ASH-PIT FOR GAS-PRODUCERS EIOUNTED 0N To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, Vro'ron LnoN CAzEs, citizen of the Republic of France, residing at 128 Rue Perronet, Neuilly-sur-Seine, Seine, in the Republic of France, have invented new and useful Improvements in Ash-Pits for Gas-Producers Mounted on Automobiles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved arrangement of ash pit for gas producers used on automobiles which is of a very simple construction and by means of which the economical production of a gas of a very uniform and homogeneous character is facilitated.
In the annexed drawings, given by way Figure l is a vertical section through an ash pit constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section at right angles to'Fig. 1 of a gas producer provided with.
the improved ash pit. 7
Referring to the drawing, A denotes the outer cylindrical wall of the ash pit and B the inner truncated conical wall. The chamber C between said walls forms a which is fed from the overflow of the upper boiler 2 through a tube. T. The inner wall is provided with a number of holes 0 through which the mixture of air and steam enters the body of the gas producer 3, said air and steam passing from the upper boiler 2 to the chamber C through a pipe 4. Air is sucked in at 5 into the upper space of boiler 2 and sweeps over the water level in the same whereby it is mixed with a certain amount of steam. R is a discharge siphon which prevents the ash pit from flooding in case of the water being fed in excess owing to a failure of the automatic water distributer which feeds the boiler to work properly. M, M are two doors for inspection purposes. The door M is also used for firing and the door Mr is used for clearing out the ash pit. Both doors may be slightly opened for the purpose of' admitting a lim ited amount of outer air into the gas producer and oausingfthe same to work at a reduced rate when the engine is stopped so as to be able to work again at a normal rate very rapidly.
It will be understood that by means of the of ash pit above described, the air and steam fed into the ash pit by the pipe 4 may be heated by the waste Specification of Letters Patent.

heat. from the ashes. An additional amount of steamresulting from the vaporization of the water in the annular chamber C is carried at the same time therewith into the gas producer. Moreover, the "injection of the mixture of air and steam is thus efiected through the series of holes 0 so that the formation of straight passages through the fuel is prevented; the mixture is properly distributed and passes properly through the whole incandescent layer so that a gas of a very uniform and homogeneous character is produced.
Having now described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. An ash pit for gas producers comprising in combination an outer wall, an inner wall, and horizontal walls arranged below a gas producer and forming an outer annular chamber and a central chamber under the said gas producer, the central chamber being in open communication with the gas producer, means for feeding water to said annular chamber, means for automatically preventing the said chamber from flooding, means for feeding a mixture of air and steam to the said annular chamber, the inner wall being provided with holes affording communication between the upper part of the annular chamber and the upper part of the central chamber.
said gas producer chamber, the central chiinber being in open communication with the gas producer, means for feeding water to said annular chamber, means for automatically preventing the said chamber from flooding, holes in the inner wall affording communication between the upper part of the annular chamber and theupper part of thecentral chamber, a door in said annular wall opening into the lower part of the gas producer and a door in said outer wall opening into the lower part of the central chamber, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
3. An ash pit for gas producers mounted on automobiles, comprising in combination. an outer wall, an inner wall and horizotal gas producers compris- 1 walls arranged below a gas producer and forming an outer annular chamber and a central chamber under the said gas producer, the central chamber being in open communication with the gas producer, a water pipe connecting the water space of a boiler upon the gas producer with the lower part of said annular chamber means for automatically preventing the said annular chamber from flooding and a pipe connecting an air and steam space in the boiler with theupper part of said annular chamber, the inner wall being provided with holes affording a communication between the upper part of the annular chamber and the upper part of the central chamber.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
VICTOR LEON CAZES.
