Description

H. c. STOLLE. ELEVATOR AND HOLDER FOR RMLWAY SLEEPERS 0R TIES.
Patented Aug. 30, 1921.
APPLICATION FILED JULY 30, I920.
UNITED STATES PATENT OF FICE HERMAN o. STOLLE, or DAVENPORT, IOWA,
ELEVATOR AND HOLDER FOR.RAILWAY SLEEPERS on TIES.
1,389,393. Application filed July so,
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HERMAN C. STOLLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Davenport, in the county of Scott and State of Iowa, have invented new and useful Improvements in Elevators and Holders for Railway Sleepers or Ties, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention has for its object to provide an efficient, labor saving sleeper or tie elevator and holder for use incident to the spiking of a railway rail to a sleeper or tie. I Y 1 To the attainment of the foregoing the invention: consists in the improvement as hereinafter described and definitelyclaimed.
In the accompanying drawings, hereby made a part hereof Figure l is a view illustrating my novel elevator and holder as properly arranged relative to a sleeper or tie and a rail to be spiked to the sleeper or tie.
Figs. 2 and 3 are views making clear the construction of the holder per 86.
Similar numerals of reference designate,
corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings.
The sleeper or tiel and the rail 2 are of the ordinary well known constructions or of any other constructions in connection with which my novel elevator and holder can be successfully operated.
Among other elements the elevator and holder includes a main frameof metal. The said main frame has side bars 3 and spaced cross bars 4 and 5 interposed between and fixed with respect to the side bars 3. At their forward ends the side bars 3 are provided with seats 6, shaped by preference as illustratedin order to receive and hold the base of a rail.
In addition to the main frame described, the elevator and holder comprises a drum shaft 7, journaled in the bars 4 and 5 and having a crank 8 at its rear or outer end, a cable 9, preferably of chain connected to and adapted to be wound on the drum shaft 7 and having a hook 10 whereby it may be readily looped and fastened about a sleeper or tie as shown, a ratchet wheel 11 fixed on the outer portion of the drum shaft 7, and
a dog or pawl 12 pivoted to the outer cross bar f and arranged to gravitationally cooperate with the ratchet wheel 11. V
In the practical use of my novel elevator and holder the side bars of the main frame the spikes necessary sleeper or tie.
through the medium of the means shown and I r the medium of no delicate 1920.. Serial No. 399,980.
are engaged With a rail as illustrated, and the cable 9 is connected to the sleeper or, tie as shown. After the elevator and holder is applied as stated it will be observedthat by turning the drum shaft enabled toiraise the sleeper or tie and to drive It will also be manifest that described the elevator and holder is enabled to raise the sleeper or tie with the expenditure of little effort. It will further be appreciated that my novel tie elevator and holder is adapted to be left in attached relation to a rail while atrain is passing without liability of being jarred loose, and that through my elevator and holder a tie may be held against the rail until the rail is spiked to the tie. My novel elevator and holder is also adapted to be used in close proximity to a building'or wall, and is sus- 7 a single operator is Specification of Letters Patent. Patentd ifillg. 30, 1321.
to aflix the rail to the ceptible of being readily attached and de-- tached. I
The weight of the elevator and holder in practice is about the same as that of a crow bar, and the elevator'and holder embodies parts such as are likely to get out of order after a short period of use.
-'Havi11g described my invention, what I claim and cm, is 1. A
prising a main frame having a portion a railway tie, and also having a portion desire to secureby Letters-Patrailway tie elevator and bolder comshaped to receive and bearing against the 1 bottom and one side of a rail base and against the opposite side of the rail web,
and means carried by the elevated portion of said frame and adapted to be connected to a tie whereby the tie maybe raised and secured in raised position.
2. A railway tie elevator and holder comprising a main frame having a portion adapted to rest a considerable distance above a railway tie, and also having a portion shaped to receive and bearing against the bottom and one side of a rail base and against the opposite side of the rail web, a cable adapted to be connected with a tie, a drum ournaled in the elevated portion of the main frame and adapted to be manually turning, said cable being connected to and adapted to be wound on said drum, and means to prevent retrograde rotation of the drum.
Arailway tie elevator and holder comprising a main frame having side bars the forward portions of which are shaped to receive and bear against the bottom and one side of a rail base and against the opposite side oi a rail Web and the rear portions of vhich are elevated, bars connecting the said side bars, a drum shaft journaled in said connecting bars and pr0v1ded wlth a crank,
a ratchet Wheel on the drum shaft, a dog or pawl on the outer cross bar and arranged to gravitationally cooperate with the ratchet Wheel, and a cable connected to and adapted to be Wound on the drum shaft, and also adapted to be connected to a tie.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
HERMAN o. STOLLE.
