Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HILARION on ESCOBALES, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Producing Packages, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to apparatus for producing packages, pertaining more particularly to apparatus designed'to apply a wrapper to the embryo packa-gewith one end of the package expose Among the objects of the invention are 1. To provide an apparatus adapted to automatically fold a wrapper about the embryo package with one end of the package exposed, the wrapper having an adhesive connection with the embryo package.
2. To provide an apparatus adapted to apply a label or stamp over one end of the embryo package, the label or stamp ends extending over side faces of the packa e, and applying a' wrapper to the labe ed or stamped package in such manner as to leave the, stamped or labeled end exposed, the wrapper covering the label or stamp ends.
3. To provide an apparatus for these purposes adapted to automaticallya ply either or both to an embryo package, t e apparatus having a cycle of operations which will complete the desired action automatically.
4. To provide an apparatus which is simple and efficient in operation, durable in construction, and which can be manufactured at a comparatively low cost.
To these and other ends, the nature of which will be readily understood as the invention is hereinafter disclosed, said invention consists in the improved construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and more particularly pointed ou in the appended claims. I

Before entering into a detail description of the structures forming the mechanism of the present invention, I will first give a brief description of the successive steps in the formation of the package, and a brief descr ption of the general apparatus for providing the several steps.
The present invention deals more particularly with a preformed embryo packagea package which has been provided with a wrapper or other covering, preferably in loose formationwhich is preferably of more or less rectangular form. The embryo package is assumed to have been prepared and delivered to the present apparatus in its prepared form. ,The embryo package thus produced is indicated-at a. v
In the preferred package formation, the first step is the positioning of a label or s'tamp1ndicated at s-in proper relation to an end of the embryo package, this position being shown more particularly in Fig. 12, the label or stamp having an intermediate portion of its length applied to an end of 'the package. As the width of the label or stamp is preferably less than the package end, the locationispreferably such as to place the label or stamp at an intermediate portion of the package end. In other words,
the direction of length of the label or stamp extends practically at right angles to the direction of length of the package end, the length of one element being less than the width of the other, with the point of contact intermediate the ends of the element.
The next step is to complete the application of the label or stamp, this being provided by. applying the ends of the label or stamp to opposite sides or fa ces of the package, thus producing the result shown in Fl g 13.
his is followed by bringing the oppositev or faces and an end of the package, the
width of the wrapper being 'greater'than the length of the -.package end. As shown in Fig. 14, the contact is made substantially midway of the length and width of the wrapper blank. The wrapper blank is then folded on to the opposite sides of the package and on to the faces of the label or stamp ends, after which intermediate portlons of the wrapper are infolded, producing the result of 1g. 15. This operation is followed by turning down the upper wings thus produced-formingthe arrangement of Fig. 16-after which the lower wings are folded up to complete the package. As will be seen, the labelor stamp as well as the wrapper blankthe latter being indlcated at w-are provided with, adhesive stripes on one face, by, means of which each is adhesively secured in position. The stripes extend longitudinally and provide an efficient adhesive structure.
As will be understood, this general action practically has the effect of applying a stamp or label across one end of the embryo package, after which a more or less cup-like structure is applied about all portions'of thepackage excepting said end, the latter being exposed with the exception of the part covered by the stamp or label, this latter being exposed. Obviously, if the stamp'or label be omitted, the entire end of the package will be exposed. Hence, so far as the general operation is concerned, this package end may be considered as an exposed end whether the" stamp or label be applied or not. Since the applied elements are secured in position by adhesion, the applied structures will produce conditions more or less analogous to a tight wrapped structure.
This is of advantage in that while the wrapper is cup-like in formation, it is secured to the ackage without the use of any other holding mechanism than the adhesive with which the blank 'is provided, this result being, obtainable by reason of the fact that the adhesive 'is applied'to the wrapper in advance of folding, so that not only is the blank provided with the adhesive necessary to secure the folds in position with respect to the blank itself, but also to retain the folded formation fixedly on the package.
As will be understood, the several steps are such as will permit the general wrapping operation to be provided with embryo pack-' .ages having various contents, the invention not being limited in this respect. For instance, the embryo package may be a cigarette package with the loose wrapping, or it may be a plug of tobacco properly looselywrapped, these being simply examples of package contents when employed in connection with tobacco products. Obviously,other commodities mayform the package contents.
The present invention. is designed to produce this result through the operation of a series of instrumentalities which are made effective in a predetermined sequence, these instrumentalitles being so arranged and 011k.
crating in such manner that a plurality of packages may be undergoing treatment concurrently, this being made possible by a stage-like treatment, each stage providing for a certain amount of treatment, the result being that the unit of'time for limiting the introduction of embryo packagesthe basis for computing the capacity of-the apparatusis practically controlled by the tune required for a stage operation. This W111 be understood from the following brief detscrlption of the operation of the appara us:
