, wings at the sides of the body portion,means to move said wings toward and from the body sides, and tail clamps slidably mounted on the wings for movement longitudinally of saidwings.

3. In a garment former, a body portion,

wings at the sldes of the body portion, means to move said wings toward and from the body sides, tail clamps slidably and rockably mounted on said wings for movement longitudinally of the wings and ineluding presser plates for engaging the garment tails and smoothing them into position.

4. In a garment former, a hollow body, laterally disposed wings atthe-sides of said body and conforming in shape thereto, plates carried by the wings and extending across thebody in overlapping arrangement, and means to expand and collapse the wings.

5. In a arment former, a hollow body, laterally disposed wings at the sides of the body and conforming thereto, plates above and below said body having their outer edges fixed to the wings and their inner portions extending in overlapping relation across said body, and means to expand and collapse the wings.

6. In a garment former, a body, wings disposed at the sides of said body, a rack bar 7 movable longitudinally of the body, wing supporting rack bars movable transversely of the body and carrying the wings on their outer ends,'gear1ng connecting the longitudinally movable and the transversely movable rack bars, and means to move the first able rack bars, means to move the first mentioned rack bar, and plates carriedby the wings and extending over the body in overlapping relation to cover said rack bars and gearing.
