AUTOM'OBILE-SIGNAL.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that l, Gnonen E. DAVIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hamburg, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Automobile-Signals, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a directional signal for automobiles and other vehicles the principal object of the invention being to provide a device which will indicate when the vehicle is to change its course, the signal being so formed that it may be used as a parking lamp at night.

Another object of the invention is to provide a motor for moving the signal arm into and out of operative position and a switch located at a point adjacent the drivers seat for controlling the current to said motor.

This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.

In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the sev eral views, and in which Figure 1 is a front view of the invention.

Fig. 3 is a sectional view showing the signal arm in operative position.

In these views lindicates a case which is connected to a bracket 2, said bracket being arranged to be clamped to the windshield frame of the automobile, though it will be understood that the device may be secured to other parts of the vehicle. One side of the device is provided with a hinged door 3, the hinge l of which is connected with the lower end of the door. This door is provided with a plate 5 which extends at right angles to the door and carries a signal lamp 6. The plate also carries a reflector 7 for the lamp and both the reflector and plate are provided with openings at the rear of the lamp through which the rays of li ht opening in the plate being covered by a transparent plate 8 which is preferably colored red. will be projected forwardly while a red light can be seen from the rear so that in this position of the door the device will act as a parking lamp, as well as a signal for indicating that the vehicle is to change its course of travel.

The means for opening and closing the door consists of a small electric motor 12 which is geared to a wheel 13 and this wheel is connected with the plate 5 by thelink 14.

his motor is controlled by the reversing switch 15 which is located in convenient reach of the driver.

It will be understood that when the driver wishes to make a turn he operates the switch to cause the motor to turn in one direction to open the door to display the signal. Wheel 13 will make a partial revolution and move link 1% to swing the door open. This link 1-1 striking the supporting frame of the motor will act as a stop to prevent fun ther rotation of the wheel 18 and thus hold the door in'open position. After he makes the turn the switch is turned in the other direction so as to reverse the motor to close the door. The switch is then turned to neutral position.

I also provide an alarm 9 which is located in the motor circuit so that when the motor is moving the door to open position the alarm will be sounded.

I prefer to form an opening in the front of the case which will be in alinement with the lamp when the door is closed and to place a lens carrying member 16 in front of said opening and I may also place a mirror 17 on the rear said case thus the device can be used as a small head lamp and the mirror will give the driver a view of the road in his rear.

It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.

I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
