Application filed May 27,
To @ZZ whom t may con-cern.'
Be it known that l, FRANKLIN R. CHAND- Lnn, a citizen of United States, residing at St. Joseph, in the county oi Buchanan, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Glaziers Hammers; and I do hereby declare theiollowing to be a iull, clear, and exact description ot the. invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. Y
This invention relates to glaziers hammers and it has for its object to provide as an article of -manufacture a hammer that will eifectually withstand the strains to which it is subjected in use and will at the same time be sufficiently economical of manufacture, to insure its commercial success.
It is a further object ot the invention to provide a hammer of this particular type, lxaving a plurality of flat side faces at each end or' its head that may be shifted to interchangeably lie flat against a pane or' glass to facilitate driving of the glass retaining points in whatever angle to the glass the hammer handle ma.;v be held and in which furthermore the driving may be accomplished with either end of the head, without shifting the hammer from the glass.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a view showing the complete hammer in side elevation.
Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal Section through the handle on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1, to include the middle portion of the head at one end of the handle and the chisel blade at the other end or' the handle.y
Referring to the drawings, the present hammer includes a head. the end portions of which have the form of equilateral triangular prisms 5 and G respectively that are in axial alinement while the intermediate portion '7 o't the head is cylindrical. The end faces 8 and 9 ot' the head are fiat and at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the head.
A handle 10 is provided and is formed with a slot 11 extending longitudinally through 'one end portion of the handle and in this slot is disposed the endportions 12 of a metal strap, the intermediate portion of which is bent to fit snugly around the cylindrical intermediate portion 7 of the hammer head. but with sufficient looseness to permit ot' rotation of this portion of the hammer head. The said intermediate por- Specficationvof Letters Patent.

tion 13 of the metal shown and its edges the shoulders 14 that bound thecylindrical portion of the hammer head, so that longitudinal movement of the hammer head with respect to the strap, is prevented. Rivets 15 are engaged through the handle and the overlapped end portions of the strap that are within the slot 11. Y
The butt. end of the handle 10 is also slotted as shown at 164 to receive a chisel blade 17 that projects at one end from the slot, the blade being held in place by means of rivets 18. Y
:In use, the hammer is disposed with a pair o its which time the pivotal connectionv of the handle with the head will permit t 1e handle to be swung toward and glass during manipulation of the hammer, these faces or' the head being thus readily held Vat all times snugly against the glass. Furthermore, by reason of the ypivotal connection of the head with the hammer, the head quickly adjusts itself to bring a pair of faces lagainst theA glass in whatever posistrap, is cylindrical as tionthe head may have with respect to the,v
glass when it initially contacts it.
The chisel blade at the butt end of the handle may of course be used for clenching or for whatever other purpose it may serve.
That is claimed is:
1. A glaziers hammer comprising a head, a metal strap enga-ged about the head and in which the head is rotatable and a handle in which the strap is held, the-head having a plurality of flat side axis of rotation. Y
2. -A gla.zie1"shammer comprising a head having a plurality of flat, glass contacting side faces at each end and an intermediate faces parallel with its are inclose relation toV prism faces of opposite end portions of. head Hat against a pane of. glass, atv
away vfrom the cylindricalportion and a handle with which the cylindrical portion is rotatably connected. l
3. A glaziers hammer comprising a head having' a plurality of glass contactingD side faces and an` intervening Vcylindrical p0rwhich the cylindrical portion is rotatably connected.
4.- A glaziers hammer comprising ahead having a flat side face `to rest against a pane of glass and havingwan integral extension, and a handle with which the 'extension is. connected for rotation on an axis with said side face.