The embryo package'islocated opposite a plunger reciprocating horizontally, either manually or by the operation of a conveyer structure. The plunger thenoperates to advance the package in the direction of its lengthpresenting one end in advance bringing the advancegend into contact with a position-ed stamp or label, the face of the stamp or label which contacts with the package being adhesively coated. The plunger continues to advance the package and its stamp or label into an open-ended compartment formed on 'an endless carrier which travels intermittently in a direction transverse to the direction of advance of the package, the carrier having a plurality of compartments, each intermittent movement placing one of the compartments in the path of travel of an advancing package. The several'structures are so arranged that as the package advances, the ends of the stamp are drawn on to the top and bottom faces of the package, the completion of the advance movement of the plunger leaving the package with the stamp applied in one compartmerit, the plunger then returning to its initial position. This may be considered as one stage.
The compartment-carrying conveyer then vance end of the second plunger, the result I being that advance of this plunger carries the package-with the opposite end of the package as the advance end, the advancing plunger carrying the package out of the compartment within whlch it had been transferred. This advance of the package brings this package end into contact with the adhesive face of the wrapper blank which extends vertically at this time, the continued movement of the package folding the upper and lower ends of the wrapper onto the upper and lower faces of the labeled or stamped package, and causing projecting portions to be tucked in as the package advances, the end of the plunger movement positioning the partially wrapped package over a vertically extending wel1,'the package having the conformation shown in Fig. 15 at the end of the plunger movement. The plunger then returns to its initial position, practically completing what may be termed the second stage of the operation.
The delivery of the package dur ng the second stage places it on a pair of yleldable supports above the well and beneath a pair of plungers, these plungers operating lndependently, the first plunger moving downward to fold the top wing, as in Fig. 16, the second plunger being operative to shlft the yielding supports and open the well to the entrance of the package, both of these plungers moving downwardly, the second plunger acting to carry the package past the shifted supports-which act to fold up the lower wings during this movementand locate the completed package inthe well. The plungers, then return initial position, the yielding supports moving to initial position as the movement of the second plunger permits, thus completing the third stage. The well permits the gradual movement of the completed package therethrough to a suitable point of discharge.
The movements of the package from, the time of introduction 'until located on the yieldable supports, is preferably on the same horizontal plane, the package moving first endwise in one direction, then transverse to this direction, and then endwise in the opposite direction. The movement of the package after location on the yieldable supports is downwardly in a vertical direction at right angles to the horizontal plane.
This general operation provides for the positioning of the blanks in different stages, the label or stamp being received and applied in the first stage, and the wrapper blankreceived, and partially applied in the second stage. Obviously, this permits of the omission of the stamp or label application should it be desired to 'operate without this feature, simply by omitting to position a stamp or label in the first stage, so that the apparatus is adapted to operate under different conditions as may be desired.
The blanks are fed into position by suitable feed mechanism of a type disclosed in companion applications, these mechanisms being adapted to permit of individual feeding of blanks and the application ofadhesive to a face of the blank, so that when the blanks are positioned, they are located to intersect the travel paths of the package and in position to provide for the proper application of the blanks to the package.
In describing the apparatus in greater detail, I will, as far as possible, describe the parts in the order in which they are brought into operation as above indicated.
Referring to the drawings, 20 designates a frame of suitable type, having a table-like top 20*, this table being adapted to support certain operating ekments together with a supplemental table .20 on which certain of the instrumentalities are mounted, table 20 being supported on suitable standards 20.
Located below top 20 is a shaft 21 forming the main shaft of the apparatus. this shaft being driven from a suitable drive source; in the drawings this is shown as a fast and loose pulley structure 22 having a gear connection with shaft 21.-
23 indicates a reciprocating plunger mounted in a suitable guide or guides, and normallypositioned to one end of the package-receiving station, the latter of Suitable arrangement which will permit of location of apackage in proper position relative to an open-ended casing 24, this casing being located at the opposite end of the station and in such position as will permit of the free movement of plunger 23 through the interior of the casing.
-As pointed out, the receiving station may be ofany desirable'type, in so far as it will permit of proper location of the embryo pavkage in such position that advance of pll nger 23 will carry the package endw'ise thmugh the channel of casing 24. A suitable support may be provided which will permit of positioning'of the" package manually. However, in the drawings, I have shown a conveyer structure by' means of which packages can be placed in proper position by simple mechanism, this arrange ment permitting the-structure to be operated as an auxiliary to a packaging machine, if desired. The specific embodiment is shown as in the form of an endless carrier 25 mounted on rolls 26, the upper flightof the carrier being preferably supported in suitable manner. Supported in suitable manner, as by brackets, is a stop structure 27- which may be in the form of separate stop members located-on opposite sides of the alinement with the channelof casing 24.
