To an whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, KOMANOSUKE TOGAMI, a subject of the Emperor of Japan, and resident of 63 K yanagimachi at the city of Fukuoka, in t e Prefecture of Fukuoka and Empire of Japan, have invented a new and useful Hydraulic Gastric Examiner or Hydraulic Stomach-Examining Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements 1n hydraulic gastric examiners or hydraulic stomach examining apparatus whereln a closed liquid vessel and an open liquid vessel are disposed in a row on a higher stage, and the closed vessel is provided at the lower bottom with a discharge pipe to change the atmospheric pressure within as desired and made to communicate with a closed vessel to be connected with a astric catheter by extending an air pipe ointed to the head of the first-mentioned closed vessel and inserting the extended end of the pipe into the latter closed vessel, and the open vessel is fitted at the bottom with a discharge pipe to make the same communicate with the gastric catheter either directly or indirectly, all these parts being so arranged and constructedtha-t there is produced difference in pressure between the interior of the stomach and either of thesaid two closed vessels.
"An object of this invention is to provide a hydraulic gastric examiner or stomach examining apparatus calculated to render the. process of taking gas or liquid out of a stomach surer and speedier.
Another object of thisinvention is to provide a hydraulic gastric examiner or stom ach examining apparatus adapted to introduce any gas into the stomach and to survey any change in gastric capacity most minutely and safely according to an increase or decrease in the atmospheric pressure within the stomach. y
A further object of thisinvention is to provide a hydraulic gastric examiner or stomach examining apparatus capable of increasing the usefulness of the gastric catheter by rendering its use more convenient,
much safer, and considerably easier through the various functions of its own.
Other objects and advantages to be derived from the use of this invention will appear in the following detailed description and the claims taken with an inspection of the accompanying drawing which is a slant view of the entire apparatus of this invention and wherein similar numerals and letters for reference designate like and corresponding parts.
In the accompanying drawing, 1 represents a closed glass vessel, having a capacity of about three thousand grams, provided at the lower part with a discharge pipe 3 and a cock 3' and fitted at the upper part with a bent pipe 5 which connects this vessel with a closed vessel 6 arranged onthe lower stage, and a branch pipe 5' is provided at a suitable part of the bent pipe 5 to make the same communicate with an air gage A. The closed vessel 6 is fitted at the lower part with a discharge pipe 9 and a cock 9 and provided at the upper part with a connecting pipe 6' which connects the same with the head of a closed vessel 7. The closed vessel 7 is fitted at the lower part with a discharge pipe 10 and a cook 10 and provided at the upper part with a connecting pipe 7 which causes the same to communicate with an air gage B, a joint pipe 8 being arranged at another part of the vessel as shown. An open vessel 2 having a capacity of about four thousand grams, arranged on a level with the closed vessel 1, is provided at the lower part with a discharge pipe 4 and a cock 4', this pipe being connected in a T-shape with a connecting pipe 11 of an elevating vessel 12. And the connecting pipe 11 is fitted with a cock 11", and its farther end is connected with a cock 13 of a communicating pipe 13. y
The cocks 3', 9, 10, 11', and 13 are, respectively, closed and the closed vessel 1 is filled with fresh water andthe open vessel 2 is filled with some suitable wash or lotion as a first step, and then the apparatus is operated in various ways according to the objects in view. For convenience, these ways are termed as the first operation, the second operation, and the third operation, thus:
The first operation: To take gastric juice out of the stomach, the joint pipe 8 is connected with a gastric catheter in the patients mouth, and then the cock 3 is opened, whereupon the water in the closed vessel 1 is discharged through the discharge pipe 3 and the atmospheric pressure within the vessel is reduced, with the consequence that low pressure is produced in the closed vessel 6 and the closed vessel 7 connected therewith through, the bent pipe 5, and the fluid in the stomach is completely sucked up into the vessel 7 going farther into the vessel 6 in case the vessel 7 is full of liquid. And,'since volumetric lines or gradations are provided at the outer surface of these'two vessels, the
volume of the contents can be readily told thereby. By "this same method, the gas or gases in the patients stomachmay be taken out, and in this case the volume of the gas or gases-may becalculated from the degree of the lowering of the water-level in the closed vessel 1.. As a different way of taking the gas, the bent ,pipe 5 is closed after filling the closed vessels 6 and 7, the farther end of the Jointpipe 8 is connected with the catheter,
and the water is discharged by opening the discharge pipe 10, which renders it possible to draw the gasin the stomach up into the closed. vessel 7. In all the above-mentioned methods, atmospheric pressure is to be computed by referring to the air gage B.
The second operation: To introduce air or some other gas into the stomach, the joint pipe 8 ssconnected with the gastric catheter after filling the closed vessels with air, the discharge pipe 9 is connected with the communicating pipe 13, and the liquid in the vessel2 is run down while closing the bent pipe:5 andthe cocks 10 and 11, and as a result the air in the closed vessels 6 and 7 is introduced into the stomach, the pressure he in exactly told by the air gage B.
;%he third operation: To wash or cleanse the stomach, the communicating pipe 13 is connected with the gastric catheter, and the cocksii, 1 1 and 1-3 are opened, and the logical liquid the vessel 2runs out to the elevating vessel 12., 'When the elevating vessel is lifted higher than'the position of the pa 'tient"s body, the liquid contained in the elevating vessel flows outinto the stomach, the liquid running out of the stomach again whenthe vessel is'lowered below the said body. Lastly, tocompletely remove the remaining liquid in the. stomaclnthe same and minutely besides making it practicable to examine stomach conditions without the least harm to the patient, which features entitle the apparatus to be called as a new and useful invention by way of examination and treatment of stomach diseases.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a hydraulic gastric examining apparatus comprising a stand provided with superposed steps, a closed and an open vessel supported on the top step for receiving water and a wash lotion respectively, a discharge pipe and control valve therefor connected to each of said vessels, a pair of closed connected vessels supported on the lower step and connnunicating with the up per vessels whereby low pressure 1s produced 1n the connected vessels when the water 1s dlscharged from the upper closed vessel reducing the atmospheric pressure therem and a closed plpe having a gastric catheter communicating with one of said lower closed vessels for removing the gastric juice from the stomach of the patient as the water is discharged from the upper closed vessel.
2. In a hydraulic gastric examining apparatus comprising a stand provided with superposed steps, a closed and an open vessel supported on the top step for receiving water and a wash lotion respectively, a discharge pipe and control valve therefor connected to each of said vessels, a pair of closed, graduated, connected vessels supported on the lower step and communicating with the upper vessels whereby lowpressul'e is produced in the connected vessels when the water is discharged from the upper closed vessel reducing the atmospheric pressure therein, air gages interposed between the upper and closed vessels for determining the atmospheric pressure in said vessels during the discharge of the water, a joint pipe having a gastric catheter communicating with one of said lower closed vessels for removing gastric juice from the stomach of the patient by reducing the atmospheric pressure in said upper closed vessel.
