Description

E. A. HOWITT. inking Attachments for Chromatic Printing. No, 139,155. PatentedMay 20,1873.
AM. P110 m-umosRAPu/c 00 iv. x (warm/v53 macssag) UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD A. HOWITT, OF WHITEWATEB, WISCONSIN.
IMPROVEMENT IN INKING ATTACHMENTS FOR CHROMATIC PRINTING.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 139,155, dated May 20, 1873 application filed April 1, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, E. A. Howrrr, of White- Water, in the county of Walworth and State of Wisconsin, haveinvented certain Improvements in Inking Devices for Chromatic Print- .ing, of which the following is a specification:
This invention relates to an ink-distributing device for chromatic printing, as is more fully hereinafter set forth.
In the drawing Figure 1. is a top "iew, and Fig. 2 a longitudinal vertical section.
A represents the oscillating ink-distributing I table of a common Gordon or Liberty press,
. simple set-screw at its rear end, bearing against the frame as best seen in Fig. 2; or it may be moved laterally thereon when a blendin g of its color with that of the next one is desired. The fountains are removable from the straps so that the color of a given strap may be changed without removing it from the frame. They may be secured by simple screws, or by dovetailed or similar holders. The fountains partially encircle the fountain-roller, so that, when their straps are moved, they may preserve close contact with said roller. Upon the end of the fountain-roller I provide a cam which bears upon a suitable projection fixed to the stationary frame of the press, whichis actuated in the present instance, by a ratchet and paw], deriving movement from the workin g parts of the press, by which the roller is intermittently rotated to supplyink, and the frame intermittently reciprocated to present a constantly changing ink-distributing surface for the type-rollers.
It is obvious that any other arrangement of the devices for reciprocratin g the frame may be employed without departing from the spirit of my invention, which is to accomplish a reciprocating movement of the ink-distributin g straps at each reciprocation of the typerollers over them.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A chromatic inking device, consisting of a series of ink-distributin g straps, fountains, and ink roller, so combined with a printing press as to have a lateral reciprocating movement, as described.
2. In combination with the series of inkdistributing straps, the series of detachable ink-fountains, as described.
3. The ink-distributing straps and fountains, so constructed as to be independently adjustable, laterally, upon the frame, as described.
E. A. HOWITT.