If desired, the stop structure may be made adiustable as may be found desirable. I
The conveyer is preferably driven-intermittently through a suitable drive connection between a shaft 28 presently referred to and the shaft 26 of one of the rolls, shaft 28 being driven intermittently. While I prefer to employ this intermittent drive it will, of course, be understood that the conveyer may operate continuously, the packages simply lining up on the upper flight and slipping relative to the conveyer until plunger 23 completes its cycle of operation carrying the advance packagefrom off the conveyer and permitting the remaining file of packages to advance 'until' brought into contact with the stop'structure. If desired I may employ suitable guides 25 for the purpose of retaining the file of packages in position.
A package is permitted to pass to this position whenever plunger 23 is in its inactive position .(to the left of conveyer 25 in Fig.-
1). With the package in position, the plunger advances into contact with the rear end of the package and advances the latter through casing 24 and into an open-ended compartment on a traveling conveyer presently referred to, the package taking up its stamp or label while traveling through casing 24. The plunger then returns to its initial position. This reciprocating movement of the plunger is provided through operative connections with shaft 21 as follows:
29 indicates a 'camon shaft 21, said cam having a groove 29 (Fig. 4) within which a suitable member, such for instance as roller 30, extends, said roller being mounted on an arm or lever 31 pivotally mounted on a shaft or rod 32, the cam groove being 0perative to oscillate the arm or lever on its pivot. 33 indicates a rack bar having its direction of length extending vertically and mounted in suitable guides, said rack bar having a link connection with the .free end of arm or lever 31 beneath table top 20, said rack bar extending through top 20 and having its teeth in mesh with the-teeth of a pinion 34 carried by a shaft 35 below the plane of plunger 23 and extending transversely of the direction of length of said plunger. Mounted on shaft 35 is a gear 36 which is in mesh with teeth formed on the under surface of plunger 23.
By this arrangement, movement of shaft 21 in the direction 'of the'arrow in Fig. 4, will causethe free end of lever 31 to be raised, thus raising rack bar 33 and operating shaft 35 through pinion 34, this movement of shaft 35 causing plunger 23 to ad- .Vance through the gear connection therewith. When cam groove 29 permits lever 31 to move downward, the operative connections described will cause the plunger to return to its initial position. In this manner plunger can alsobe controlled so as to provide for pro er operation, the cam control permitting of variations in speed if desired.
Casing 24 is provided with openings 24 through which the stamp or label 8 is'adapted to extend, the lower end of the stamp being supported in suitable manner, as indicated for instance in Fig. 5. This position of the stamp or label causes it to intersect the travel path of the advancing package, so that when the advance end of the latter comes in contact with this positioned stamp, the latter is carried onward with the package, thus drawing the opposite ends of the stamp or label on to the top and bottom faces of the embryo package,-the stamp be.- ing spaced from the edge of casing 24 and hence the upper and lower channel walls of the casin will act to apply the stamp or label to t ese faces, the character of stamp end of the package.
The stamp feed mechanism may be of any suitable type, a preferred arrangement being of the general ty e disclosed in my companion application fi ed March 13, 1917, Ser. No. 154,447. It may be noted that the wrapper blank feed mechanism presently referred to is preferably of similar type and may bemodified along the lines disclosed in my companion application filed Sept. 13,
1917, Ser. No. 191,259. The general idea of these constructions is disclosed more particularly in Fig. 11, ,in which 37 designates a table for supporting the stamps, or blanks in horizontal planes'and in pile formation, the frame for the table carrying a reciprocatin advancing carriage 38 which 0 rates to a vance the owermost blank of t epile into the throat .of a band-formedflight shown as in the form of endless bands beplane, the delivery points being spac past an adhesive-applying mechanism 39 (the adhesive applying wrapper blanks being indicated at 39*), the band-formed flight being, operative to feed the blanks individually and downwardly, so
that the feeding action will present the stamps of blanks successively in vertical planes. In Fig. 5, I have shown the individual mechanisms for the stamp or label and for the wrapper in order to indicate the general locations when feeding devices of the type indicated are employed. As will be seen from Fig. 1, the stamps and the blanks are fed on substantially the same vertical apart, the stamp delivery being in front of the blank delivery. This arrangement 'not only accommodates for an advantageous general operation, but also enables theusc, p if desired, of a single drive connection be-- tween the main shaft 21 and the feeding mechanism. For instance, shaft 40 in Figs. 5 and 7 may be a shaft common in both mechanisms, the several operating parts of each mechanism being operatively connected to and driven from this shaft. To. operate both mechanisms, therefore, it is necessary only to provide proper drive to shaft 40, any suitable operating connections being adapted for the purpose, as for instance gear connections between shaft 21 and a vertical shaft 41, the latter having a bevelgear connection with shaft 40, this being a simple arrangement.
Further detail descriptionof. the feeding mechanism is omitted, since the specific structures of these mechanisms are disclosed and claimed in other applications, the present disclosure pertaining more perticularly to the relative locations of these mechanisms.
Advance of the embryo package through casing 24, therefore serves to apply the stamp or label to the advance end and to the adjacent opposite sides or faces of the package. As the package continues its movement under the action of plunger 23, it passes into an open-ended casing or compartment 42 carried by the upper flight of an endless carrier 43, the latter preferably having a plurality of these casings or compartments in spaced apart arrangement in the carrier .band.

