V TRAIN-STOPPING mvrcn To all whom'it'may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM LEAcH, a subject of the 'King of Great Britain, and resident of Moose Jaw, in the Province of Saskatchewan, Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Train-Stopping Devices, of which the following is a specification,
This'invention relates to improvements in train stopping device, and the objects of the invention are to provide a'simple and effective device which will make it possible for a trainman or signal man outside of the train on'the ground to stop the trains in motion if from any cause the engineer has not seenihim, whereby accidents due to oversight n this respect may be avoided.

The signal members C' and each comprise'a frangible member 14 conveniently n socket illustrated having a retaining nut 16 formed with afiange 17 tapered to embrace a corresponding flange on the member 14,

If desired for passenger cars, an incandescent'lamp 14 may be provided .on the 'interior'of the member 14.
In this form of the invention when it is desired to stop the train, the signal man strikes and breaks the members C or D, which permits the air to escape from .the train line pipes through the branch 10 and 11 which will apply the brakes.
It may also be caused by well known means toactuate the whistle or other signal.

2 and 6, the branches 10 and 11 terminate on oppositefends of the check valves 19, controlled by hearing levers 20, the control being such that when the lever 20 isswung in either direction, from its normal vertical position, air will be permitted to escape; thus for instance the plug 21 on the valve may be formed with a central passageway 22 adapted when the lever is in either of the positions shown in dotted lines in Fig. 6 to register with outlet ports 23 and 24 in the casing 25.
It may also be found desirable to retain the lever in this inclined position, and for this purpose I provide a spring retaining member 26 adapted to receive and engage a projection 27 on the extended end of the lever 20, designed to retain a lever in either of its dotted line positions.
It will be seen that in this form of the invention, a train may be stopped by striking the lever moving it to its dotted line position. This operation may be caused to take place irrespective of the direction in which the train moves.
In the alternative form shown in Fig. 3, the train line pipe is connected to a central valve 28 whichis provided with an operating rod 29 which extends transversely fully across the bottom of the bar, and is formed with downwardly projecting depending ends 30 adapted to be engaged-by the signal" The construction of. the valve 20 is" such that when the valve'is swung to either of its dotted line positions, the train line pipes will be opened, which may be accomplished for instance by connecting the plug man.
