This invention relates to disk wheels, particularly to that kind thereof in which a single disk forms the main part of the wheel.
One of the objects of this invention is to provide a disk wheel of the single plate disk type, having the main part of the wheel including a rim support and a. section of the rim of one piece of sheet metalpreinforced by a smaller disk having peripheral contact with the larger disk midway of the center and rim of said larger disk, and diverging from the same toforrn. a reinforcing brace to the larger disk, while seated in a specially formed flange of the, hub in a manner to incorporate the seating features with the hub flange to obviate the necessity of an extra seating piece, such as is shown in my application of Serial Number 319,396, filed August 23, 1919.
A further object is to provide at the hub a plurality of spacing and flanged bolts which will give the-necessary torsional resistance to the parts connected with the hub, at the same time holding these parts in proper spaced relation.
A further object is to provide reinforcing pieces at the rim section where riveted to the rin )ortion havin these reinforcin ieces if) 7 2 C1 ribbed on their edges to stiffen the same.
A further object of this invention is to provide a. single disk wheel which is partly reinforced, and which is formed into a rim support and section of the rim having connected therewith an annularly recessed ring portion, in which a split ring is positioned to complete the rim for holding the tire thereon. i
lVith these and other objects my invention consists in certain construct-ion, one embodi- .ment of which is illustrated in the drawings,
is hereinafter described, and what I claim is set forth.

Figure 1 is a front elevation of a single disk wheel embodying my invention, partly broken away, illustrating the relation of the various members incorporated with the disk.

Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of a wheel similar to that shown in Figs. 1 and 2 in construction, but varying therefrom in the formation of the hub, which is adapted for front wheel purposes of an automobile.

In the figures, referring particularly to Figs. 1 and 2, which illustrate the driven or rear wheel, there is shown upon the shaft 1, a hub 2 secured rotatively thereon by the key 3. The hub 2 has a flange 4 near the pe riphery of which is formed an annular seat 5, having integral therewiththe brake flange 6.. The hub 2 has an annular shoulder 7, against which is positioned the reinforcing disk 8 which is bent into a cylindrical portion 9, which merges into a short flat portion 10, restingagainst the annular ridge 11 I of the flange l. The flat portion 10 merges 23, reinforcing the support.
Referring now, to the form of wheel shown in Figs. 3 and 1, the hub 2" is con structed to adapt it tov idly turn upon the shaft, and the parts of this wheel are similar to those shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and similarly numbered, with the exception that the rear flange (3 is much smaller than the flange 6, shown in Fig. 2, and is not used for braking purposes. Referring now to the particular construction of the bridging piece 23, as shown particularly in perspective in Fig. 9, there are stiffening ribs 23 stamped into the sheet metal at the side edges of the piece 23.
Referring now to Figs. 10, 11 and 12, the construction of the disks, the wheel portions next the hub,and the part of the rim is similar to that shown in Fig. 2, with the exception that the flanges of the rim are turned outward. The split ring 30 forming one of the flanges of the 'rim of the wheel, has an L-section. This ring with the remaining portion of the 'rim' and another ring into which it fits, is better shown in section in Fig. 12, wherein an inclined flange 31, is shown fitting into a groove 32, in a ring 33, which ring 33 is held by bolts '34 to the telly portion of the wheel. The split ring 30 has a flat portion'35, the outer surface of which the annular recess 32'having forms a continuation to the surface 36 of the rim portion which is integral with the disk 18. l The flat portion 35 0f the ring 30 has a beveled portion 37, lying against a corresponding beveled part of the other portion of the rim. The inclined flange 31, is conically converged away from the center of the wheel, and when in a position held by the inflated tire T, it occupies the outer part of the periphery 31 of the flange 31 in contact with the surface of the annular groove 32 while at the same time the hook portion 33 of the ring 33 is in contact with the flange 31 near the bend of the L-section of the split ring 30. It will be observed that there is a space back of the flange 31 in the annular groove 32 sufliciently large to permit of the split rin 30 being moved toward the center of the w eel after the tire has become deflated, so that the edge 31 of the flange 31 passes radially outward over the edge 33 of the ring 33 in removin the split ring 30. After the parts i are in place, as shown in Fig. 12 with the tire T under pressure of inflation, the flange 31 is in abutting relation with the ring 33 at the zone 31, preventing any outward movement of the split ring 30, while at the same time, on account of the conical formation of the flange 31, the edge 33 of the ring 33 forms a positive locking engagement with thesplit ring 30, against any radially outward movement of the ring 30, from the ring 33. The purpose of the beveled portion 37 of the ring 30 is to provide a shouldered fit of the parts when in place, and at the same time permit of the easy movement of the ring 30 toward the place of the tire, while removing the same.
Considering the spacing bolts 26, the flanges 28 thereof being comparatively large in diameter, present substantial spacing surfaces between the hub portion parts of the wheel at the same time resist any turning out of their right angle position to the hub plate,
on account of the breadth of the flanges 28.

In a sheet metal disk wheel havin a hub and a hub flange, said hub flange having an annular recess near its periphery forming a Circumferential seat, an auxiliary disk in shouldered engagement with said seat, a main disk spaced from said auxiliary disk at the contact of the latter with said seat and in fixed contact with said auxiliary disk near the periphery of said auxiliary disk, said main disk having a hollow zone near its periphery concave on the face of the wheeh andhaving a convex zone on the face of said wheel adjoining the hub section thereof, and means for holding the parts of the wheel 4. In a sheet metal disk w heel for vehicles, a hub, a main disk fixed to said hub forming the body of the wheel, a flange on said hub, an annular seat near the periphery of said flange, a sheet metal auxiliary bracing disk adapted to fit into said seat, and having a peripheral bearing contact with said main disk, and means for holding the parts of the wheel together.
5. In a disk wheel, the combination of a hub, a hub flange, an auxiliary disk bearing against said flange adjacent its periphery, a plurality of spacers between said flange and said disk and means for securing said spacers thereto.
6. In a disk wheel, the combination of a hub, a hub flange, a shoulder on said hub, a main disk and an auxiliary disk bearing against said shoulder and said flange adjacent its periphery.