Carrier 43 may be of any suitable type, but I prefer to employ a carrier in the form of a thin steel band to mechanism for the which casings or compartments 42 are secured.
Carrier 43 is moved intermittently so as to locate successive compartments 42 opposite casing 24 in position to receive an advancing package, the carrier dwelling in this position a suflicient length of time to permit proper receipt of the package, and. then advancing to locate the succeeding comparatment in this position. Any suitable drive mechanism for providing this operation to the carrier may "be employed, a simple arran ement being shown more particularly in ig. 7, in which a mechanical 'movement of suitable type-as for ined stance a Geneva stop movement-is interposed between shafts 21 and 45, the drawlngs showing a disk 46 carrying a flange and pin structure mounted on shaft 21, the comlemental member 47 being loosely mounted on shaft 45, and operatively co'nnectedto support 44 also loosely mounted on this shaft. vide the intermittent rotatory movement to support 44. Themovement of this support operates support 44 through the carrier connection, theresult being that shaft 28 practically rotates in unison with member 47. As heretofore pointed out, shaft 28 forms the drive shaft for carrier 25, so that advance of the packages on thelatter carrier is timed in synchronism with the movements of endless carrier 43.
Mounted in rear of casing 24 is a casing 48, this casing having openings 48 for the passage of the wrapper blank, the wrapper 3 feed mechanism being located in position to feed a blank downwardly through these openings so as to locate a blank in a substantially vertical plane relative to said casing.
Casing 48 is open-ended, one open end being opposite or compartment 42 which has been shifte from the point where the package was received therein, the spacing of successive compartments 42 being compartment is in position relative to casing 24, the preceding compartment is opposite the channel of casing 48. As shown in Fig. 14, the wrapper has a width greater than the length of an end of the package, the end of the packa e bein intermediate the 'side edges of t e blan The construction for providing the. proper positioning of the ackage relative to the blank is shown in ig. 1 as in the form of guides 49 'within the channel of casing 48- and positioned to uide the package which is to be discharged rom compartment 42 located opposite cas ing 48, the blank extending on opposite sides of the travel path of the package as seen in Fig. 1.
The package is discharged from compartment 42 by means of a reciprocating plunger This arrangement operates to prothe open end of the casin such that when one v 50 mounted in suitable guides, this plunger, like plunger 23, having a rack tooth formation on its under face adapted to be engaged by the teeth of a gear 51 mounted on shaft 52 operatively connected to shaft '35 by means of shaft 45 geared to shafts 35 and 52, the ear connections being shown as of the spiral type.- In the particular form shown in the drawings, shaft 45 thus not onl acts to operatively connect shafts 35 an 52, but alsoforms a support for the carrier support 44 and member 47, thelatter, as heretofore stated, being loosely mounted on the shaft. Obviously, shafts 35 and 52 may be operatively connected in other ways, or the drive connectionsbetween shaft 21 and gear 36 may be duplicated with respect to gear 51, the articular mechanism shown providing a simple arrangement by means of which a single "cam wlll provide the operations for both plungers 23 and 50, these plungers having their advance movements in opposite directions and concurrently through this form of mechanism.
Advance of plunger 50 causes it to con tact with that end of the package to which the label was applied during movement of the package through casing 24, plunger 50 pushing the package out "of compartment 42 into the channel of casing 48 between guides 49 and bringing. the opposite end of the package into contact with the blank positioned in said casing. As the plunger continues its advance movement, the action of the top and bottom walls of casing 48 causes the opposite ends of the blank to be folded rearwardly as the blank is drawn by the advance of the-package, the package and the wrapper blank then pas'sin into cooperative relation with folders .53 0 suitable type lo-' cated in the channel of casing-48, the folders being shown as of the yielding type. These folders serve to turn in portions of the sides of the wrapper to produce the gusset fold formation shown in Fig. 15. During the remainder of the advance movement of plunger 50, the package retains the shape shown generally in Fig. 15, upper and lower side wings being provided by this forming of the gusset fold. After traversing -the channel of casing 48, the ackage--in the form shown in Fig. 15 1s moved into position over a well, presently referred to, and more particularly on to a pair of pivoted doors 54 located above said well, these doors normally lyin in the plane corresponding to that on whic the package is moving, the package passing beneath a plate 55 forming part of a plunger structure 56, this plunger being shown more particularly in Fig. 2 and shown as having a pair of fingers 55 depending from plate 55. As shown in Fig. 8, these fingers normally lie above the top face of 7 doors 54. 5 As shown in Fig. 1,p1unger 56 is located within the walls of a plunger 57--shown in detail in Fig. 3-the rearwardly projecting walls of plunger 57 extending along the sides of plate 55. This arrangement'places fingers 55 within the space defined by the walls of plunger 57, these fingers being so located so as to permit completion of the advance movement of plunger 50, the advance end of the package'coming to rest either at a point spaced from these fingers or in juxtaposition thereto as may be found desirable.
The normal position of plunger 57 is above the plane of the top of the package when the latter isbeing introduced beneath plate 55 see Fig. 8-'so that the top and bottom end wings of the wrapper formation freely pass into position beneath plate 55, the package being supported on doors 54, the latter being preferably spring-held. After the package reaches this position, plunger 57 is moved downwardly, thus bringing its rear.- wardly extendin walls 57 a into contact with the top wings o the wrapper conformation, the continued downward movement of these walls foldin these upper wings into contact with the si es of the package, as shown in Fig. 16, the completion of this operation leaving the parts in approximately'the positions shown in Fig. 9. Plunger 56 then begins its downward movement, fingers 55 becoming operative to rock doors 54 on. their pivots to move said doors out of the path of the descending package, the latter being moved downwardly by the action of plate 55. Since, at the startof this downward movement, the'lower wings of the wrapper were unfolded and extend outward, this downward movement of the package will, through the relativemovements ofthe package and the doors, fold these wrapper wing portions so as to bring the latter into con-- tact with the previousl folded wings, the spring supports for the doors tendingto pro-' vide a yielding folding action and at the same time tending to smooth the fold by rea- 1 son of the friction present between the mov- 1ng)package and the doors.
, uring this latter folding operation, the fingersprovide an advantageous action in that the rocking movement of the doors is 11 not made dependent upon the movement of the package itself, the door movements be- 1ng provided by the fingers and not by the package.
