Description

J. ONEIL.
TRAP JAW.
APPLICATION FILED FEB.8.192I.

ATTORNEY tartan starts PATENT OHHQE.
JEREMIAH ONEIL, OF SHERRILL, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO ONEIDA COMMUNITY, LIMITED, 0F ONEIDA, NE'vV YORK, A CORPORATION OF NEV] YORK.
TRAP-JAW.
Application filed February 8, 1921.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JEREMIAH ONE'IL, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Sherrill, county of Oneida, and State of New York, have made a new and useful Invention Relating to Trap-Jaws, of which the following is a specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, which forms part of the same.
This invention relates especially to steel trap jaws for animal traps in which the rod or other original stock is rolled or otherwise formed with a relatively flat edge rib, adjacent the gripping face and with a concavely beveled reduced back portion which gives relatively greater strength and stifiness with the same weight of metal and also considerably promotes the desired bending action of the material in forming'the jaws. This edge rib which may advantageously be of about the same width as the thickness of the jaw strip at the gripping face may advantageously be bent or carried around to form the bearing pintles or lugs of the jaws, which may thus be formed of more symmetrical shape, so that when tumbled or otherwise finished more effective bearings are thus produced.
The accompanying drawings show in a somewhat diagrammatic way an illustrative embodiment of this invention.
Figure 1 is a plan view of an illustrative jaw or steel animal trap equipped with these jaws.
Fig. 2 is a cross section of the jaw strip attached to a stock rod from which it has been rolled.
Fig. 3 is a side view of one of the trap jaws; and
Fig. 4 is an enlarged end view thereof.
The round or other original jaw stock or rod such as 9, may be advantageously rolled or otherwise formed into the jaw strip or stock 10, having a relatively flat edge rib 2 adjacent the gripping face of the jaws; while the back portion of the jaw strip is preferably formed with a concavely beveled shape in cross-section, so that this back portion, which may be less than a third of the thickness of the gripping face if de sired, is relatively flat adjacent its back edge as is shown in Fig. 2. This edge rib 2 thus forms a more decided angle with the adjacent portion of the conca-vely beveled back so as to give a better appearance when Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial NO. 443,343.
the jaws are assembled in the trap; and
what is still more important a full thickness portion of the jaw strip is thus formed adjacent the gripping face from which the bearing pintles or lugs may be produced.
This rolled jaw strip may of course be stamped or cut out into the desired lengths for the individual trap jaws and simultaneously be given the desired tapering contour at its reduced or back edge portion and then the separate jaws may be bent in any desired way to form' the complete jaws such as 14 shown in Figs. 1, 3 and 4. The width of the jaws of course varies at different points from the widest part 16 toward the bearing pintle or lug 11 with which the bow 15 of the trap spring 5 cooperates. The taper from this widest part 16 toward the free end or hearing pintle 8 is of course more gradual, so that when viewed from the top the jaws 14: have a general tapering form as shown in Fig. 1. The jaw pintles pass through suitable members or ends such as et at each end of the trap frame to which the crossarm 7 may be attached so as to carry the pan 6 and latch or detent 8 in any desired way. As is shown in greater detail in Fig. 4c the bearing pintles or lugs such as 3 may have rounded edges or corners 12, so as to form approximately cylindrical ends to engage the bearing holes in the frame. This edge rib 2 on the jaws 14 thus provides a full thickness bearing portion from which to form the bearing pintles or lugs and this thicker rib edge may be bent laterally as desired, so as to locate the bearing pintle 3 on the free end of the trap jaw somewhat away from the plane of the gripping jaw face in some cases.
This invention has been described in connection with a number of illustrative embodiments, forms, parts, proportions, sizes, materials, and methods of connection, op eration and use to the details of which disclosure the inventio is not of course to be limited since what is claimed as new and what is desired to be secured by Letters Patent is set forthin the appended claims.
Claims: I
1. The rolled steel trap jaw formed adjacent the gripping face of the jaw with a relatively flat edge rib having substantially the same width as the thickness of said gripping face and formed with a concavely beveled reduced thickness back portion extending away from said gripping face beyond said edge rib to stiffen and strengthen said gripping face, said edge rib portion being laterally bent to form the bearing pintles or lugs on the jaw.
2. The rolled steel trap jaw formed adjacent the gripping face of the jaw with a relatively flat edge rib having substantially the same width as the thickness of said gripping face and formed with a concavely beveled reduced thickness back portion extending away from said gripping face beyond said edge rib to stiffen and strengthen said gripping face, said edge rib portion being shaped to form the bearing pintles or lugs on the jaw.
3. The rolled steel trap aw formed with a relatively narrow flat edge rib adjacent the gripping face of the jaw and formed with a beveled back portion extending away from said gripping face beyond said edge rib to stiffen and strengthen said gripping face said edge rib portion forming the bearing pintles or lugs on the jaw.
4:. The steel trap jaw formed with a relatively narrow edge rib adjacent the gripping face of the jaw and formed with a concavely beveled back portion extending away from said gripping face beyond said edge rib to stiffen and strengthen said gripping face.
