LESLIE A. 1111114, OF DALLAS, TEXAS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
IatentedOct. 4, 1921.
Application filed December 9, 1920. Serial No. 429,387.
To all whom *Ztma concern:
Be it known that I, Lnsmn A. HILL, a citizen of the United States, (residing at Dallas, in the county of Dallas and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Arrangement and Construction of Self-Service-Store Fixtures, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in store furniture or fixtures and in such connection it relates more'particularly to the arrangement and construction of such furniture or fixtures as applied to a self-service store.
The principal object of the invention is to provide an arrangement of shelving insections with shelving being so arranged and constructed that all available space is economically utilized and at the same time permit the goods displayed on the shelves being visible from a designated point in the store so as to avoid the surreptitious removal of any goods, the shelving and fixtures being also so arranged as to provide free access to the goods and ample room for customers in their entrance, purchasing and exit to and from the store. The shelving and counters, etc., also present a very uni ue and neat appearance.
Other minor objects and advantages will become apparent as the description of the invention progresses, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of the inside of a self-service store wherein the shelves, etc., embodying the invention are arranged.
Fig. 2 is an elevational view of one of the units of the triangular-sha ed shelving, the view taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 3, Fig. 3 being a top or plan view of said unit.
ig. 4 is a front elevational view of a section of the shelving representing several of the units in position and illustrating also a basket rail, the view taken on line 4-4,
Fig. 1.
ig. 5 is a vertical sectional view of the basket rail, taken on line 5-5, Fig. 4, and
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary perspective view of. the shelving.
Referring more in detail to the drawings, 1 represents the side walls of a building having a main entrance 2. The shelving is built up in the triangular units 3-3 arranged adjacent the side walls 1-1.
Each of the units 3-3 is of triangular other parts of store furniture, the v formation as depicted in Fig. 3, the member 4 representing the back disposed adjacent the walls 1-1, and connected to the back member l are the pieces 5-5 constituting the front faces of the shelving frame. Uprights 6-6 are connected to the back members 4; and front pieces 5-5 to support the shelves 7-7. The shelves 7-7 are adjustably arranged in the shelving frame and the shelves 8-8 are stationary. 9 represents a bracing strip.
The units are thus connected together and beginning at the railing 10 ext-end along the side walls 1-1 to within a short distance of the end of the store, a space 11 being left for the storage of surplus stock. The rear end of each row of shelves has a corner unit 12 of smaller dimensions than the regular units 3-3 and a similar end unit 13. Passageways l2 between the backs of the units and side Walls give access to the shelves for the purpose'of replenishing the stock.
In the center of'the floor space and in front of each row of shelves is a railing 14 upon which suitable receptacles 15 carrying the customers goods may be placed and moved along as the goods are selected. The railing 14 is curved around upon itself as illustrated in Fig. 1, at the lower end, and in the angle thus formed is arranged a double unit 16. Between the railings 14 is a fruit and vegetable stand 17.
A cashiers counter is located at the head or entrance of the floor space, the counter being of substantially triangular formation and projecting outwardly into the store into a point 18 and having the laterals or wings 19-19. The cashier or clerk may thus occupy the space 20 and be able to observe from this position all the shelving on each side of the store Double inwardly swinging entrance gates 21 are located between the cashiers counter and railing 10 and similar outwardly swinging 0r exit gates 21 are arranged on the opposite side of the counter, the gates adapted to move inward and outward in the direction of the arrows and illustrating in connection with the arrows at other points the direction which customers move in and out of the store.
Between the smaller units 13-13 is arranged a refrigerator 22 and doors or gates 23 are provided for passage of clerks to the store room 11. 24 represents a cash register and an adding machine is shown at 25.
I do not confine myself to any particular means of constructing or connecting together the units or counter, &c... as various minor changes in details may be made and the spirit and principle of the invention yet maintained.
What- I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. The arrangement and construction of fixtures for 11 self-service store as described which consists of 11 plurality of triangular shaped shelving on each side and at one-end of 1i building. a passageway between the back faces of the shelving and the store building walls. a storage space beyond one end of the shelving. a substantially V-shaped counter at the front of the store and between the shelving. a centrally inclosed space in the counter, railings fora sliding receptacle. and 11 double triangular unit at each end of the receptacle 'ailings. said railings spaced apart and an entrance at their lower ends between the double triangular units, an entrance and an exit at opposite sides of the V-shaped counter and private passagewaysleading into the storage space.
2. The arrangement and construction of fixtures for a self-service store as described which consists of a plurality of triangular shaped shelving 011 each side 11nd at one end of a building, a passageway between the back faces of the shelving and-the store building walls, a storage space beyond one end of the shelving, a substantially V-shaped counter at the front of the store and between the shelving, a centrally inclosed space in the counter, railings for a sliding receptacle, and a double triangular unit at one end of each of the railings, all of' said triangular shaped shelving units having two faces extended out ard onto the floor space and forming a V and providing a V-shaped space between the adjacent faces of the shelf units, said railings spaced apart and an entrance at their lower ends between the double trian gular units, an entrance and an exit at opposite sides'of the V-shaped counter and private passageways leading into the storage space.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