The downward movement of plunger 56 continues, thus carrying" the completely wrapped package into position between parallel flights of endless carriers which form the wel within which the package is to be received and through which it travels in suitable manner, as by the movements produced by the successive introduction of packages through the operations of the plun er. ThlS movement of plunger 56 carries p ate 55 beneath the plane of doors 54, and to retain the latter in an open position so as to permit return of the plunger, 1. provide the plate with suitable upstanding members or wings 55 which maybe in the form of flanged structure extending throughout the length of plate 55. It will be obvious,- however, that a plurality of upwardly extending fingers may be employed in place of the single plate, the purpose being to retain the doors open, Fig. 10 indicating the general operation in this respect;
The movements of plungers 56 and 57 are provided by cams 58 and 59 respectively, mounted on shaft 21, the cam groove contours being shown in Fig. 7. --The operative connection between each plunger and its cam is substantially similar with respect to the two plungers, each being approximately as follows: a
60 indicates an arm carried at one end of a bell crank lever 61 pivotally supported by shaft or rod 32, the opposite end of said lever being connected to a vertical rod 62 carrying a cross-head63 to which theplunor is secured: Arm 60 is adapted to straddle shaft 21, the free end of the arm carrying a roller or other form of connection which is adapted to'extend into the groove of the cam with which it coeperates. As the cam rotates, arm 60 will be moved back and forth on shaft 21, thus moving bell crank lever 61- and providing vertically reciproeating movements to the plungers. The contours of the cam grooves are, of course, arranged to providev for proper timing of plunger movements relative to the general operation as well as relative to each other.
The, flights of the well, indicated generally at 64, may be of suitable contour, a simple arrangement being the use of endless bands of the coil spring type, thus tending to provide more or less pressure on the folded wings of the wrapper durin the ,period required to traverse the well, this time being generally such as to practically insure that the adhesive willfhave become properly dried bylthe time the package passes from the we 1.
As will be seen, therefore, the embryo package movements throughout the different cycles leading up to the last folding operatlon, are conducted on substantially a'single horizontal plane, the package being first moved in the direction of its length through casing 24 and into compartment42, then moved transverse to this direction of length by movementsof the compartments, then again moving in the direction of its length but with the direction of advance reverse to that of the original movement, the package coming to rest beneath plate 55. Further movements of the package are the downward movement which carries it out of this horizontal plane and-ginto the well, at the same time completing the wrapping operation.
As will be understood, the movements of 7 plungers 23-and 50 may take place concurrently and while carrier 43 is resting. Plungers 56 and 57 are made operative to complete operation betweenthe time of positioning of one package beneath plate 55 and the time when a succeeding package. is to be advanc'ed by plunger 50, in this respect, it being necessary only that plate 55 shall be above the planeof the advancing package in order that the advance of the package may not be restrained in any material manner. Consequently, the capacity of the machine is only limited by the time required in completing the cycle of operation of either plunger 23 or 50 and that required to move a compartment 42 from one position to its succeeding'position, an arrangement which will permit of comparatively large capacity operations, an-advantageous factor in packaging operations, especially where it is desired to secure the wrapper in position by adhesive connection not only between parts of the wrapper but between the wrapper and the package itself.
As will be seen, the application of the stamp or label through its adhesive connection practically secures it throughout. its length to the walls of the embryo package, the ends of the label or stamp then being further secured and covered by the appli cation of the wrapper, leaving simply the end and the stamp or label exposed. This provides a form of package which is securely wrapped while leaving one end. ex-. posed and the cup-shaped wrapper securely positioned through its adhesive connection with the package, this effect being increased where the stamp orv label is employed, in that the connection between the stamp and the wrapper aids in preventing shifting of the cup formation.
From the above description it will be seen that although the plungers are each of the reciprocating type, while the transfer carrier 43 is movable in but one directionto advance the casings or compartmentseach of these elements are operated from the same shaft, the mechanisms for controlling the time of operation and for setting into motion the operative connections are allcarried by this shaft. This is brought 'aboutby the use of controlling cams which enables of the ability to employ-a desired pattern for the cam groove, the result being that while the operating mechanisms are ge'ner-.
ally of simple character, timing can be controlled with nicety so as to produce maxi:
- more or less flexibility in control by reason ing out the general structure and providing the desired operations, it will be readily understood that changes and variations therein may be required or found desirable to meet the exigencies of use, and I desire to be understood as reserving the right to make any'and all such changes or modifications therein as may be found desirable or necessary, in so far as the same may fall within the spirit and scope of the invention as expressed in the accompanying claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, is:
1. In apparatus for applying wrapping elements to an embryo package, means for applying a strip of sheet material to one end of said package with a portion of said strip extending onto an adjacent side of the package, and means for applying to the package a cup type wrapper with the bottom of the cup wrapper at the opposite end of the package, and with a side of the cup overlying said portion of the strip, the construction being such that the part of the strip applied to the end of the package will be uncovered by said cup wrapper.
2. In apparatus for applying wrapping elements to an embryo package, means for applying a stripof sheet material to one end of said package'with portions of said strip extending onto opposite sides of the package, and means for applying to the package a cup type wrapper with the bottom of the cup wrapper at the opposite end of the package and with side portions of the cup over lying said portions of the strip, the construction being such that the part of said strip applied to the end of the package will be uncovered by said cup wrapper.
3. In apparatus for applying wrapping elements to an embryo package, means for applying a strip of sheet material to one end of said package with a portion of said strip extending onto a side of the package, and means for applying to the package a cup type wrapper having a single thickness at the opposite end of the package and overlying the sides of the package and said portion of the strip, the construction being such that the part of said strip applied to the end of th package will be uncovered by said cup wrapper.

