ROW-MARKER.
Application filed June 23,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAcoB S. Coons, a citizen of the United States, residing at Taylorsville, in the county of Alexander and State of North Carolina, have invented cer tain new and useful Improvements in Row-v and. I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to row markers and it consists in the novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
An object of the invention isto provide a marker device adapted to be applied to the beam of a plow and which may be conveniently used for laying off or markinga row adjacent to that row along which the plowis opening a furrow.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the character stated which may be easily and'quickly shifted so that the marking element may be disposed at either side of the beam of the plow thus making it possible to operate the plow back and forth across. the field and to lay off the rows successively from one side of the field toward the opposite side thereof.
With these objects in view-the .marker comprises a post pivotally mouritedupon the plow beam, the said post being provided with a bracket located at a point between its ends. An arm is pivotally connected with the post and the intermediate portion thereof is received in the bracket. The arm carries at its outer end the marking element which is preferably in the form of a disk. A lever is fulcrumed atthe upper end of the post and a. link mechanism operatively connects the working end of the lever with the arm at a point between the ends thereof. A chain section is connected at one end with the intermediate portion of the beam and at its other end with the outer portion of the arm and serves to limit the swinging movement of the arm with relation to the beam. The parts are so arranged that when the rear end of the lever is depressed the outer end of the arm is raised so that the marking element is lifted above the upper edge of the plow beam. The post may then be turned whereby the marking element is moved from one side of the beam to a position at the opposite side thereof and may be Specification of Letters Patent.

lowered into contact with the surface of the ground.
Inthe accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a plow with the row marker appliedthereto, 2 is a topplan view of the same,
- Fig. 3 is a view showing the marker principally in'front elevation but partlybroken away and in connection with the plow shown in section.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary front view of the worker reversed relative to Fig. .3 and in COIIlGCtlOn with the plow shown in section, an J Fig. 5 is a detail elevation of a modified form of flexible connecting means between the plow beam and'marker.
The plow beam 1 is provided with a socket or opening 2 disposed vertically therein and located at a point behind the standard 3. The marking device comprises a post A provided at its lower end with a spindle portion. 5 which is journaled in the socket or opening 2. The post 4 is supported in a vertical position upon the beam 1. A bracket 6 is mounted at the intermediate portion of the post land has a loop 7 at one side thereof. An arm 8 is pivoted at its rear end to the post 4 at a point between the ends thereof and the saidarm is provided at its free end with a longitudinally disposed socket 9. A set screw 9 passes through the side of the arm 8 and its inner end enters the socket 9. A lever 10 is fulcrumed near the upper end of the post 4 and a clip 11 is fixed to the intermediate portion of the arm 8. A link 12 is pivotally connected at one end with the clip 11 and pivotally connected at its other end with the working end of the lever 10. A clip 13 is attached to the intermediate portion of the arm 8 and a chain 14 is connected at one end" with the clip 13. The other end of the chain 1 1- is connected with an eye device 15 which is attached to the intermediate portion of the beam 1. A bar 16 is provided at its upper end with a spindle portion 17 which is inserted in the socket 9 of the arm 8. The inner end of the set screw 9 bears against the side of the spindle portion 17 and holds the same at an adjusted position in the socket 9. The bar 16 is provided at its lower end with an angularly disposed spindle 18 upon which is journaled a disk 19.
It is obvious that by loosening the screw by the link 12 is moved 9 the spindle portion 17 may be adjusted longitudinally in the socket 9 whereby the bar 16 may be positioned toward or away from the adjacent end of the arm 8. Thus, means are provided for increasing or diminishing the distance between the post 4L and the disk 19.
hen the device is in operation, the arm 8 is disposed at one side of the beam 1 and the disk 19 is in contact with the surface of the ground. As the plow moves along the ground, the disk 19 makes a mark in the ground at the s1le of the path along which the plow is moving.
Vhen it is desired to shift. the disk 19 from one side of the beam 1 to the other, the power end of the lever 10 is depressed whereupwardly and the free end of the arm 8 is swung in an upward direction. This lifts the bar 16 so that the lower edge of the disk 19 is carried to a point above the upper edge of the beam 1. The post a is then swung so that the disk 14; is carried from beyond one side of the beam 1 to a point beyond the opposite side thereof and then the power end of the lever 10 is released whereby the disk 19 will de-' scend by gravity and come in contact with the surface of the ground. it will be seen that means are provided for shifting the disk from one side of the plow beam to the other and means are provided for causing the disk tooperate in the soil at various distances from the path along which the plow is moving over the ground.
By lengthening or shortening the chain section 14-. which connects the eye with the intermediate portion of the arm 1, the disk 19 may relation to the line of draft or movement of the plow. Consequently the disk may be Consequently means may be positioned at a desired angle with positioned in a plane which is parallel with the line of movement of the plow or the disk may be positioned in a plane which is disposed at an acute angle with relation to the line of draft of the plow.
In Fig. 5 of the drawings are shown pivotally connected bars l k which if desired may be used in lieu of the chain 14, and to permit the bars 14; to be secured to the hand and to the arm 8 they are provided with openings 14".
Having thus described the invention what is claimed is:
1. In combination with a supporting beam, a post thereon, marking means suspended from the post, a lever on the post operable to raise said means above the beam, and said post being turnable on a substantially vertical axis so that the marking means may be moved across the beam and disposed on either side thereof by swinging the lever laterally while in a raised position.
2. In combination with a supporting beam, a post thereon, an arm pivoted on the post for vertical movement, a bracket on the post in which said arm is guided, a lever pivoted to the postfor vertical movement, flexible means connecting the lever and arm, marking means extending from the arm, a stud on the post mounted by said beams, and said post being turnable so that the marking be moved across the beam and disposed on either side thereof by swinging the lever laterally while in a raised position.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JACOB s Coons.
