Be it known that I, GEORGE K. THOMPSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car- Trucks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to car trucks and has primarily for an object to equip the truck with compensation mechanism through the medium of which, pressure of the load will be qually distributed-to all parts of the rolling stock, thereby preventing undue wear of the latter at any one point.
A coordinate object is to maintain the equilibrium of the car body under all conditions, and to provide such means aswill insure return of the body to a normal position if per chance the equilibrium of the body should, at any time be disturbed.
Other and more specific objects of the invention will be apparent from the following description and accompanying drawings.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a fragmentary transverse sectional view of a car truck constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of the same.

In the drawings in order to illustrate the application of my invention a portion of a car body frame, as indicated at 1, is provided and is equipped approximately midway its lateral margin with a king bolt 2, which may be of the usual or any desired configuration. A truck frame 3 is arranged in the usual manner, subjacent the body frame 1 and is provided with a central hearing 4 which corresponds with the king bolt 2 and is engaged with the latter.

A substantially Y-shaped. compression link 11 is associated with the block 9, the vertex of said link being rounded and being mounted in a corresponding opening 12 in said block, the opening flaring outwardly toward its lower end in order to permit an appreciable lateral movement of the link. Springs 13 are engaged with the opposite sides of said ears 7, whereby shock will be absorbed from the bearing 8 and the latter will be returned to its normal position, after having been actuated by the exertion of undue pressure on the block 9.
Cantalivers 14 are provided, the inner end of each of which is bifurcated, and the branches of the bifurcation of one of the levers being pivoted to and snugly engaged with the opposite faces of one end of a link 15. the branches of the bifurcation of the other lever being pivoted to the opposite end of the link 15, but being spaced from the opposite faces of the latter by washers 16 or the like. It will therefore be noted that the bifurcated ends of said cantalivers are permitted to swing one within the other. Each cantaliver 14 is fulcrumed as indicated at 17 in suitable housings 18, the latter depending from the truck frame 3. The outer terminals of the cantalivers are engaged with substantially semi-elliptical equalizing members 19. A recess is formed approximately midway the ends of the equalizing members 19 and has mounted therein the lower end of the compression link 11. Said lower end of the compression link is bifurcated and has the branches of the bifurcation straddled across the equalizing member 19 in order to prevent lateral displacement of said link. Elastic elements generally designated 20 are mounted in suitable brackets 21 in the truck frame 3, each of said elements in this instance comprising a plurality of elliptical springs. Binders 21 are secured to said bracket and have their terminals rigidly engaged with transoms 21 on the truck frame;
the elliptical springs are arranged in superposed relation to the cantalivers 14, and are preferably arranged at a point approximately midway between the inner terminals of the cantalivers and the fulcrum points of,
the latter. In this way downward pressure on the outer terminals of the cantalivers caused by the load on side bearings 9, will be resisted by the elliptical springs 20. Even if pressure is exerted on only one of the cantalivers, the thrust will be equally distributed to both series of springs at that point on the truck frame.
I claim I 1. In combination with a car body, equipped with a pending king bolt, and a truck, cantalivers pivotally connected at their inner ends and pivotallyconnected to the truck and having their outer ends in connection with the car body, resilient means arranged between said cantalivers and car body, intermediate said pivot points, and springs interposed between said resilient means and king bolt to absorb shock of lateral thrust from the car body.
2. A car truck including cantalivers carried by the truck and in connection with the car to equally distribute the pressure of the car to the truck, and means cooperable with intermediate portions of said levers to ab sorb shock from the car.
3. In combination with a car body and truck, mechanism carried by the truck to equally distribute pressure to the latter, portions of said mechanism being movable laterally under pressure of the car body, and means in the path of said laterally movable portions to absorb shock from the mechanlsm.
4: In combination with a car body and.
truck, cantalivers fulcrumed in the truck and having their free terminals in connection with the frame of the car body, means pivotally connecting the inner ends of said levers, and means mounted between the fulcrum points and pivoted inner ends of the levers for absorbing shock from the car body.
5. In combination with a car body and truck, cantalivers fulcrumed in the truck, having their outer ends engaged with the car body and their inner ends pivotally connected, and springs arranged in the path of movement of said cantalivers, between the fulcrum points and pivoted inner ends of the latter, to absorb shockfrom the car body.
