SEMIDIESEL OIL-ENGINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 4,1921.
oil; the starting being effected by means of petroleum.
In order to get semi-Diesel'engines to run satisfactorily under any. load; it is necessary to add igniting oil tothe coal oil.
The present invention has for its object to provide a combination of means whereby semi-Diesel engines can be started, and made to run idle, and at their various speeds exclusively by means of cgal oil without the addition of any other fuel.
According to this invention the engine cylinder (as illustrated in vertical section in Figure 1 of the accompanying drawings) comprises a cylinder head chamber B, not cooled, communicating with the cylinder proper A by means of a narrow passage 7), at a place where the piston never comes.
-This cylinder head chamber B is followed by an ignition chamber C with which it is in communication by means of a passage 0 of smaller diameter than the passage b. This construction allows of almost wholly avoidingthe scavenging of the cylinder head chamber, and of retaining in the latter a portion of the exhaust gases at a very high temperature.
This means is combined with the use of an injecting twyer D supplying a jet whose inclination, shape and location must be so chosen as to assure that the point (Z of axial impact, as also the spread of the jet shall be such that the injected liquid will always be confined in the interior of the top of the cylinder head chamber B.
The injection of the fuel is effected in two stages :A first portion of the liquid fuel of relatively small amount, is injected at the bottom dead center of the piston stroke or in the vicinity of this dead center. Since only a small quantity of liquid fuel is admitted in this manner, the said liquid fuel will be vaporized before coming into contact with the walls of the cylinder head chamber 13, and therefore will not cool the chamber B which would otherwise occur if the whole of the required fuel were injected at once in the usual way.
The liquid fuel thus injected is ignited however just before the piston reaches its top dead center, by the combined action of the temperature of the cylinder head chamber and of the compression, and it is this first portion of the fuel admitted in this manner that assures the ignition of the main quantity of the liquid fuel which latter is injected at the moment when the piston has reached its top dead center or a few degrees before the piston does reach this dead center.
This distribution may be effected by any suitable mechanism.
For instance, as illustrated diagram-' matically in Fig. 2, there may be mounted on a shaft E driven from the engine shaft, a cam F having two pro minences f, f arranged at diametrically opposite points. These prominences, f, 7, which have suitable shapes, act at the desired time u on a roller 7 carried by the arm Gr, of a bel crank lever G -G fulcrumed at a fixed point 9 and also carrying at the apex of its angle a roller G by means of which it acts upon the freeendof the piston rod H of the injecting pump.
The shapes of the prominences f and f are suitably designed for injecting the desired relative quantities of liquid fuel, at
the moments of arrival ofthe piston at its lower dead center and upper dead center respectively. The greater part of the liquid fuel is injected by the action of the operating prominence f at the moment the piston arrives at its upper dead' center; this injection being effected at a high speed.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be per-. formed, I declare that what I claim is:
In an internal combustion engine of the Diesel type. the combination of an engine cylinder having a non-cooled cylinder head narrow passage, an lgnition chamber open to said cylinder head chamber through a passage of smaller cross-section than said first named passage. means for injecting chamber open to said-cylinder through a means controlling said of unequal amounts,"
liquid fuel at such inclination and thickness of jet as will confine the injected liquid in the interior of the upper portion of said cylinder head chamber, fuel-distributing injecting means whereby fuel is injected in two stages and the first of which stages taking place about the lower dead center of the piston stroke to introduce the smaller ignitingcharge to be ignited by accumulated heat in said ignition chamber and the second of which taking place at or near the upper dead center of the piston stroke to introduce the working charge to be ignited by said ignition charge.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification.
JEAN BAPTISTE COTTARD.
