TIMER FOR INTERNALCOMBUSTION ENGINES.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JEROME F. SHERBINO, a citizen of the United States, residin at ountain Lakes, county of Morris, and tate of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Timers for Internal-Combustion Engines, of which the following is a specification.
his invention relates to timers for internal combustion engines, being intended more particularly for use on multi-cylinder engines. r
The invention has for an object to provide a timer characterized by extreme simplicity of construction and efliciency of-operation, and by an arrangement of parts acting to protect the electrical conductors and contact members. I
For further comprehension of the invention and of the object and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claim in which the various novel features of the invention are' more particularly set forth.
-Figure l of the drawings is .a part side elevation and part axial section of a timer constructed according to my invent-ion.
Fig. 2 is a. horizontal section on the line 2-2 of Fig. l.
The contact members of my improved timer are inclosed within a cylindrical casing 1 which is open at one end and is closed at its opposite end by an integral cap por tion 2 of flattened conical form. As shown in Fig. 1 the outer conical surface of the cap forms a greater angle with the axis of the cap, than the inner conical surface, so that the conical wall of this cap' tapers in thick ness from bottom to top, being of much greater thickness at the bottom than the cylindrical wall 1, thus providing an annular surface 3 in a axis of the casing.
This surface provides a runway for the rotating contact of the timer, which contact Specification of Letters Patent.
exceedingly simple construction and plane transverse to the Patented Sept. 27, 1921.
Application filed October 15, 1919. Serial No. 330,818.
. here comprises a stud 4 slidable in a socket 5 formed 1n a head 6 on the end of an arm 7 secured by any suitable means to the usual shaft 8, a spring 9 in the socket 5 pressing the stud outward.
Carried by the cap portion 2 are a series of fixed contacts each consisting of a flat segmental plate 10 set into the face 3 flush therewith and evenly spaced therearound.
hese plates are formed with studs 11 which project through the cap 2 parallel to the axis thereof and terminate in screws 12 providing binding posts.
As will be understood the casing is formed of insulating material and in constructing the same I prefer to mold the fixed contacts therein. For adjustment of the casing in the usual manner to change the timing I secure a bracket 13 by screws 14 to the outside of the. casing, this bracket. having a sleeve 15 adapted to receive the usual adjustmg means.
As will be apparent I have provided an arready leading for proper inclosing of member.
rangement which rovides for of the wires and the moving contact I claim- A timer comprising a conical cap having conical inner and outer surfaces, the said outer surface forming a greater angle with the axis of the cap than said inner surface,
cap a thickness decreasing gradually toward the apex of the cap, the base of the cap having an internal surface transverse to said axis and contact members at said surface, and a casing extending from the outer portion of said base in the direction opposite to the cap, at a greater distance from the axis than said contact members.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature.
J EROME F. SHERBINO.
