HARVEY'H.- nIcK, or LINCOLN, ILLINOIS.
n Bonnie-CLEANER.
To all whom it 07mg/ cof/meme.' i
Be it 'known that I,`HARviiY H. Dion, a
y citizenof thev United States, lresiding at Lincoln, in the county ofkLogan and State of Illinois, have invented aA certainnewand useful Improvement in oilereCleaners, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a vpart of this specification.
My invention relates to infr boilers.
LThe principal devices' for cleanobject ofthe invention is to provide a lpractical and efficient device for cleaning boilers and the like.
Another object `of the invention is to arrange forr the skimming or removal of the scum and otherV refuse matter'at or near the surface of the water, and also to remove the sediment settling in the water below the surface, by one and the same device.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide a device which shall be simple and inexpensive to construct and highly efficient and satisfactory in operation.
rIn the accompanying drawings Figure l is a vertical longitudinal section of aboiler provided with a cleaning device embodying my invention;
Fig'. Q'is a plan view on an enlarged scale of aportion of Fig. l, said Fig. 2 being taken on line 2-2 in Fig. l; Y
` Fig. 3 isa vertical section of a part ofthe device taken on line 3-3 in Fig. 4:; and n Fig. 4 is a section taken on line 4-4 in Fig. 3,.s"howing the boiler also.'
' Referring to the drawings,-I show in Fig. 1 a boiler 1 which 'isan ordinary type of boiler well. lknown on the market, although of course the device can b e appliedto boil ers of various makes. The cleaning device embodying my invention is shown at 2 and is preferably located about the central portion ofthe boiler. This cleaning device is Vin the form of a tank or vat, preferably of substantially V-shaped cross section, and of much greater 'length than breadth. It is suspended from the top of the boiler by means of links 3', turnbuckles 4 and bolts 5 passing through the wall of the boiler. This tank or receptacle 2 is preferably made of two end portions or parts 2, and 2c, and a central portion 2l. It is formed by a series of V-shaped transverse arranged at intervals and serving as sup- Specification ofk Letters Patent.

ports, vthe ribs@ and Qbeing yat the ends and 7 and 8 between the ends, forming the ends of the middle portion 2b. Sheet metal sides 'l0 and ll are secured to the outer edges ofl these framesG, 7., 8 and 9. Sheet metal ends l2 and 1 3 are secured to the endniost frames G and 9. The portions of the sides l0 and Y l1 between the frames 6 and "T, and 8 and9,
respectively, are provided with apertures or openings which may be conveniently formed by punching out portions of the sheetinetal forming said sides, such punched out poi1` tions being shown at la and l5. The ends l2 and 13 are also provided with apertures or openings conveniently formed by punched out portions 16 and 17. The portions of the sides 10 and 1l between the frames 7.and`v8, are preferably not provided with side apertures but with solid or closed, as shown in Figs. land 2. Thus the tank or vat-like structure is provided with a `series of horizontally extending side and end openings, which are arranged at different horizontal levels. The punched out portions lll, l5, 16 and 17'form projections which extend to the side andend intake openings and which are inclined toward the same so that the movement of the water (in. theboiler and the slight washing around of the same dueto variations in water level, will cause scum and refuse matter to be caught on said proiecting members and to be washed into the interiorof the tank. A pipe 20 is Xtended along the bottom of the device, in effect forming the bottom of the same, said pipe being substantially the length ofr saidy tank or vat.` rllhis pipe 2O is f which may be on or near the surface of the water. Preferably the member 23 has a closed top 24 and is provided with side openings 25 affording communication with the interior. Said member 23 is mounted on the pipe 26 which extends down to and is secured to the pipe 20. Thus the scum or other refuse which comes from the surface of the water and enters the member 23 will pass down the pipe 26 and into be carried ofi with the sediment which enters said pipe 20 through the slots 21.
A discharge pipe 27 entends upwardly from the intake pipe 20, preferably near the middle of the same, and is secured to the top of the boiler l by means .of a coupling A discharge valve 29 in said pipe 27 controls the discharge of matter from the pipe 20.
An inlet pipe 30 preferably extends down into the boiler through the top thereof and is desirably provided at its lower end with an upturned member 3l so that water entering through the pipe 30 will not be directed downwardly, but instead will be directed upwardly and therefore will not stir up the sediment at the bottom of the cleaning device. An intake Y32 is also preferably provided, the same having inlet apertures 33 in its lower surface and being connected with the pipe 2OV by a small pipe 34e. By having the apertures 33 in the under side of the member 32, no sedimentwill drop into said apertures 33.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the water in the boiler will enter the device through its side and end openings, being always able to enter same even though the height of water in the boiler may vary, be-v cause of said openings being atl different heights. The scum and other refuse mat ter resting on or near the surface of the water will accumulate within the device 2 because the water will be comparatively quiet from the boiling, and the sediment will also collect there to a large extent. The scum and other light refuse matters will enter the apertures in the funnelshaped member 23 and bey carried into theV pipe 20. The sediment will descend and enter apertures 2i in pipe 20. When the discharge valve 29 is opened all these matters will be discharged through the outlet pipe 2?, thereby ridding the boiler of these objectionable elements which have very disastrous results in boilers as is well known.
By the turnbuckle arrangement including the pipe 2O andy sections which 'extend down the parts 3, 4 and 5, the devicevmay be dis-` connected and moved to one side or the,
other with easel.,- This will permit complete removal. .of thev cleaner' or partial removal Hof the same for convenience of access andv examination. ,y p The device 1s exceedinglynsimple and therefore inexpensive. Moving parts, floats and other objectionable features are avoided.r
, It will be understoodthat changes andA modifications may be made'without departing from the spirit of the invention.