7. In apparatus for applying wrapping elements to an embryo package, means for applying a strip of sheet material to one end of said package with a portion of said strip extending onto an adjacent side of the package, and means for applying to the package a cup type wrapper with the bottom of the cup wrapper at the opposite end of the package, and with a single thickness or aside of the cup overlying said portion of the strip, the construction being such that the part of the strip applied to the end of the package will be uncovered by said cup wrapper.
8. In apparatus for applying wrapping elements to an embryo package, means for applying an adhesively coated strip of sheet material to one end of said package with the ends of said trip extending onto opposite sides of the package, and means for applying to the package a cup type wrapper, including means for applying a single sheet to the opposite end of the package with an intermediate portion of said sheet in engagement with said end, folding the end portions of said sheet against opposite sides of the package with a single thickness in overlying relation to said strip ends, and folding the sides of said sheet against the remaining uncovered sides of the package to form a cup type wrapper.
11. In apparatus for applying wrapping elements to an embryo package, means for moving the package in opposite directions, means for applying to the package during its motion in one direction a covering element engaging said end and adjacent sides of the package only, and means for applying during themotion of the package in the opposite direction another element to the second or opposite end and all the sides adjacent said end of said package only. a 12. In apparatus for applying wrapping elements to an embryopackage, means for advancing the package in oppositedirections and in different vertical planes, means for shifting the package from one vertical plane to another between successive advancing movements, means for presenting an element for application to an end of the package during package advancing movements in one direction, means for presenting another element for application to the opposite end of the package during package movements in the opposite direction, and stationary guide means including provisions located in advance of the said presented elements for controlling the path of travel of the package during its movement in the opposite directions.

