HERBERT n. noosn, on. tIncoLnfNEBnAsxm CLAMIING DEVICE non SHOE-HEELS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatI, HERBERT H. RoosA, of Lincoln, in the county of Lancaster and State of Vebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in' Clamping Devices for Shoe-Heels; and I do hereby r the reference-numerals marked thereon.
declare the-followingto be'a full, clear,and
exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,
forming a part of this specification, and to My invention has for its purpose to providev animproved clamping device, to be used in gluing or cementing high heels, French heels, or any wooden heels to boots,
shoes, slippers or pumps.
' of the heel and against the heel seat, so as p 1 vide a structure with a, minimum number of parts, simplifying. the operation and reduc- An especial object of my improvement is to afford a clamping device so constructed that the pressure or clamping action 'will be distributed evenly over the entire bottom to avoid concentration of the clampingaction at one portion of the edge of the heel, such as occurs if the ordinary type of parallel jaw clamp is employed. a
A further purpose of my improvement is to provide a device readily adaptable to heels of different sizes, such a manner that the clamp will accommodate itself to heels of different pitch, andalso to affordto the operator unobstructed view ofthe base of the heel, and the heel seat,and ample space to beat up and mold the heelaseat. 1
Still an additional object, is to afford a portable device such thatthe shoe can read ily be subjected to various finishing operations with the heel clamped inposition, thus permitting the cement or glueto set while vother work is being performed upon the shoe.
Another object of the invention .is'to pro- "ng the manufacturing cost, andin arranging the parts so as not to interfere with or damage the shoe upper, or crush or deface the heel whilethe parts are in clamped relation. To these and other ends the invention consists in certain improvements and combinations of parts" all as will be hereinafter more fully described, the'novel featuresibeingpointed out in the claims .at'the lend of the specification;
In the drawings: a Figure 1 is a side elevation of a device constructed in accordance with thezinvention and illustrating in dotted lines aposijusted away from the vertical;
"Specification of Letters Patent. 7 PatentedOct, 4 1921, Application filed September 27,1917. serial No. 193,419.
for portable use, and showing in dotted lines the position of the clamp carrier when ad- Fig. (dis a frontelevation;
Fig. 7 is a plan ,view of the last support illustrated in F -6, with the 'other parts removed, and V Fig.8 is a front elevation, partially brol'renfaway, showing the portable clamping device arranged .upon'a last engaging in. V
Similar,reference: numerals in the several figures indicate the same parts.
There are various ways in which the invention may be carried out practically, and for the purpose of this application I have illustrated a preferred way of-its accom i plishment byway of example, and it will be understood that it is not intended to confinev the invention to-the particular structure shown. Referring to Figs. 1 to i, 1 designates a base whichin this instance constitutes the last support and is provided with a last engaging pin 2 held in place by a ,set screw 5,.and arranged tohold a last with a shoe upper thereon, as usual in. this art.
Pivotally mountedinpon the last support is aLcla-mp carrier, preferably embodying guide rods 3 having inturned lower extremities which. engage-bearings 4 in the .last support carrier upon theguide rods. The clamp '6 1. The guide rods 3- are connected at their i upper ends by a Cross head 8 which is. retai-ned in fixed relation to the guide rods, by
enlargements 10 1112011 the latter, which arel is provided with a clamping surface 16 i.
which isinclined with reference to aplane perpendicular to the generalv direction of clamping action. The inclined clamping surface 16fpreferably extends fromone end ofthe clamp to the other, and isarranged so as to conform to the inclination of the bottom of a French heel or high heel such as used on ladies shoes, with reference to' the heel seat.
As the, heels become larger and lower, the
inclination of the bottom of the heel becomes less, or in other words, the bottom of'the heel becomes more nearly parallel to the heel seat, and this is provided" for in the present structure by the pivoting of the clamp carrier which can be swung around I the last support, as indicated by dotted lines a in Fig. 1.
As the clamp is thus moved laterally, its inclined clamping surface 11 becomes more nearly horizontal, thus conforming to the bottom of a heel which is larger or lessinclined than the extreme French heel. i
The clamping surface 16 terminates in a shoulder 17, which engages the rear edge of the heel and assists in positioning the parts; 7
When in clamped position, the surface 16 engagesover substantially the entire bottom of the heel, and the pressure is thus distributed throughout the heel. This aifords'a'n even engagement between the heel and its seat, thus more securely attaching the parts,
and it also obviates the danger of creasing or defacing the covering of the heel or otherwise damaging the heel, as when the pressure is appliediat its one edge only, causing greater compression through one portion of the heel than another. 7 The clamp is actuated by a clamping screw 7, which is threaded in an opening 12 of the cross head 8, and is-provided with an operating handle 9. The operation will be readily understood and consists in positioning a last, with a shoe upper and sole thereon, upon the last engaging pin 2, and after the heel is supplied with glue or eement and properly positioned upon the shoe seat, the
' clamp 6 is brought down upon-the bottom 0f'the heel.' The clamp carrier is adjusted aboutits pivotal axis until the clamping surface correctly conforms to the inclination of the bottom of the heel,'and the clamping screw 7 is then tigh In some cases it is quite desirable to perform other work on theshoe'with the heel clamped thereon, and for this purpose I pro-.
vide'the mechanism shown in Figs.5 to. 8 inclusive. In this form,- instead of using a large base, such as shown 1n Figs. '1 and 2 for the last support, I employ a last support 13 upon which the guide rods 8 of the clamp carr er are'pivoted in sockets 14. 'The last support 13 is provided with a central opening 15 to temporarily receive a' last"pin. 2,
while the heel is being clamped to theshoe'.
The operation and remaining parts are the I same as alreadydesoribed, and afterthe heel isclamped, the entire structurev can be reinoved'from the last pin 2. This arrangement affords a light,"p ortable device that can be readily carried to permit other finishing operations upon the shoe while the glue under the heel is hardening. r V v The last support 13 is cut away slightly .uponits upper surface at opposite sides of Y the center part, as indicated atfl-S The purpose of this is to provide a slight clear ance between 'the last and the end portions 1. Ina clamping device for shoe heels, the i combination. witha last su port, of a'clamp carrier pivotally 'mounte with reference to the last support to swing about the same and including "oppositely arranged guide rods, and a-clamp having openings receiving said guide rods" and ,mova'blethereon toward and from thelast support andhaving a clamping surface inclined with refer- I once to a plane perpendicular to the general direction of clamping action/so as to con-.-
