Description
UNETED STATES BATENT OFFICE.
.rosnrn RAOUL MONTIETIT AND JAMES scOTT ADAMSON, or OTTAWA, ONTARIO,
- CANADA.
COMPOSITION OF MATTER DESIGNED FOR USE ON SHOES AND BOOTS AND ON LEATHER ARTICLES GENERALLY.
No Drawing.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, JOSEPH RAOUL MONTPETIT and JAMEs SCOTT AnAMsoN, subjects of the King of Great Britain, residents of the city of Ottawa, Province of Ontario, Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Composition of Matter Designed for .Use on Shoes and Boots and on Leather Articles Generally, of which the following is a specificati n.
' This invention relates to the composition of matter designed for use on shoes and boots and on leather articles generally, and the objects of the. invention are to increase the lifetime of the leather by imparting thereto greater wearing qualities, to main-v tain the leather in a proper resilient and elastic state, so that it will yield without fear of cracking or breaking when in use.
Further objects will be made clear as the specification proceeds.
The invention consists essentially of the composition of matter particularly described in the following specification.
lVe have found that a certain composition of matter when used on the soles and heelsof boots imparts greater wearing life thereto and the leather remains resilient and will yield when walking without any liability of cracking or breaking taking place.
The composition which we have found to give good results in practice consists of the following four groups of ingredients which are primarily mixed separately and then subsequently mixed in predetermined proportions together to form the complete composition.
The composition for the purpose specified comprising a varnish having the following ingredients; in the substantial proportions stated.
Copal gum 96 parts. Colophony gum 11 parts. Linseed oil 200 parts. Turpentine 320 parts.
A cellulose solution comprising the following ingredients in the proportions suband a rubber solution comprising the in- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 13, 1921 Application filed October 4, 1920. Serial No. 414,656.
gredients in the substantial proportions stated.
The ingredients in the first group are mixed together and form a liquid solution which is a form of varnish. This mixture of the ingredients is made by boiling. The 6!) ingredients of the third group are mixed together forming a solution of rubber also made in the cold state.
The second group; consists of a solution of cellulose ester-which is made in a cold state.
These solutions comp ise three groups which are now mixed in predetermined proportions that is to say, 240 parts of group 1 are mixed with 39 parts of group 3. 24:0 parts of group 1 are then mixed with 9 parts of group 2 and these two mixtures are then intimately mixed together to form a final solution which may be applied to the sole of a shoe or to the heel thereof, or in 30 fact to any wearing surface of leather.
The first group of ingredients will give body to the leather. The third group will give resiliency, the second group will also give hardness and the mixture will temper the leather, preserving the elasticity of the same and preventing cracking and breaking of the same when subjected to any flexing forces.
We have found that by applying this composition to leather that the lifetime and wearing qualities are greatly increased, and the oods rendered waterproof.
This composition can be applied to belting or to bags and besides increasing the wearing qualities gives a good finish.
We have found in experimenting that between 2 per cent. to 30 per cent. of rubber and not more than 12 per cent. of cellulose in the final mixture above described will give good results.
As many changes could be made in the above composition and many widely difi'erent embodiments of our invention within the scope of the claims constructed without departing from the spirit or scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the accompanying specification shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense. 1 l. 0
What We claim as our invention is:
1. A composition for the preservation of leather comprising a varnish, a cellulose ester solution and arubber solution.
2. A composition for the preservation of leather comprising a mixture of varnish, a cellulose ester solution and a rubber solution, the mixture containing not more than 12 per cent. of cellulose ester. I i
3. A composition for the preservation of leather comprising a mixture of varnish, a cellulose ester solution and a rubber solution, the mixture containing not less than 2 per cent. of rubber and not more than per cent.
4. A composition for the preservation of leather, comprising copal gum, colophony gum dissolved in a suitable solvent, rubber dissolved in a. liquid solvent, and pyroxlin dissolved in a suitable solvent, as and for the purpose specified.
5. A composition for the preservation of leather ,eonsisting of copal gum, colophony assess? gum linseed-oil, turpentine, camphor gum,
pyroxylin, acetone, para rubber, benzol and zenzin.
6. A composition for the purpose specified comprising a varnish havin a gum, linseed oil, and turpentine, a cellu ose ester solution having camphor gum, pyroxylin and a solvent, and a rubber solution having rubber, benzol and benzin.
7. A composition for the purpose specified comprising a varnish having copal gum 96 parts, colophony gum 11 parts, linseed oil 200 parts, turpentine 320 parts; camphor gum 4 parts, pyroxylin 9 parts, acetone 32 parts; para rubber 3 parts, benzol 16 parts and benzin 6 parts.
In Witness whereof We have hereunto set our hands in the presence of two witnesses.