In apparatus for applying wrappingelements to an embryo package, means for advancing the package in opposite directions and in different vertical planes, means for shifting the package from one vertical, plane to another between successive advancing movements, means for presenting an element fo application to an end of the packparallel directions, the package shifting movements being transverse to such vertical planes and stationary guide means including provisions located. in advance of said presented elements for controlling the path 'of travel of the package during its movement in'the opposite directions,

In apparatus for applying a cup-like wrapping to an embryo package, means for advancing the package, means for locating a wrapper blank in the path of advancing travel of the package, the positioned blank having a face adapted for adhesive connection with package walls and having a length sufiicient to cover an end and opposite face walls of the package while retaining the opposite end wall exposed, means for applying the wrapper to said walls during the pack-v age advancing movement, a temporary support for the advanced package, and means operative on the supported package for securing wrapper portions to the opposite side walls of the package to complete the cup formation.

In apparatus for applying a cup-like wrapping to an embryo package, means for advancing the package, means for locating a wrapper blank in the path of advanding travel of the package, the positioned blank having a face adapted for adhesive connection with package walls and having a length the wrapper to said walls during the package advancing movement, a temporary support for the advanced package, means operative on the supported package for securing wrapper portions to the opposite side Walls of the package, means for moving the wrapped package in "a direction transverse to its direction of advance movement, said support forming a means in the path of the latter movement for completing the wrapping o eration.

In apparatus for applying a cup-like wrapping to embryo packages, means for advancing the ackage in a predetermined path, means or locating a wrapper blank in the travel path of the package, the positioned blank having a face adapted for adhesive connection with package walls, the advancing movement of the package applying the blank to an end and opposite face walls of the package, and means made operative on-the blank upon completion of the package advance movement for completing wrapping of the blank, said means including a yieldable support for the advanced package, and, a vertically reciprocating plunger for shifting the package transverse to the direction of advance movement, said support being operative to fold wrapper I portions during such package movements.

In apparatus for applying a cup-like wrapping to embryo packages, means for advancing the package in a predetermined path, means for locating a wrapper blank in the travel path of the package, the positioned blank having a face adapted for adhesive connection with package walls, the advancing movement of the package applying the blank to an end and opposite face walls of the package, and means made oper-' ative on the blank upon'completion of the package advance movement for completing wrapping of the blank, said means including a yieldable support for the advanced package, a vertica ly reciprocating plunger operative on the wrapper to partially fold it while the package is supported, and means for shifting the package relative to the support to complete folding operation.

In apparatus for applying wrapping elements to embryo packages, independent stations for the presentation of the several elements in the path of travel of an advancing package, said stations being located at spaced points in the package travel path, means for applying elements in predetermined relation to the package during package advancing movements, stationary pack-- age guiding means including channels located in advance of said stations, and means for advancing the package through the several stations along said channels, said means including a pair of reciprocating plungers operatively connected to move in unison and individually active with respect to the several stations'and successively active on the package, said plungers having their advancing movements in opposite directions, and means operative to transfer the advanced package of one plunger to position in the path of travel of the other plunger.

In apparatus for applying wrappings to embryo packages, means for advancing the package to apply the wrapping, said means including a pair of plungers, and mechanism for reciprocating said plun ers, said mechanism including a shaft operatlvely connected to each of' said plungersv and carrying a gear, a constantly driven cam and its drive shaft, a lever oscillated by said cam, and a rack cooperating with said gear and adapted to be reciprocated by the lever movements.

In apparatus for applying wrappings to embryo packages, means for advancing the package to apply the wrapping, said means including a pair of plungers having their advancing movements in opposite directions, and mechanism for reciprocating said plungers, said mechanism including a shaft operatively connected to each of said plungers and carryin 1 a gear, a constantlydriven cam and its drive shaft, a lever OSClllated by said cam, and a rack cooperating with said gear and adapted to be reciprocated by the lever movements.

In apparatus for applying wrappings' to embryo packages, means for advancing the package to apply the wrapping, said means including a pair of plungers, and mechanism for reciprocating said plungers, said mechanism including a shaft carr ing a gear, a constantly-driven cam and its rive shaft, a lever oscillated by said cam, a rack cooperating with said ear and adaptedto be reciprocated by the ever movements, and means for operatively connecting said gear carrying shaft with the plungers, said connectlng means being operative to provide the advancing movement of the several plungers concurrentlyand in opposite directions.

