To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Acme E. Wrrrm, a citizen of the State of Bavaria and resident of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oggrating Mechanism for Signals and Other evices, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to operating mechanisms for signals and other devices, an object of the invention being to rovide a controlling valve by which a signa member or other device may be shifted in both directions by the suction created in the cylinders of a gas or explosive engine. A further obi'ect of the invention is to provide a controling valve which may be also utilized as an auxiliary air supply valve for the explosive engine.
To these and other ends, the invention consists of certain arts and combinations of parts, all of which will be hereinafter described, the novelfeaturesbeing pointed out in the appended claims. In the drawings:
Figure 1 shows diagrammatically two signals and their connections with the intake manifold of a gas engine, one of the signals being extended while the other is in nonsi aling position;

The signal or device to be operated in this instance comprises a head 5 at the outer end of the rod and a collapsible part consisting of a plurality of sections 6 hinged together at 7 and provided with slots 8 through which the rod 4 is passed. The inner section of the' collapsible signal is rigidly secured at 9 to piston 2 while the outer sectlon 6 1s lvotal y connected at 10 to the head 5. his signal is especially adapted for use in connection with a piston rod which must enter a cylinder as the si nal collapses during the retraction of t e rod. While the particular collapsible form herein shown is desirable, it is apparent that the invention is not limited to thisconstruction. r
For operating the signals it is preferred to connect the c linders with the manifold 11 of an interna expllosive engine of which only a fragment is s own. A pipe 12- leads from this manifold to a valve A and from this valve 4 pipes 13, 14, 15 and 16 lead to the opposite ends of the two cylinders 2 for the pur ose of creating a suction at any end of either of the c linders and admitting air to the opposite en so that the movement of the piston 3 in the cylinder may be offected.
This valve, in this instance com rises a. cone shaped casing 17 with which t e pipe in addition four ui-distantly arra cl ports 19 with which t e pipes 18, 14, 15 and 16 connect. 0 erating in the casing 17 is a cone shaped va ve 20 provided with a central port 21 having a lateral extension 22, the central ort communicating with the port 18 and t e lateral port being adapted to be brought into register with any one of the the purpose ofadmitting air to that end of the cylinder opposite that in which the suc tion is created in order to facilitate the movement of the piston. This cone valve may be held to its seat by a ring 24 fastened by screws 25 and a handle 26 on the valve member 20 may be employed for turning the same to its different positions.
A further feature of this invention is the utilization of this valve for supplying auxiliary air to the manifold so as to produce a proper mixture under certain conditions.
his is effected in this instance by providing the casing 17 with an opening 27 (see Fig. 7) and turning the valve member 20 until the port 22 therein is brought to register with the port 27. In this position, air will pass into the manifold by way of the port 27 and the pipe 12.
In the o eration of this invention when it is desire to project the left hand signal the valve member 20 is turned to connect the pipes 12 and 13 and admit air from the atmosphere to the pipe 14. The retraction of this si nal is effected b connecting the pi e 12 wit 1 the pi e 14 and the pipe 13 with t e atmosphere. ro'ection of the right hand signal is effected y connecting the pi e 12 with the pipe'lfi and the pipe 15 wit the atmosphere. Refraction o the right hand signal is effected by connecting the pipe 15 wlth the pipe 12 and the pipe 16 with the atmosphere. Auxiliary air is supplied to the engine by turning the valve member 20 to connect with the port 27.
From the foregoing it will be seen that there has been rovided an operatin mechanism for signal; or other devices w ich employs a cylinder with a piston o crating therein connected to the signal or evice to be operated. This cylinder is adapted to be connected at either end with the intake of a gas engine by a valve, one end of the c 'linder being 0 en to the atmosphere while the opposite en is connected with the intake manifold. This valve in addition to controllin the admission of air and the suction to sit er end of the cylinder also provides for an auxiliary air supply to the engme.
What I claim as mly invention and desire to secure by Letters atent is:
1. In combination with a gas engine, a cylinder, a' piston operating in the cylinder a device to be 0 erated connected with said piston, a pipe aving connection with the intake of t e gas engine, two pipes connected with the opposite ends of the c linder, and
a valve arranged to connect either of the last mentione pipes with the first named pipe and the ot er of said pipes with the atmos here.
2. n combination with a gas engine, two cylinders and devices to be operated connected with said pistons, pistons operating in the cylinders, a pipe having connection with the intake manifold of the gas engine, four pipes, two connecting with the op 0- site ends of each cylinder, and a valve or connecting the first mentioned iping with any one of said four pipes and connecting the .pipe of the same cylinder with the atmosphere without effecting the operation of the piston in the other e linder.
3. In combination wit a gas engine, a cylinder a device to be operated connected with said piston, a piston operating in the cyllnder, a piping connecting with the intake of the gas engine, and a valve for connecting said piping with the cylinder, said valve being movable to a position to admit air to the piping leading to the intake manifold for the purpose of supplying auxiliary air to the gas engine.
