PATENT OFFICE.'
KNAPP, l' MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA.
AUTOMOBILE-LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 20, 1921.
Appliation led October 18, 1919.. Serial No. 332,080.
'. To all lwhom. it may concern:
Be it known that I, 'CHARLES KNArP, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Minneapolis in the county of Hennepin and State of 'nnesota, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in an Automobile-Lock, of whic the following is a s eciiication.
ne object of lmy invention is to provide in an automobile llock means for locking directly onto the fly wheel of the engine.
Another object is to provide means for making the' lock effective should the lock bolt be brought onto the locking meansl without being iii perfect alinement therewith.
Another object is to provide improved means for holding the lock bolt into locked relation with its locking means. t
With these and incidental objects in view, the invention consists ofvcertain novel features of construction and combination of arts, the essential elements of which are ereinafter described with reference to the drawing which accompanies and forms a part of this specification.
In the' drawing, Figure 1 is a fragmentary plan view of a transmission housing having my improved lock a plied thereto; Fig. 2 is an'enlarged sectiona view taken on the line 2 2, Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is an enlar ed detail of a fra ent of the lock bolt, wit the two halves tV ereof separated.
As shown in Fi 2, the fly wheel housin 1 has bolted or oierwise suitably fastene thereto a casing 2 with a gasket 3 therebetween.
A threaded bushing 4 and locknut 5 form a closure for the lower end of the casing, and slidably mounted in the bushing 4 and in the casing at 5 is a lock bolt 6, the end 7 of which is fashioned to closely nest with the gear teeth 8 on the ily wheel 9', as ordinarily provided for coperation with an electric starting motor generator.
The upper end of the lock bolt is formed 'into a tongue 7', fitting in the slot 8 of the shaft 9, the pin 10 playing in the slot 11 of the ton 'ment o 'the lock bolt.
The spring 12 positioned in the casing 2 abuts against the washer 13,supported by l the pin 14 through the lock bolt 6 so the lock bolt is normally pressed downwardly in engagement with t e gear teeth of the iy whee e 7 so as to allow a vertical move-l f lowin With the spring controlled movement of the lock bolt as described, if the device should be locked as `hereinafter described when the ily wheel stands in such a position that the tongue on the end of the bolt would rest on top of one of the gear teeth instead of nesting therewith, the spring 12 would force the tongue vinto its locked position with respect to thev teeth, upon the first -slight movement of the fly wheel, if anyone should attempt to start the engine.
. The shaft 9 is threaded at 15 and engages -with the nut 16, rotatable by means ofthe hand wheel 17. A key 18 inserted through the p casing 2 and passing tangentially through the annular space 19 maintains the nut in a fixed vertical position so the aturning of the nut will raise or lower the shaft 9,. It is therefore evident that the rotation of the hand wheel 17 will draw the lock bolt 6 out of engagement with the teeth 8 if the shaft 9l is not locked by the -lock 20 and the hand wheel 17 cannot be rotated if the vertical movement ofthe shaft 9 is prevented by the lock 20.
The'lock 2O has a finger 21rotatable by the key 22, and is so positioned with respect to the latch 23 that when the key is rotated in a counter-clockwise direction the finger 21 swings the latch downwardly out of engagement with the catch 24 and then engaging with the lock bar 25 at 26 retracts the bar from engagement with the shaft 9.
A lip 27 prevents the further rotation of the finger 2l and as the latch 23 now engages with catch 24 in its notch 28 the key cannot -be withdrawn unless the device is again locked. l Inasmuch as the Hy wheelv 9 rotates in a counter-clockwise direction the tendencyvis for the gear teeth to force themselves into tighter engagement with the end 7 of the lock bolt 6, so the en ine cannot be started against `the locking 0% the lock bolt, as the spring 12, if comparativel light, will keep t e lock bolt in a positive ocked position in thev ear teeth.
hile I have described m invention and illustrated it in one particu ar design, I do not wish it understood that l limit myself to this'construct'ion, as it is evident that the application of the invention may be varied in vmany ways within the scope of the folclaim: Claim: In an automobile lock the combination of ioo v a casing, a lock bolt slidabl mounted in a lock including a bolt positioned in said said caslng, a sprlng for. hol ix said .lock casing, said bolt being en able with said,
bolt in an extended position, a aft joined shaft, and means in said lgoziefor withdraw- 10 to' said lock bolt, but allowing a definite ing Asaid bolt from engagement with said 5 slidable movement in relation thereto, roshaft.
tatable means carried by said casing for lifting said shaft and thereby said look bolt, y CHARLES KNAPP.