In apparatus for applying wrappings to embryo packages, means for advancing the package to apply the wrapping, said means including a pair of plungers, and mechanism for reciprocating saidplungers, said mechanism including a shaft carrying a gear, a constantly-driven cam and its drive shaft, a lever oscillated by said cam, a rack cooperating with said gear and adaptedto be reciprocated by the lever movements, and means for operatively connecting said gear carrying shaft with the plungers, said connectlng means being operative to provide movements of the several plungers of substantially equal length and concurrently with the plunger advancing movements in opposite directions.

In apparatus for applying wrappings to embryo packages, means for advancin the package to apply the Wrapping, sai means including a pair of plungers, and mechanism for reciprocating said plungers, said mechanism including a shaft carryinga gear, a constantly-driven cam and its drive shaft, a lever oscillated by said cam, a rack cooperating with said gear and adapted to be reciprocated by the lever movements, and means for operatively connecting said gear carrying shaft with the plungers, said connecting means being operative to provide the advancing movement of the several plungers concurrently and in opposite directions, said connections including a rack face carried by each plunger, and gears within the connections cooperating with said rack faces.

In apparatus for applying wrapping elements to embryo packages, a receiving station for the package, independent stations for the presentation of the several wrapping elements, each presentation station being located in advance of element folding instrumentalities, and means for advancing the 65 package from the rec a ivin,g; station through the presentation stations and folding instrumentalities successively, said means including a reciprocating plunger movable through the recelvlng and one of the presentation stations to advance the package to apply one of the elements, a carrier for receiving the advanced package and transferring it to position in advance of the succeeding presentation station, a plunger operative to discharge the package from the carrier and movable through the latter presentation station to apply another element to the package, and stationary guide means including provisions located in advance of the said latter presentation station for controlling the path of travel of the package during engagement of the latter plunger therewith, the direction of transfer movement of the advanced package maintaining the latter against reversal in position of the upper and lower faces of the package.

In apparatus for applying wrapping elements to embryo packages, a receiving station for the package, independent stations for the presentation of the several wrapping elements, each presentation station being located in advance of element folding instrumentalities, and means for advancing the package from the receiving station through the presentation stations and folding instrumentalities successively,said means including a reciprocating plunger movable through the receiving and one of the presentation stations to advance the package to apply one of the elements, a carrier for recelving the advanced package and transferring it to position in advance of the succeeding presentation station, and a plunger operative to discharge the package from the carrier and movable through the latter presentation sta- 105 tion to apply another element to the package, said plungers having their movements in substantially the same horizontal plane.

In apparatus for applying wrapping elements to embryo packages, a receiving 100 station for the package, independent stations for the presentation of the several wrapping elements, each presentation station being located in advance of element folding instrumentalities, and means for ad- 115 vancing the package from the receiving station through the presentation stations and folding instrumentalities successively, said means including a reciprocating plunger movable through the receiving and one of the 120 presentation stations to advance thepackage to apply one of the elements, a carrier for latter presentation-station for controlling the 1 tion path of travel of the package during engagement of the latter plunger therewith, said plungers having their advancing movements in opposite directions.

In apparatus for applying wrapping elements to embryo packages, a receiving station for the package, independent stations for the presentation of the several wrapping elements, each presentation station eing located in advance of element folding instrumentalities, and means for advancing the package from the receiving station through the presentation stations and folding instrumentalities successively, said ger operative to discharge the package from the carrier and movable through the latter presentation station to apply another element to .the package, said plungers being movable in arallel vertical planes with the movements in substantially the same horizontal plane, the advancing movements being in opposite directions.

In apparatus for applying wrapping elements to embryo packages, a receiving station for the package, independent stations for the presentation of the several wrapping elements, each presentation station being located in advance of element folding instrumentalities, and means for-advancing the package from the receiving station through the presentation stations and folding instrumentalities successively, said means including a reciprocating plunger movable through the receiving and one of the presentation stations to advance the package to apply one of the elements, a carrier for receiving the advanced package and transferring it to position in advance of the succeeding presentation station, and a plunger operative to discharge the package from. the carrier and movable through the latter presentation station to apply another element to the package, said 'plungers having their advancing movements concurrently and of substantially equal length.

In apparatus for applying wrapping elements to embryo packages, applying instrumentalities extending in different Vertical planes, means for advancing a package through said instrumentalities successively, said means including a pair of reciprocating plungers having their advancing movements in opposite directions and located in the respective planes of the instrumentalities, a transfer carrier for shifting a package from one instrumentality plane to that. of a succeeding instrumentality, said carrier having a plurality of package-receiving compartments to permit concurrent location of a compartment opposite each of the instrumentalitie's, and means for operating said plungers and said carrier, said latter means including a drive shaft, operative connections between said shaft and the plunger for providing reciprocating movements to the plunger intermittently, and operative connections between said shaft and the transfer carrier for Iproviding carrier advancing movements intermittently. y
