WILLIAM H. MATTEOLI, OF CONNERSVILLE, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR 'IO INDIANA LAMP COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF INDIANA.
MEANS FOR SECURING LAMP-LENS CLOSURES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 6, 1921.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM M. MAT- TEOLI, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Connersville, county of Fayette, and State of Indiana, have invented a certain new and useful Means for Securing Lamp-Lens Closures; and I do hereby de clare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which like numerals refer to like parts.
This invention relates to a means for securing the rim closure of a lamp upon the casing thereof, and more particularly to that typeof lamp used for headlights on vehicles and the like wherein a demountable lens closure is desirable.
The main feature of this invention resides in the construction of a locking means, whereby a rim closure may be laced upon the lamp casing and turned slig tly thereon so as to be engaged in looking position, as will be hereinafter more fully and specifically described.
In the drawings, which are made a part of this application. Figure 1 is a side elevation of a lamp casing with a portion of the closure removed. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of a portion of the lamp casing. Fig. 3 is a cross section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
In the drawings there is shown a lamp casing 10 having an outwardly extending peripheral flange portion 11 with a bead 12 between said flange portion and lamp casing, and a radially extending flange 13 about the outer edge of and integral with the flange portion 11. The rim closure 14, in which is mounted a lens 15, is adapted to be mounted over the flange 13 and the forward portion 11 so as to engage on the bead 12. The reflector 16 is mounted within the casing and held in position between the lens 15 and downwardly pro'ecting ears 17, which are stamped out of t e metal and turned downwardly therefrom.
Extending radially inwardly from the inner periphery of the rim closure 14 there are a plurality of pins 18 spaced apart. At intervals around the periphery of the flange 13 portions thereof are cut and turned inwardly to form the diagonally disposed guide members 19 and leaving an opening through which the pins 18 may ass when the rim closure is mounted in posltion. The pins 18 being permitted to pass through said opening will allow the closure to be completely mounted over the flanged portion 11, and then turn thereon so that said pins will come into engagement with a yielding spring member 20 having one end thereof secured in the flanged portion 13 in close proximity of said opening and the other end secured thereto at a distance away from said opening, said spring member being provided with a notched portion in which the ins 18 will fall as the closure is turned. he inward movement of the lens closure is positively stopped by the engagement of the lens 15 against the reflector and, therefore, as the closure is rotated, and the inwardly extending pins engage the springs, said springs yield and permit the pins to enter the notches therein, In this manner the pin and spring notch engagement positively retains the closure in looking position except when manually operated to overcome the spring tension and cause it to be released.
It will be noted from the foregoing that this construction will permit of a rim closure being placed in position upon the casing and by slmply rotating it around the periphery thereof, it will fall into position and lock itself without necessitating the locating of the openings, and for unlocking and removing it it need only be rotated in the opposite direction so that it will of its own accord be disengaged and in position to be readily removed.
The invention claimed is:
1. A lamp construction including a lamp casing having an outwardly projecting peripheral flange, a radially extending flange mounted adjacent the outer edge thereof, diagonally extending guide members formed on said flange and bending rear-wardly from an opening formed therein, a plurality of springs secured to said casing adjacent the openings formed in said flange, a lens closure adapted to be mounted over said flange portion, and a plurality of spring engaging members on said lens closure arranged to pass through said openings and be guided by said members into locking engagement with said springs as the closure is rotated upon the casing in one direction, and be guided by said members out through said openings as the closure is rotated in the other direction.
2. In a lamp construction including a lamp casing having an outwardly projecting peripheral flange, a radially extending flange integral with said flange portion, diagonally extending members formed from portions of said radial flange bending rearwardly therefrom and providing openings therein, a plurality of springs secured to said casing adjacent the openings formed in said flange and having notches therein, a lens closure adapted to be mounted over said flange portion, and a plurality of pins on 10 said lens closure adapted to pass through the openings and be guided by said members into engagement with said springs as the closure is rotated upon the casing.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto af- 15 fixed my signature.
WILLIAM M. MATTEOLI.
